I'm assuming they're working out the licensing contracts? I'm pretty sure they have to shell out money to actually get permission for those codecs to work on their machine.

It is one day work. All the paper to fill and money to exchange. So stupid to announce and not ready for very while. (I mean very while)

Why is MKV support such a big deal?
Popular anime pirate format.

MKV will follow-up to the Media Player launch this fall. It will ship well before the end of the year, but we wanted to call out for clarity it won't make launch. But don't worry, it will be there and I'm demoing it here in Cologne.

Sony's 2013 and 2014 TV models and media/blu-ray players do MKV.

Same for some of their blurayplayers, if im not mistaken.

But yeah, this is good stuff. I'm not planning on buying an X1, but I hope the competition takes note.. I would love for the PS4 to become a decent Plex-box :)

Nothing! I said nothing!
this is good news, but importantly I want to be able to push DLNA content directly to Xbox one via a controller - eg using my tablet to browse and then play on my TV. I can actually already do this direct to my Sony TV, but I think it is important considering the 'input one' nature of Xbox 1 so you can play things without having to specifically launch a separate app

You already can.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
It's the container that most pirated content is in.

Which, let's keep it real, is probably why so many want it, although I use apps like MakeMKV to digitalize my Blu-Rays. It's probably not really legal as well, but I paid for the disk and I am not sharing it, so I see legitimate benefit here as well.

Finally... wow at next gen multimedia features.
Now your turn Sony.

Also if you two could please speed up a little so I can have the same level of features I have on my PS3 and I had on my 360.

Thanks (some guy who give you money regularly)

does playto work with plex DLNA server? I didn't see my xbox pop up as a destination using my usual DLNA controllers on ipad. Will have another look.

Ideally that plex app will come and let me use plex on ipad for nice browsing, and then cast it to the XB1. I definitely need that tablet support though - can't browse lots of content directly on a TV anymore after getting used to the convenience of a tablet

edit: Boot to TV confirmed in that Major Nelson post - that is my personal megaton (and critical to my wife allowing the DVR to stay hooked through my XB1)

Well, MP4 (AVC / H.264 + AC-3 audio) is pretty popular, since that's the format that works on practically all Android and iOs deviced. PS3 as well, if I'm not mistaken.

Blackberry 10 supports MKV out of the box, and it's damn awesome.

Ah, piracy. Got it! Don't see this being a deal-breaker for the masses then, but it's nice if you don't like to pay for your media I guess.

MKV is not strictly for piracy.

I use MKV for my own DVD/BR rips so I can include subtitles and multi audio tracks. It's also future proof. Since MKV is just a container, I won't have to re-add my old movies into my XBMC library when I decide to rerip the movies in a higher bitrate or when a new superior codec comes along.

No other container/format is better at this than MKV.

Supported file types:

Thank overdrivex and Albert Penello for the tip. And rayisbeast for reminding me to include a source :p
Source

Incompatible if old.
When I came into this thread and saw the file types I was like MKV won't be on there who cares. So holy shit its there! Now Sony can u announce support so I can trade my ps3 in for a xbone!

I get that, but it's like saying that bittorrent isn't for piracy. There's bound to be some legitimate use, and it does what it does well, but people aren't getting excited about MKV support on xbone for ripping their blu-rays, they're doing so because they download anime/movies/other tv shows. Piracy's the reason that this is a big deal for people, I'm guessing.

MKV support changes everything. DLNA is always nice too.

Xbox one is turning into a very competent media device with this.

Also gif support is amazing.

Wow mkv!

Now get your asses on this Sony what the hell man. This machine is barebones as fuck.

can we at least wait until the damn software is out on XB before we pile on? This is end of year stuff, with USB (no MKV) trickling out first and then updates over the following months.

Yes Sony is slow but announcing things months in advance isn't the same as releasing it. Those media features aren't even in preview yet (although I guess the basic USB player will be in next month's update)

Damn Sony is getting murked in this media game. Hopefully the competition forces them to actually get moving on their software.

To be fair MS came to the party gloating how it's a media box abit more then gaming while Sony said it was about the games. MS is taking it to the next level with these updates. Sony has Netflix and Hulu as a media source. Damn shame really not even youtube or twitch app. I just want the simple stuff but MS pulled the mkv out the bag. I don't see this or mp3 on a PS4 anytime soon because of Sony Unlimited and the PS store. They want people to by music and rent moves from them.

What's up for debate, that most pirated content is in .mkv? That's not up for debate, that's a fact.

I get your point. But my point is that MKV is losing traction compared to MP4; so 'ignoring' MKV because of piracy doesnt make much sense. Just look at the Top 100 "HD Movies" on PirateBay; 90% of them are in MP4.

MS has exactly the same first party offerings with Xbox Video and Music (buy/rent TV&Movies, and unlimited subscription access to music)

Cool.

Will there be support for streaming movies from ordinary smb/Windows shares also?

Holycrap at MKV support! Now let's see if Sony beats them to the punch again like 3D Blu-rays.

Now this is something I can't wait to have. Very nice feature.

it'll only do it via the USB TV tuner. Surely most European countries have streamable live TV on tablet/smartphone already?

I can't imagine they'll let you stream the HDMI input - too many issues with copyright?

I chalk it up to them just wanting more features on there console than Sony. You are correct though.
