Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

this seems nothing more then salty PS4 owners.

All this about MS and square taking the game way from players is bullshit.

using that logic is no different then saying sony and ninja theory are taking away hellblade from players. It does not matter if its a new I.P, sony are still paying for exclusivity and therefore taking the game away from X1 players - according to the same logic

The bottom line is this is a good thing for MS and sqaure and a bad thing for sony.

It absolutely DOES matter whether or not it's a new IP. Releasing Tomb Raider games on PS4 (Definitive Edition), and then making sequels exclusives is a much different thing than making a franchise exclusive from the start.

This seems like a strange game to choose to me. Why Tomb Raider? I mean it's a pretty big franchise, but it's not going to move consoles.

Consider that lots and lots of people are naturally going to be curious about the new Tomb Raider game when it releases. They're then going to investigate PS3 and PS4 versions, only to discover that they don't actually exist, which is a pretty big talking point, as we've seen. This topic of conversation then snowballs and publicly reinforces the statement that Microsoft is serious as a heart attack about Xbone and securing exclusives for it, which makes buyers feel more comfortable about supporting it and receiving future cherry exclusives.

It's basically taking advantage of the high profile branding Tomb Raider carries to get people talking about Xbox, and buying Xbox hardware, two birds with one no doubt expensive stone. And if they keep doing stuff like this, it'll probably pay off, at least in terms of re-establishing their hardware.

If it's permanent I'm gonna flip my shit Joe Vargas style. I'm just going to assume that we are hearing scripted corporate speak to hide the fact that it's timed. Of course I thought the same about Titanfall once upon a time...

TF was painfully obvious a timed exclusive since a reveal.

It's been done before, not because it's being taken away fromSony that it's worse. In this case, I want my final fantasy back to Nintendo platforms. That's where it all started and where it should end!

Except that for many it does. Also we know Hellblade is only a timed exclusive, same with No Man's Land.

Yeah it does to PS4 owners, I thought tomb raider was also a timed exclusive for x1?.

Even if it is not, maybe MS are being big nasty people trying to take your game away.

Well no shit, this is a business and they are in competition, if sony cared so much for the players why didnt they make a counter offer?

Is it possible that the game had some development/financial issues and they reached out to the platform holders and it was MS that decided to fund the game development? If I was a business and I invested my money into the development of a game I would want it exclusive for my system.

Again, that is speculation since none of us really knows what the details of this deal are. We know that with Titanfall that MS did fund the development for the most part, who is to say this is not happening with Tomb Raider?

I know there is a lot of butt hurt going on in this thread and I can understand it to a certain extent, but unless we know what the details are, isn't most of the hate just bullshit? If a company dumps money into the development of a game, isn't it right that they ask for it to be exclusive? I doubt that any of you would pay for a game to be developed, but then say "yeah we paid to have this game made, but yeah go ahead and put it on my competitors system".

Just my 2 cents on the matter.

It's possible, but not probable. Titanfall had a lot of obstacles in the way due to the Activision lawsuits against the folks from Infinity Ward, leading to one of the guys leaving Respawn because he just couldn't handle the stress anymore. That game was literally on the ledge for being way behind schedule for EA.

I don't see the same happening with Rise of the Planet of the Apes Tomb Raider.

TR2013 broke even for SE, wouldn't be crazy to think they need financial help.

god this place is crazy.

If this was Sony people would going nuts and laughing at MS.

MS can't do anything right with most of you.

Just as a curiousity, when was the last time Sony outright purchased exclusivity for a game that had been announced already and had no reason to think it wouldnt be multiplat?

What about PC gamers? Who'd make a counter off on their behalf?

We'll most likely never know if MS approached Square or if Square approached MS.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

PC owners want to play this game as well chief.

The thing that still gets me is that Tomb Raider DE sold best on PS4, by a wide margin. It even performed better on the PS4 too. For them to just turn around and do that to this community that embraced them is just sleazy. I respect that they saw an opportunity with MS and took it, but I don't respect the rejection of a supportive fan base that just recently helped their franchise the most in the transition to the new generation.

What were they thinking?

SE is so short sighted. They saw that MS check and knew it would look good to their investors to get money up front.

At least they won't complain about missing their sales goal after it flops.

Not too sure your point...? OK, it was shitty when done before and it's shitty now. I was explaining why TR exclusivity is not the same as Hellblade.

Indie dev going to the rapture. They needed help funding it, took the money and it's no longer going to pc.

Not the same thing. As SE has no issue with a marquee franchise. But closest I could think of

It's clearly Square Enix. MS made an offer, nothing wrong with that, Crystal Dynamics are the developers, they don't own the IP. Square Enix basically said fuck the fans and took the money.

They won't?! You have too much faith in humanity my friend. You will be disappointed :)

I have a question.

Is Microsoft funding this game like Nintendo did with Bayonetta 2 or did they pay a lot of money to have it exclusive to them?

notice in the actual blog post they are careful to keep "holiday 2015" in there. this is the whole reason for the confusion
Until they spell it out and say "It will never come to a non-Xbox platform" it remains timed. Every single PR statement has a variation of "Holiday 2015 Xbox exclusive".

As far as I'm aware, Titanfall will never be coming to PS3/4. I think what they were alluding to were sequels.

I'm talking about from the time from the E3 in June reveal to the EA announcement. One of the devs even said it was timed exclusive to start with here a couple months ago.

Eh, seems like a huge waste of money for Microsoft. This isn't going to make me buy an Xbox One. I'll just wait until Jan/Feb 2016 (or however much later) when the PS4 version comes out and get it then. I've never seen the point of Timed Exclusives, they have absolutely no impact on what system I'll purchase a game on.

How about instead of pissing away money on this pointless shit use it on making original and new content for your system and make me actually want to become a customer. That seems like a better use of resources than moneyhatting timed multiplats. The only games I'm even remotely interested in at this point are Halo 5 and Scalebound and there's dick all else on the horizon. That's not enough to make me a customer and neither is this bullshit.

I don't own a PS4, they took away my PC version, your argument is invalid and bad.

MS want people to buy an X1 for it. So knowing MS it will most likely come to the PC Later.

These kind of deals are actually done to try and boost the sales and mindshare of the platform there coming out on, and in this case it aint the PC.

it maybe invalid and bad to you, but its the truth.

B, definitely. I'm not going to blame any of the big three for attempting to get an exclusive, even though I detest money hats and would rather a game be exclusive because a particular platform is the only one with a particular feature set that is crucial to the game. SE are at fault for either seeking said money hat or accepting with the accompanied middle finger given to its fans who have played at least the previous 5 titles either on PC or a PS platform.

EDIT: Assuming it doesn't end up being just a timed exclusive as it seems to be right now. In which case, still SE giving a middle finger by being intentionally manipulative about their announcement.
