My Gigabyte Osmium board had become really unreliable awhile back. So I'd been looking at new boards for awhile. I considered the k70 RGB for some time, but some of the user reviews on Newegg mentioned they had malfunction problems. That was too similar to the problems with my Osmium, so it put me off that board.
Since I wanted something more likely to be reliable, I decided to go the minimalist route and started to look at tenkeyless, non-backlit boards. Smaller boards like the Poker II looked nice to me as well, but I use my dedicated arrow keys too much to get one of those. From what I researched on places like geekhack, it seemed like the best tenkeyless boards were Filcos or Cooler Master's QuickFire Rapid.
The Filco's were a bit too expensive on Amazon and I didn't really like the look of the QFR. Then I found a
geekhack topic about a board that was released this year by Keyed Up Labs. It looked nice and had build quality comparable or possibly better than a Filco while being cheaper. So I ended up buying the Cherry red version of it from
Amazon.
I've had it for a few days now and it's great! Key caps have a nice textured feel instead of the smooth plastic on the Osmium. The case's plastic feels solid as a brick. I use a keyboard tray, so it's nice to not have 1/3 of my mousepad taken up from the numpad sitting on it. It comes with a PS/2 adapter, so I've freed up a USB port and get full N-key rollover. There's no special driver to worry about installing, which is a plus. And it works in the BIOS, unlike the Osmium.
I do miss the dedicated volume wheel of my previous board, but I'm getting used to using Fn+F11/F12 and I have buttons on my G500 mouse set to control volume as well. I can touch type, so no backlighting isn't a huge loss. Geekhack mentioned how the larger keys have Cherry stabilizers, which make those keys feel "mushier" than the others when bottoming out. It was pretty noticable when I first started using the board, but now I barely feel it and don't think it's much of an issue for me.
Overall I think it's an awesome board and I think it'll last me a long time.
