Lez talk mechanical keyboards

Just grabbed my Das Keyboard 4 Professional that was dropped off this evening and brought it back to work. First mechanical keyboard, and so far I'm enjoying it. The clicking noise isn't as obnoxious if it's coming from me, I guess....

Usually I keep my keyboard legs folded, but for this I found that I am having to use the included stand/ruler (lol), which I was somewhat worried about since I heard that the magnets didn't really secure it very well. So far, I don't have any complaints, but I have only used it for about 10 minutes.

Oooh. I want a DAS Keyboard 4 Pro. That looks so awesome.

I want to get a gunmetal k70 with reds but i'm hesitant after hearing all the horror stories of dead leds. Is there an alternative that also has a dedicated set of media keys like the k70, has either blue or no leds at all, and is black? Thanks.

There is another version of the K70 coming up that should have much more reliable LEDs, and you can change the backlight colour to whatever you'd like.

k70 RGB should be out now. It's more expensive, but is the k70 with a better lighting system and the LEDs mounted within the switch to prevent the static electricity shocks that were killing the original k70s LEDs.

Edit: Was delayed two months apparently ^

I can confirm that. 6 LEDs failed on my gunmetal K70 (blue LEDs), I requested a RMA and they will send me a K70 with red LEDs which are according to them less prone to failing.

Too bad. I loved the brushed aluminium with blue LEDs.

Received my WASD V2 today. Tenkeyless, Mac layout with Cherry MX Red switches. My first mechanical coming from the stock iMac keyboard I've been using for two generations of iMac now.

That keyboard was like a sixth the size of this one so it's going to take some time to acclimate...

Das 4 Professional
K70 RGB will supposedly fix the LED problems the older models had

Edit: Beaten

I have a question.

If I own a Mionix Zibal 60, can I just buy any replacement key caps for it?

I wouldn't mind adding some colour to this beast :)

Is there anyone here who actually prefers reds for typing?

I'm looking into getting my first mechanical keyboard and I'm tempted to get myself a Ducky Zero with red switches, as I like the idea of super light switches. (It's also on sale right now in Canada) MX blues also seem a bit loud for my tastes. That said, I am a bit apprehensive because it seems to be generally agreed upon that linear switches aren't good for typing, which is something I'll be doing a lot of as a CS student.

I personally prefer Browns to Reds for typing.
I would probably get used to Reds eventually but when I used my friend's MX Red keyboard it was tough not to typo here and there.

So I've gone ahead and ordered myself a tenkeyless Ducky Zero with Brown switches. I ended up deciding to go with brown because I figured I should get something good for typing as I'll be doing a lot of that, but the blue switches were just too loud for me. The browns also fare better in gaming from what I understand, so that's nice. I'll post impressions when I get it and have used it for a bit.

I prefer reds for everything. I find it easiest to not bottom out on it, and enjoy the linear feel. I started on blues too.

So my tenkeyless Ducky Zero with browns came in today. All the way from Vancouver, which might be the first time I've had something ship from somewhere other than Toronto. Loving it so far. To be honest, the first biggest improvement so far is the extra room I now have on the pullout tray. Before my mouse used to be pretty squeezed in there, but now I have my keyboard set up closer to center with plenty of space for my mouse, which has done wonders in terms of ergonomics, although it might also help that I've now taken this time to set up my desk/monitor/chair height so that everything is in "proper" position now.

The keys are indeed much more satisfying to type on. To be honest, at first I wasn't really impressed and I wasn't a fan of how much higher the keys were than on my old keyboard (Sidewinder X4). But now after a day of typing and playing on the Ducky my old keyboard just feels kinda nasty. I guess it just took me a little bit to get used to the mechanical keyboard but now I love it.

Another thing I noticed with the keyboard is that it seems more responsive, in the sense that there seemed to be less of a lag between pressing a key and something happening on screen. It might just be the placebo effect, but it's something I really noticed playing Counter-Strike.

Cherry MX Brown keys actuate when they're pressed about half of the way down (just after you feel the "bump"), so the amount of travel needed to actually do stuff may be less than your old keyboard even if the total travel distance is more.

Has anybody ever had the chance of testing a filco, ducky and leopold keyboard? How do they compare to each other? I found a really cheap filco keyboard a couple years ago and I'm afraid I won't get so lucky again, should this one start malfunctioning at some point. How do ducky and leopold keyboards compare to filcos?

Newegg has the RazerBlackwidow Ultimate 2014 Black Elite Mechanical Keyboard with a $10 GC for $99. Must be making way for the chroma? anyone with problems like LEDs going out quickly? not a fan of the synapse software. Hrm. So very tempting.

Sorry, big keyboard noobster here, just got a little question:
If I buy a Razer BlackWidow, am I getting all the benefit of mechanical keyboards? The OP makes me think I need to buy the keys separately?

I still have my CM Storm Quickfire Pro which is a great keyboard, but I am thinking of switching to one that has full backlighting instead of just the WSAD area.

That K70 linked earlier looks really enticing, but the Ducky Legend looks good as well (although I cannot seem to find anywhere to actually price/purchase it?)

Prefer Brown switches, or any other that has some resistance to it while not being deafeningly loud.

Any other suggestions from your personal experience?

EDIT: Was also looking at this one as potential.

Yes, it's a full keyboard with all mechanical switches. The switch talk in the OP is just a comparison of the different types of switches that are available.

What is a decent mechanical KB with reds that includes n-key rollover?

I realize I didn't even give you a suggestion in the PC thread. Apologies.

Corsair K70 is one I want personally. I currently own a coolermaster Quickfire Pro and I like it but I want the full backlight and the wrist rest.

NervousXtian

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
So I've had my Ducky Shine 3 (brown) for over a month now. Just an awesome keyboard... it makes my CM Quickfire Storm look like a toy in comparison.

Just so solid, functional, and perfect.

Got mine off Massdrop.. but there's not one going now for it.

Been using my daskeyboard ultimate 4 now for about a week. It's amaze. every click satisfying.

To truly appreciate it, you need to use it, then go back to any other keyboard.

all other keyboard switch types should be banned. Just a pleasure to type on and the noise is rad.

So does anyone on here know when the Corsair K70 RGB will be out in the UK?

Really need a new keyboard so don't know how long I can wait.

My Gigabyte Osmium board had become really unreliable awhile back. So I'd been looking at new boards for awhile. I considered the k70 RGB for some time, but some of the user reviews on Newegg mentioned they had malfunction problems. That was too similar to the problems with my Osmium, so it put me off that board.

Since I wanted something more likely to be reliable, I decided to go the minimalist route and started to look at tenkeyless, non-backlit boards. Smaller boards like the Poker II looked nice to me as well, but I use my dedicated arrow keys too much to get one of those. From what I researched on places like geekhack, it seemed like the best tenkeyless boards were Filcos or Cooler Master's QuickFire Rapid.

The Filco's were a bit too expensive on Amazon and I didn't really like the look of the QFR. Then I found a geekhack topic about a board that was released this year by Keyed Up Labs. It looked nice and had build quality comparable or possibly better than a Filco while being cheaper. So I ended up buying the Cherry red version of it from Amazon.

I've had it for a few days now and it's great! Key caps have a nice textured feel instead of the smooth plastic on the Osmium. The case's plastic feels solid as a brick. I use a keyboard tray, so it's nice to not have 1/3 of my mousepad taken up from the numpad sitting on it. It comes with a PS/2 adapter, so I've freed up a USB port and get full N-key rollover. There's no special driver to worry about installing, which is a plus. And it works in the BIOS, unlike the Osmium.

I do miss the dedicated volume wheel of my previous board, but I'm getting used to using Fn+F11/F12 and I have buttons on my G500 mouse set to control volume as well. I can touch type, so no backlighting isn't a huge loss. Geekhack mentioned how the larger keys have Cherry stabilizers, which make those keys feel "mushier" than the others when bottoming out. It was pretty noticable when I first started using the board, but now I barely feel it and don't think it's much of an issue for me.

Overall I think it's an awesome board and I think it'll last me a long time.

The Corsair software for controlling the RGB keyboard is god awful. It's so fucking buggy, that I just settled on a non-reactive color scheme for the time being, as fiddling around in there is absolutely frustrating.

Corsair again with a great piece of hardware, and absolute crap software. Seems to be their MO.

How loud are blue switches in reality? I get the feeling that a lot of what I hear about their noise level is overblown talk, but my parents room is directly next to mine and the walls aren't exactly thick. Would you guys recommend them in this situation?

I definitely want a mechanical keyboard with the tactile bump, so it's between these and the browns. I've narrowed the choice down to either the CM Quickfire TK (Blues) and CM Quickfire Ultimate (Browns) and they're both more or less the same price. The only differences beside that are the LED colour and that the Ultimate is full size.

Bonus question about the Ultimate for anyone who owns one in the UK, does it have that tacky branding on the space bar and above the arrow keys? I don't mind the CM logo in the top right but those other ones really bug me. They appear on the product images on Scan but in some YouTube reviews they aren't there.

Just recommended a mechanical keyboard to my father, as he is going to have to type a lot in his new assignment. I told him to get a blue one, because that's what I've read before in topics like these. Do you guys have any recommendation for a cherry blue keyboard that's not expensive or flashy? He's just going to type, no need for media center, etc. A backlight would help, I guess.

I've got a Cherry MX-Board 3.0 with the blue switches.
I love it, typing feels so good and you really know/hear when if you entered a command.
Personally, I like the click sounds. Friends of mine hate it, they say it would drive them crazy.

For gaming, of course you have to get used to it first, but that is no problem at all.

I can fully recommend it and I don't think you would hear the clicks through walls or closed doors, at least if you're not hammering on keyboard.

Not that loud. Not as loud as an old fashioned type writer going clickety clack. Louder than a membrane keyboard. You can reduce the noise by inserting rubber rings on each key, like this:

I'm on the lookout for a 10key less keyboard with cherry brown keys, I've currently got a k 70 with red keys, while not bad at all I'm really interested in trying browns. What would be a cheapish but good option? I'm open for ducky as long as it doesn't look overly tacky

Get a switch sampler if you want to just try it, IMO.

I picked up a CM Storm Quickfire a few weeks ago and love it. It's pretty easy to find for around $89.

I'm very ignorant to these type of keyboards. Do they only get purchased for the sound they make?
The feel and consistency. For the same reason that people love some laptop keyboards over others, people like these keyboards over basic membrane ones.

The noise is actually the downside to mech keyboards, so limiting that is a major consideration. That's why you see so much discussion on it.

Thank you for indulging in my ignorance.

I've used membrane keyboards(As far as I know) most of my life. I'll probably check a few out actually.

I highly recommend it. That keyboard I mentioned above was my first one, and now I will never go back to a membrane. Now that I've seen the light I'm trying to convert my friends and family now. I just bought my dad a daskeyboard (with blue switches) for his birthday.

Hah, I've been doing the same. Slowly converting all my friends and family, got my brother a Filco M2 for one of his birthdays. Loves it. =)

A few months ago I went mechanical and bought an illuminated Rosewill Apollo RK-9100xBBR with Cherry MX brown switches. I like it, but I've had some issues with it...

Since I installed the keyboard, whenever my PC goes to sleep, when I wake it either (A) the screen remain dark for a full ten seconds before the PC wakes up, or (B) the PC appears to wake up right away, but everything is frozen for about ten seconds before returning to normal. Either way I have a ten second delay on waking up, which was never a problem before.

Also, sometimes (but not all the time) when the PC goes to sleep, the keyboard remains illuminated. And sometimes (but not all the time) when I shut down the PC the keyboard remains illuminated and I have to tug the USB plug out from the back of the PC to turn it off.

And yes, I did download the latest driver from the Rosewill website. My PC has an i5 3570K CPU and an Asus P8Z77-V Pro motherboard, if that matters.

Anything I can try to fix this? I never had any problems like this with my old Saitek keyboard.
