Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

No he doesn't.

If Microsoft are announcing this as an exclusive now, if probably means their money is being used to help fund the game. For a third-party publisher like Square that's not doing so well financially, covering the cost of development up front can be a huge boon, rather than gambling high development budgets on a potentially larger fanbase. Whatever the game goes on to sell, their initial investment for the game has likely been covered by Microsoft's funding.

I very much doubt there is an evil conspiracy here, and I don't think it's stupid financing. AAA development is getting more expensive. You're going to see more examples of platform holders subsidizing and funding third party games as the costs keep going up.

What are you talking about? Square-Enix has been turning a profit and doing fine.

This thread is so angry. This is why being a Wii U owner is good for your health, you don't expect shit to come anyway!

Between Mario 3D World and MK8, I'd say you don't need to care about third party games... :p

Over time these are the kind of games that help boost your sales. Sony caught up last generation with quality over quantity. Microsoft is on the right track.

Sony caught up last gen because they has Europe and Japan while the 360 has NA. The PS4 has the whole world, the X1 has nothing. Exclusives don't really do much

To put this in perspective, the game shipped 6.5 million copies, which is more than the last update we got for Final Fantasy XIII (6.3 million copies).

They actually took the biggest franchise they have and made it exclusive to a system where they'd have to sell to over 50% of the userbase to even get in the realm of their previous success.

Being nitpicky, but the last number for FFXIII was 6.6 million shipped.

Anyway, nothing a sale for Tomb Raider can't overcome. =P

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about PS culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is on XBOX where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over on PS, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the PS public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Tomb Raider for XB1, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and cancel Tomb Raider for XB1 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

I came for this.

There really is little doubt that Uncharted 4 factored in to this decision.

Also if FFXV or KH3 ever went exclusive the shitstorm to XB1 the shitstorm would be like nothing ever seen before.

would rage so hard and end up with permban

if this happened to XV it would be the end of gaf

Well, looks like I won't be playing the new tomb raider then cause i'm damn sure not buying an xbox for this, as much as I love the tomb raider franchise ( I own all of the games on multiple platforms) this to me is a huge middle finger to fans and me personally, maybe i'm overreacting but jesus is this a bad move by sqeenix/crystal, didn't the ps4 version of the definitive edition outsell the xbox one version? I'm still trying to wrap my head around this decision.

I hope it's truly exclusive as I will lift my ban on playing Tomb Raider because Definitive Edition never came to PC. Now Xbox One will become my Tomb Raider platform.

This is nothing folks. Wait until the Fallout 4 Xbox One exclusive deal. Shit will be bigger than Bayonetta 2, we'll have so much salt that Earth's gravitational center will change.

What I find amazing is that they announced it in Germany where 90% are Sony fanboys and by announcing it exclusively on Xbox One they just bitchslapped the whole audience.
Balls of steele

lol they only started making profit on the game near the release of the next gen port of the first game, this is shocking that it is exclusive, but it aint that hard to believe from a financial point of view ( ms paid them big)

Seems like a really stupid decision on Crystal Dynamics part.
I understand that Microsoft wanted to have an exclusive alternative to Uncharted 4 in holiday 2015.
But for CD? Have they seen where their sales are? This move is just gonna shrink their audience and piss off their fans. It's not gonna be worth for them.

It's Bayo 2 all over again, with a sprinkling of additional MS salt.
It's not remotely like Bayonetta 2. Bayonetta 2 wouldn't have existed without Nintendo. People being angry about that were stupid. Rise of the Tomb Raider would have existed without first party involvement and it's predecessor was on nearly everything.

This is so weird, why would you take your biggest IP and make it exclusive ? Really smart move from MS, since the game will release in holiday 2015 they will have a direct competitor to UC4. But I can't see want SE gain from this, MS must have paid a shitload of money.

I quite enjoyed the last game. I hope this one will be good. As a Xbox owner, I wish the Playstation 4 owners could play it as well. =/

I actually think the high sales is the reason this did happen; as many pointed out, this is a great counterpoint to UC series. It fills a hole in the MSFT line up of not having a platformer of this caliber.

Good god the PS bias on this forum is sickening. Constant jibes about 900p 30fps, shot themselves in the foot etc... etc...

Is there anywhere on GAF where adults share their opinion rather than angsty teenagers with a severe brand loyalty delusion?
Ps4 ? What about the pc guys that loved this game that got shafted with this ? Stop
Dude
Also to the guys saying this is profitable and not desperation .. This game did not sell well like the publishers expected it to even on three platforms, they could've moneyhatted a better one that would have floored everything, also
I agree , didn't this game sold less on xbox ?

Trying to position Tomb Raider as the AAA competitor to Uncharted, eh? Makes sense, making a game exclusive lends them some mystical fanboy aura they will likely try to exploit.

If that is what they trying this going to fall right back into the face for SE.
UC sell 5.5 million plus on one system , TR need 5 system , steam sales and a extra edition just to get to 6 million.

I'm sure they're making money off the backend due to the deal. Plus they get to sell a definitive version a year later for even more money.

That's on the assumption that RotTR can overcome its handicaps ( both on exclusivity and brand image ) next year and still leap out to be as big as the reboot was.

Did Bayonetta 2 get this sort of response?

That's totally different. She has only had one game, and it would have ended there unless Nintendo funded a second game.

She also isn't the icon that Lara is (alongside Mario and Sonic). Lara's whole history has been PC and Playstation based and now it seems she has said bye to those platforms.

I love the Tomb Raider games, played pretty much all of the games on PC, applaud CD for what they've done to that franchise so far but making it exclusive to one platform or even console seems just as insulting, imo.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I was talking about their blog post. :)

You know, I don't think it's up to CD. Probably just SE. But yea, if MS actually thinks this will compete with UC then that's an even bigger lol. Waste of money if that's the case

hmm.. partly bad news. Played the original series of tomb raider on playstation 1 and pc back in the days.
But I didn't really enjoyed the new direction of Tomb Raider 2013, where raiding tombs is optional.
And I think they said, that they want to go in another direction with TR and its reboot, and will make it even more clearly with RotTR, so maybe they should rename it, when it's not about tomb raiding anymore? But they won't, because LEGO Justice League, is Lego Batman 3 for a reason.

so.... RotTR exclusivley for XBox One, doesn't sound so off, especially if you know that Microsoft is willing to throw almost every amount of money at someone, just to get the XBone selling and TR is not really a TR.
