What is Jiraishin about?

Small desription: "Kyoya Ida is a hard-nosed detective from the Shinjuku Police precinct. He is known in the force as an unreasonable type who would use lethal force to solve cases, making him unpopular with the enlisted and high-ranking officers in the National Police Agency."

So it's mostly him investigating and dealing with criminal activity. Main character, art and its atmosphere are the main draw of the series.

A few more pics from it:

The World is Mine, drawn and written by Hideki Arai

Mon-chan and Toshi are terrorists. They travel through japan, making fire extinguisher bombs and laying them around. Mon-chan as no past, is not educated and he's a sort of an alpha man beast, eccentric, speaking few but shouting when needs to be heard, making his interactions troublesome with everybody around him. Toshi is a fanatical student, angry at the entire world, making bombs to kill as many people

Meanwhile, in Hokkaido, a giant bear causes mass destruction in the mountains and keep getting closer to big cities. Mon-chan wants to compete with the giant bear to achieve more destruction and prove himself the greater strength but as their rampage go on, the two seems more and more connected... ?

The World is Mine is an INCREDIBLE read. Be warned : it's also very violent (primal sex, rape, murder, torture and graphic scene of mutilated corpse after stabbing) and shouldn't handed to anybody. Beyond the ultra violence, the manga has incredibly developed and deep characters is a very hard shake up on the japanese establishment and society. It goes hard even on american - japan relatonship in the later volume and the last book is just plain crazy as in it's a must read and probably one of the most shocking and long lasting effect a manga had on me.

The pacing and the drawing are also masterful. The lines can get very intense when the emotions are full and the saturation of the drawing can become painting like, flamboyant, showing true forms to true monsters trapped inside human bodies and behaving in truly despicable ways.

In the end, The World is mine is a grand as the title suggest it : it's both an indecent spectacle, an unshackled adventure and a hard declaration, depressed on pessimism, an interpretation of essential questions about humanity and the meaning of living.

Give it a try

Jiraishin is pretty "meh" to be honest. I'm surprised at how much I actually disliked it.

Pretty much the GOAT

There are many better pages though. This, in context, is certainly one of the best:

Holyland is pretty great but it's a shame a lot of pages are harder to find. The characters are more important than the fights (which are pretty good), so I would go with such a page instead:

No one in our culture actually says stuff like "This man..." or "That man..." out loud ever

Is that really the only way to translate it?

there are a lot of terrific, best in class, action scenes in Takemitsu Zamurai, as a quick image search will show you, but those aren't the reason why this manga is so touching. No, that is due to the author's mastery of simplicity and charm, which allows him to give considerable humanity to characters with peripheral storytelling, thus keeping the book at a brisk pace. This here is a genuine attempt at crafting folklore. And a damn good one.

Is Kingdom better than the ravages of time?
If you're interested more in warfare and *yiqi(Brotherhood) then Kingdom is a better read. If you're looking for political intrigue and historical tellings of famous events then Ravages of time is a lot better. It's basically if you want to read shounen versus Seinin right now. Though I will say, they take part in different eras of China, so maybe you have a favorite era? One is the unification of China and the other is the three kingdoms era.

Dorohedoro : Let it Die, but stronger

Tekkon Kinkreet : it was a manga before beeing a top tier movie!

Ashman : the only good Gunnm (or Battle Angel Alita as you heaten americans call it) spinoff.

Grand Blue - This is supposed to be a manga about a university diving club, but ends up being 50% binge drinking, 49% male nudity and 1% scuba diving. This is easily the funniest manga I've read in years.

Bakuon - A manga about high school girls riding bikes, I find it quite funny. It was definitely written by someone who rides motorcycles.

denki gai no honya san - comedy about people who work in a manga shop

Shit ending but this is by far one of the most unrestrained craziness you'll see in a manga.
