So like you're a kid whose grown with Mario his whole life and then you hear a niece Nintendo system is coming out, and you see this new Mario game is coming out and you're like cool I want it.

And then when you plug it in and you turn it on, there's nothing quite like this.

You're greeted with this pre game presentation showing you all the crazy shit that await after everything starts happening on the screen.
You then start the game right away there's 3 levels to choose from, if you go left you get a rather typical Mario levels but with some diagonal ledges until you confront the giant bullet bill, and you're like huh Thea's crazy, right from the start??

But if you go right you get yoshi right away and you're like huh, what is this - holy shit I'm on a dinasAur look at all at what I can do! This game is blowing my mind!

A few semi ordinary levels with some great twist, (falling smashing things?) you get to the level with the cape, and you're suddenly open to all this many new abilities you can do on the game! Underground levels work different and 'what's that? You can unlock secret levels by finding hidden exits? Crazy!

After that you get the ghost houses which I guess some castles in Mario 3 we're confusing but this one was full of misdirections! Game goes on and on until the last levels. There's even a secret whole new area hidden from most people!

Coming from Mario 3 this game just set itself off to prove it was gonna blow your mind. Like every level introduces a new gimmick?

At the time it was somewhat overshadowed by Sonic, and while well-received, was seen as more of the same.

(I was a lot more impressed by Actraiser and F-Zero.)

SMW did indeed blow my mind. I thought it was crazy that the world map was one huge thing all connected instead of the sectioned-off portions in 3. Plus, the wealth of secrets was incredible to me.

I liked it but I don't remember being amazed by it.

Edit: Seeing the Dreamcast games for the 1st time really is the only time I remember a leap between the games I was playing on a older console & the new games on a new system blowing my mind. I think that had more to do with the physics how stuff was moving around as you played the games it was just different.

I never really liked it much, or at least I didn't care about it. Granted, I didn't play it back when it came out, but I also didn't play SMB3 until much later and I did love it. I should give it another chance, because it's still a good game after all.

A niece Nintendo system you say?

But yes it was quite amazing, especially the music and colors coming from NES.

Well my problem with Super Mario "World" was the world was super empty, the characters were flat (WHERE WAS THE CHARACTERIZATION?) and the multiplayer was lacking. It was just click on a button, watch an intro, hit the goal and repeat over and over. (Sonic 2 had a 2 player simultaneous mode was this in Mario? NO.) It also didn't really do anything new. Cape? Same as the raccoon really. Talk a massive uninnovative letdown. At the time, I have it a 6 out of ten, and I was being generous.

When the SNES came out I remember seeing a short piece on the news about it. The clip showed a tiny bit of gameplay footage from the first level, wherein a huge Bullet Bill shot across the screen. My (9-year-old) mind was blown. It was GIGANTIC. Clearly the size of the enemy was an indication that this system had processing power of EPIC PROPORTIONS. My hype levels went off the charts.

Of course there's really big enemies in NES games too, and I must have seen them? I don't know how I arrived at the conclusion I did. I just remember ranting to all my friends about what I'd seen.

I found Super Mario World to be absolutely amazing at the time. It's still my favorite Mario titles of all time because of the graphics, music and sound effects.

Yes, I got the system as a gift and played it when it came out in the US in September 1991 and it definitely blew my mind. The sound and visuals were crazy upgrading from an NES, and the cape/Yoshi combo was great. I also remember really being blown away by the detail in the world map.

Mario 64 was the real mind blowing Mario game. They still haven't matched it yet actually.
This is true though. Even though I was older, I remember seeing this at Toys R Us for the first time and I was floored.

Although it has been surpassed in technical quality by many other games, SMW is still the historical example of the perfect 2D platformer. It's a masterpiece.

As someone who was was 9 at the time and got a Snes on launch day and stayed up with a friend until we beat it that night and discovered tons of secrets/hidden exits. Yes, yes it did. Mind blown is an understatement!

It was my first mario game and one of my first games period, so yeah it kinda blew my mind. Explored every inch. We had Super Mario Allstars but I could never beat SMB3, too hard on those last levels. I should really go back nd beat that game proper some day (and not use bajillion whistles)

Super Mario 64 was the first Mario game that blew my mind primarily because I wasn't old enough to really appreciate how great SM3/SMW was.

I was 7 when Mario 64 came out, though, and how I remember that Christmas.

According to Console Wars by Blake Harris, it was the biggest piece of shit ever and the reason Sega was able to get a foothold in the industry with a mediocre game championed by amazing marketing.

6 year old Megalosaro thought it was pretty swell though

Actually for me it was very underwhelming. Mario 3 blew minds... I expected more from a new system.

Pretty much. Mario 3 was the game changer. Mario world is 3 with a better coat of paint.

It was all about the Genesis by then anyway. Sonic and segas marketing machine were just too much for Nintendo to deal with.

The cape was a cooler powerup than the tanooki suit, other than that I preferred Super Mario World's level variety and found the creature design to be more interesting than Super Mario Bros. 3. Plus the soundtrack to SMW was amazing.

I can't speak for that in terms of the gameplay itself, as 3D Land is the only Mario I've played since the N64 days.

But in terms of it's impact on the industry? Absolutely.

I don't undertstand at all why the OP choose THIS Mario game as the "mindblowing" one when the series has SMB1, SMB3, Mario 64 and Galaxy. Seriously... all of those were more "mindblowing" than SMW.

All of the Mario games up through SM64 looked pretty cool in stores and magazines (except for SMB2 which I did not know existed, only SMBUSA), even Collection/All Stars.

Sunshine was the one that broke that combo. Really poor marketing by NoA for that game.

Redeemed by Galaxy.

I still remember the first time I saw the commercial for it on TV. I was awestruck. One of the defining moments in my lifelong love affair with games. Could not get over the colours and the style.

I recently beat it for the first time. It's weird explaining it, but I personally prefer SMB3, even if only slightly.

Coming to get ya!

The first thing that blew my mind about SMW was seeing a diagram of the SNES controller and learning that the game had every button mapped to something. And then there were eight more entire pages of the manual dedicated to flying/swimming controls. This really drove home the evolution of console gaming to me.

Oh and the colossal sprites. Those were a trip.

I don't like it much either personally, and I agree with that most platforming isn't that good.
But just seems like it distances itself from the typical Mario framework (1 and 3, Mario 2 just was too far out there heh.
Every level is so different from the past level and time abs there's all these different things it that are hidden away in each level.

I don't know it feels mire crazy than just a supercharged Mario game compared to the new ones.

I never particularly cared for it. I didn't actually have a SNES as a child, but we had one at the daycare my mom worked at, so I played it a bit and liked it, but usually just went home and played SMB3. So speaking for 5-6 year old me at the time, mind wasn't blown, no.

I grew up with Mario games and SMW was just okay. The graphics felt a little bland and it just didn't feel like the totally novel experience SMB2 or SMB3 felt like.

As others have said, though: Mario 64 was crazy. There really was nothing like it, it was the same impact as the original SMB... maybe even more.

I have to disagree. Mario 2 (USA) distances itself from the rest. Lost Levels (the real Mario 2) is far superior.
