2015 is 3 months away

Super sampled from 1440p to 1080p...and open world.

WiiU is super computer confirmed - I will buy one if it can do that.

Weak comeback dude. 0/10.

You've also forgotten I own a PS4, so there's the small matter of Remote Play ;)

OP doesn't say that he dislikes Nintendo games, just that he hasn't really played them, he is also holding 3 of the best games made last gen for the console already. Lets put our console war away and be honest, Wii U offers a different experience than he is getting from the 4 other consoles, its library is almost entirely made from exclusives. Your comment about him having his bases covered with those 4 consoles is the most dishonest thing I've ever heard you say.

He shouldn't need a thread like this, but he's a fellow gamer, no reason to lie to the guy.

Well, i can give you a few good reasons to get a WiiU.

Backwards Compatible

All current Wii software is compatible with the WiiU, unfortunetly the GC games are not (as of yet). So you can enjoy them classic games you've got there.

You can play Earthbound without it costing an arm and a leg

Earthbound is available on the WiiU Virtual Console for a fraction of the price of an orginal SNES cart, and it's a fine game to play.

Loads of Great games

At the moment, the WiiU has some great games already out there, which include (and not limited to)

Mario Kart 8 - New DLC coming in November and May
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
Pikmin 3
Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate
Super Mario 3D World
The Wonderful 101

Of course, there are many other great games coming in 2014 and beyond. Including

Bayonetta 2
Yoshi's Wolly World
Super Smash Brothers
Splatoon
Mario Maker

I'm only naming a few, but there are loads of great games in retail or on the Virtual Console/eShop ready for download.

Yes it is worth it, because:

A.) Wii has a fantastic library, you have three of the best games last gen on any console already, and Wii U will allow you to play those

B.) Wii U is home to some of the best current gen available to date. I'm sure people have made lists already of what's out there.

C.) You already have xbone and ps4, so you aren't getting Wii U at the expense of not having either of those.

I still have Metroid Prime Trilogy Mario Galaxy and Xenoblade, none of which I have played.

You sold yourself on it OP... you sold yourself.

Wii U currently has the best console exclusives, by a country mile. You are already covered for the big multi-plat games so it works as a perfect addition (I have PS3, PS4 and Wii U).

Some of them like Wonderful 101 and ZombiU can be found quite cheaply these days also.

This is the proper answer.
From OP:
Is it worth buying a WiiU? What are the games I should play that I can't get anywhere else? I have never really been a Nintendo gamer, so don't quite know what I'm missing.

This doesn't mean that he doesn't like Nintendo games, simply that he hasn't really played them, besides "Nintendo games" is too broad now, I mean what genre exactly are we referring to? I know Miyamoto think's it should be it's own genre, but it isn't, Nintendo makes a lot of different types of games. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Smash Brothers, MarioKart, Star Fox, Sin & Punishment, Pikmin, Rhythm Heaven, Animal Crossing... ect ect ect.

They really are nothing alike and we haven't even mentioned the 3rd party exclusives, I know you are trying to be a voice of reason, but the answer isn't as clear as you are trying to make it appear to be. If he doesn't know what he is missing, then he really does need to try it out.

I'm certain that he will find more value in it than owning both a PS4 and XB1, the overlap with the XB1 is ridiculous, so if that was worth his $400-$500, I think Wii U might have some gems worth the $200 it costs to pick up a refurbished one from Nintendo at the very least.

Is it? People (especially those new to the platform) don't usually think of Monster Hunter, ZombiU, Xenoblade X, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta (2), Devil's Third, Fatal Frame... when thinking about Nintendo games.

Wonderful 101 is technically a Nintendo game.

I just got my bonus and feel like buying myself a present. I have a PS3,PS4,360 and X1. I already owned a wii but lost it in a break up, though I still have Metroid Prime Trilogy Mario Galaxy and Xenoblade, none of which I have played.

Is it worth buying a WiiU? What are the games I should play that I can't get anywhere else? I have never really been a Nintendo gamer, so don't quite know what I'm missing.

Cheers in advance.

You're missing out on the best gameplay ever seen in a video game - and silky smooth 60 fps all around. Also the best multiplayer games in town. And remote play. And you can try out all the Wii games you probably missed out on. And, and, and...

Anyway:

Donkey Kong: TF is the best 2D platformer game ever made

Super Mario 3D World is the best 3D platformer game ever made (and AMAZING 4 player co-op)

The Wonderful 101 is just... wonderful

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on Wii U is my favorite fighting game out right now

Super Mario Kart 8 = the best MK yet, and a friggin' blast

Monter Hunter Ultimate 3 - you will lose yourself in this game

(yes these are just my opinions)

On the Horizon:

Bayonetta 1&2 = holy shit hype
Hyrule Warriors probably gonna be the best Musou / action slasher game yet
Super Smash Bros. Wii U = yep
Xenoblade X
Fatal Frame
Devil's Third (probably gonna be terrible but fun)

Not to mention every amazing Wii game - Xenoblade Chronicles, SM Galaxy 1&2, LoZ: TP and SS, etc...

It's worth it.

I'll tell a tale of when I was extremely happy that I had bought it.

I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth out and was bedridden from the pain for about 4 days. Sure, I had copious amounts of drugs so it wasn't all that bad, but what really saved my sanity was my WiiU. A WiiU doesn't need a TV to be played, you can just use the gamepad. I bought several SNES and GBA games on the virtual console, and I brought all of the games I owned that could be played without a TV (In my case, Wonderful 101 and Child of Light). All of these games just need the console and gamepad to be played, and I sat in bed doing that.

"But what if I get bored of games?", you may ask, the WiiU also allows instant video streaming. Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant Video are all available (No Crunchyroll if you watch anime, sorry. Thats the only thing I'm bummed about) and you can watch amazing shows as well. Best purchase I've made in a while.

What proof do you have that the trailer shown was supersampled though? Talking about the actual video here and not the screenshots.

Look it up on beyond 3D pixel counters, must of said this numerous times now on GAF I am not looking and providing the links yet again.

Comes up in every image quality thread / bullshots.

Bullshots really annoy me, no matter what the system. Its deception.

I'll add that off-TV play is great even if you live alone. NFL/NBA on the TV + gaming on the gamepad = awesome. I also find myself playing VC and eShop games on the gamepad almost exclusively.

Does the Wii U play regular Wii games?

I never ended up getting the original Wii so that would be pretty snazzy (buying a Wii U anyway eventually).

All the amazing WiiU games plus all the amazing Wii games you missed will offer you probably 5-10 years of endless fun.

The WiiU advanced to my second fav console of all time within a single year.

edit: ^ yes it is 100% backwards compatible

Mario Kart 8
Bayonetta 2
Rayman Legends
Windwaker HD
Zombi U
Super Mario 3D World
Donkey Kong TF

all incredible games.

Pikmin 3, Lego City, deus ex,NSFU, Monster Hunter and W101 all worth a shout too.

Really underrated console.

In my opinion it's a no-brainer if you really dig platformers. I've put a ton of hours into just Tropical Freeze and 3D World.

It's a bit more complicated if your preferences don't skew that way, but there are some interesting titles from other genres already out for the system. I personally really like Wonderful 101 and ZombiU. Bayonetta 1+2 is on the horizon, too.

Also, I'm playing Metroid Prime Trilogy right now. Those games hold up so well and play really nicely with Wii remote controls. So that backwards compatibility would be nice for you.

I wouldn't bother, you sound like you have your console bases covered. Spend the extra on PS4 / XBone games.

Except that the Wii U has a bunch of games he can't buy on those systems, AND he already has three excellent Wii games to play on it as well. If you don't have access to Nintendo games (unless you absolutely hate them) than I'd hardly consider one as having their console bases covered.

Do it man! You'll be glad you did just to play the three Wii games you already own, but then you have access to some pretty damn good exclusive software as well. I won't bother listing those games as everyone else already has.

It depends on whether you like gameplay-focused games or narrative-focused games. If you like the former the Wii U is a no brainer. The gameplay in games like the Wonderful 101, Bayonetta, Super Mario 3d world, Mario Kart 8 etc. is second to none.

Oh, I also just found out I'm a Monster Hunter fan. That really increased the WiiU's value proposition for me, as it's the only way to play 3U online while waiting for 4 to hit the US. Unless, of course, you import a 3DS. :)

Yes ... needs wiimote/classic controler/nunchuck/whatever the wii game needed originaly.

ALso, if you want to have a considerable amount of work, you can even homebrew it to play gamecube games
with a ps4 controller

I have an old 500GB portable HDD laying around. Can I just plug that into one of the Wii U's USB ports and be okay?

Just get a cheap ass Wii: There's not a single WiiU game that's even in the same league as the ones you have for the original Wii currently. There will not be a decent amount of WiiU games until the end of 2015 (or even 2016) either, while the Wii had tons of hidden gems that can hold you over until then, if you really are in the mood for something different. Paying the extra money for WiiU hardware isn't worth it currently. The fact that people try to hype it up with literal shovelware like Zelda Warriors from Koei, the umpteenth New Mario Map Pack (which has the only worthwhile iteration on the original Wii anyway), titles that are still at least 2 years away (including Zelda, don't believe anyone gullible enough saying this will be out soon lol), or titles that have high risks of not even coming out here (Fatal Frame), is pretty telling of how desperate the situation on WiiU is. Also, most of the 200-300 bucks for the console go to the controller, which is pretty worthless all around. Outside of minigame shlock, there's maybe one or two titles at best that benefit from it and for the most part, it actually cripples the console (Currently, I can't even enter the system settings, because my charger is broken and even that one is unique and can only be repaired by Nintendo and not be bought). I mean, if Off TV is really your thing, you might as well get a 3DS. Just like the original Wii, it covers most of the experiences you can get on the WiiU, but offers many more - including actual 3rd party support.
Even the online store in Wii U is shit and you won't miss out anything if you only get a cheap Wii (just not the Wii Mini, which doesn't have online features). The choice of classic platforms and games has become truly huge on the original Virtual Console, meanwhile the one on Wii U is currently tracking to not even have a fraction of it even in it's whole lifetime.
Also, not being a Nintendo gamer, does that mean you never had a gamecube? Because the original Wii can still play that one too, while the Wii U can't. GCN also had several of the best games of it's generation and again, tons of hidden gems - while Wii U just had a 2 year long drought and again, isn't gonna be worth it until it has more games accumulated at the end of 2016 or something. I have always been gaming primarely on Nintendo platforms, but I unfortunately can't deny that the WiiU is quite a trashy product and if you aren't a Nintendo fan to begin with, or you wanna get into their libraries, this would be by far the worst choice you can make.

Do you ever look at your PS4 and think, I wish this system had something other than annualized shooters, sports games, last gen remasters, and "open world" collect-a-thons?

That's why the Wii U exists.

For the most part yes. Does it have an external power supply? If not you'll want to get a Y-usb cable.

I understand not being into certain games but shovelware? Map pack? I haven't said this of anyone's opinion on here before, but get the fuck out of here with that ignorant bullshit.

Chances are that you probably need external alimentation like a power cord or an y cable (1 on the HD and 2 on the wiiu)

Even if this was all true, the Wii U allows for HDMI out, which improves the Wii picture quality quite a bit IMO. It also has complete Wii support, meaning access to all of the Wiiware titles and VC through Wii mode. You are literally saying 'Don't future proof, just buy a Wii now and a Wii U at the end of 2015 or 2016' When he can buy a Wii U for $200 directly from Nintendo, how is buying a Wii somehow better? heck you can even quick launch directly into Wii mode so that it is never even a Wii U. Your opinion makes no sense at all, especially when he owns everything else already.

What ?

The images where analysed at Beyond 3D, look it up yourself. If you believe that it was running in 1080p super sampled from 1440, then fine.

I would be in for a new Zelda, but I am realistic of what to expect.

Is it not a bit wrong convincing someone to buy a console using a bullshot of a 2015 game ?

Okay, apparently you don't get what I'm saying here. Look at the bullshots then look at the trailer again. The one of link running away from the creature on his horse and the one of him with his bow are from two camera angles never seen in the actual video. So those screens are not direct captures from the trailer shown at E3. Sure you may be right about the screenshots but we don't have a good enough representation of the video to say whether it was supersampled or not.

Also, I've tried as hard as I can to google search Beyond3d for the analysis of the screens you keep telling me about but I keep getting nothing. I've searched all of these terms "beyond3d, Zelda, e3 ,bullshot, supersampled, downsampled, 1440p, 1080p" and still nothing. As a matter of fact the first result that pops up are links to your posts on GAF talking about it. Honestly I just want a link to the thread to see for myself, and it's not that I don't believe you, I've just always been interested in these sorts of things and it would be something I'd really like to read up on.

Hmm, where can I get those? Gamestop? Radio Shack? My external is the nonpowered kind. This news is kind of a problem because I wanted to get an ethernet adapter and the Gamecube controller adapter for it. But the Y-cable would take up two slots, the ethernet adapter another, and from I've seen the GC adapter takes up two USB slots.

Is the wireless good enough to ditch the ethernet adapter?

I bought a Wii U this summer and it was a great decision. Taking advantage of buying the refurb deal, the Mario Kart and Target promotions, I ended getting the system and a ton of games for like $400 altogether. I am still working my way through everything but it's very obvious that this is an excellent system with tons of high end material.

So far I have:

Mario 3D Land: I generally agree that this is not as good as the Mario Galaxies, but at the same time I am enjoying it more than I probably would have a Galaxy 3, just because it is a refreshing take on 3D Mario. The levels are clever and have tons of secrets.

Wonderful 101: Available for like $20. Awesome beat em up / action game. Unique approach, rewarding combat, and clever / fun motif.

Mario Kart 8: I mean, you know what you're getting. It's a really good HD Mario Kart. DLC is basically the deal of the century. Play it with your friends, everyone has a great time.

Pikmin 3: Still early, but obviously much better than the previous Pikmin games (which I also loved). Great controls, gorgeous environments, better puzzles, and more satisfying management with multiple human characters. Strikes a nice balance between Pikmin 1's 30 day limit and Pikmin 2's infinite time.

Donkey Kong TF: I haven't even played yet (too many Wii U games keeping me busy!), but this is often considered one of, if not the best 2D platformer of all time. As a fan of the first, despite it's potential for improvements, I believe it.

Nintendo Land: Came with the refurb. I'm sure I'll play it eventually. People seem to like it.

NES Remix 2: Fun challenges based on Metroid, Mario 2 and 3, Zelda 2, Kirby's Adventure, Kid Icarus, Punch Out, and others. Fun for either tickling the nostalgia bone or for experiencing the classics for the first time in a well packaged way.

Child of Light: Gorgeous RPG with Grandia styled combat. Also some annoying rhyming.

Earthbound: GOAT.

Shovel Knight: Mega man 2, Mario 3, Zelda 2 and Ducktales: the consolidated sequel.

That's just what I have. Other people will tell you that you should play Rayman Legends, ZombiU, Lego City, Monster Hunter, or Scram Kitty. There's an HD remake of Wind Waker and NSMBU. People seem to like those.

Hands down the best current gen system at the moment, and that's before even considering the Wii classics you have at you fingertips to play with BC. I am sure that PS4 and XBone will close the gap or catch up over time, but in the meantime you'll have Bayonetta 1/2, Smash, Splatoon, Xenoblade X, and Zelda.

Buying a Wii U is a great decision, and it's cheap because the sales have been so disappointing. Your get a 10% credit for all digital purposes. Off screen play can be really handy. There's a reason "Just bought a Wii U, another satisfied customer" threads have been popping up steadily over the last few months.

Also, don't forget to look at the Wii classics.
