Explain it to the judge. Maybe you will get lucky.

Good luck.

LMAO @ the "OMG you endangered us all".

Yes, the speeding was justified. It's your mother. I'd do the exact same
. Fuck the ticket. I'd go to court and fight it and explain the situation to a judge.

Moral absolutism goes out the window when it comes to your mother. Ideally wait for an ambulance but if there's not time you do what you have to for your family.

So if he'd hit someone and killed them would that be a justified thing too, or would you class that as manslaughter?

I understand why you were in a rush OP, but 75 in a 40mph zone is silly. You could've gotten yourself killed or someone else killed.

Dangerous behaviour aside, you were speeding because you considered getting there early was worth paying a fine, I suppose. So no reason to complain if you get caught, although you may still ask for indulgence apparently. Being pulled over probably made you lose all the time you spared while speeding though, so in the end it was definitely not a great idea.

Don't do the crime if you can't pay the fine. You're lucky all you got was a speeding ticket, 25 over the speed limit in a 40 zone should be an automatic back seat ride in a patrol car.

I literally have no idea if I'm racing the clock to see my mother alive for the last time.

But going 75 in a 40, you could have been the reason someone else's mother was seen for the last time.

I understand how worried you were, but you were driving really irresponsibly.

Has anybody else had a justified reason to speed, and once you went to the magistrate with your ticket, they threw out the case?

You didn't have a justified reason to speed.
I doubt they'll throw out the case. They make take sympathy on you and lessen the fine if they're in a good mood, but you were being reckless with the speed you were going.

If. Did he though? No. Given the situation...not sure this ranks that high over things I'd get outraged or absolutist about.

Depends on the road though. If darting through congested traffic w/ bends and turns yea...75 isn't a good look. But on a non-packed straight road 75 isn't the end of the world.

ENOUGH WITH THE AMBULANCE HE WAS GOING TO SEE HIS MOTHER NOT DRIVE HER TO THE HOSPITAL.

I hope that clears that up :).

For non-US gaffers: 120km/h in a 65 km/h zone

Anyways, would've done it as well. You family was pretty assholeish for not calling or texting you.

Probably not going to happen because in reality there was no reason for you to be driving that fast. Your mother wasn't in the car with you needing to be rushed to the hospital, so there's no real justification.

Even if the mother was in the car doesn't excuse you for speeding in the eyes of the law. They'll say to call 911.

OP, the ticket sucks, but if you really thought she was dying I don't blame you at all. I'd do the same. I wouldn't even bother fighting it, regardless if you think it's right or wrong. It's just not worth it. Just be gald your mother is ok.

I get why you were speeding, but it doesn't make you in the right -- there's speed limits for a reason, and you could endanger other people driving that fast, stressed out. Be happy you might just get a fine.

Isn't that fast enough (or a big enough difference) to end up in jail?

IDK about US laws, but in Ontario absolutely.

edit: For anyone not operating under imperial measurements, it was 120km/h in a 64km/h zone while under stress.

I can understand your motivation for wanting to speed. I think most people would want to do the same thing in your place. However, the fact is that people's parents die every day. If everyone did the same thing you did, it would make the roads extremely dangerous. This is just one of those cases where the needs of society trump the needs of the individual.

Generally yes. I'm guessing if he didn't explain he was in a rush to get to the hospital for his mom, that would have been the end result. Cop was being lenient because OP had a reasonable excuse for doing what he did. That being said, it doesn't mean you can get away without some sort of fine.

It was a 4 lane road, as straight as an arrow. With barely any traffic. I was distraught, but I wasn't completely irrational. There was 20 minutes of driving before that were I only went about 10 over. Just happened to be at the straightaway were I felt safe to speed up a bit more, there was a cop waiting.

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
A GOOD COP would actually escort you to the hospital (from experience). THIS IS FUCKING BULLSHIT. I'm so raging right now... story makes my blood boil :(

exactly-if you needed to rush-why not call an ambulance? they are trained to drive at high speeds-

Hello, 911? Can you send an ambulance to take me to the hospital that's 45 minutes away?

"What's the problem"

My mom is on the way to the hospital in another ambulance.

That's shitty but so is your attitude about how you think excessive speeding while emotionally compromised isn't dangerous.

Hang in there with the Mom situation and hope for the best, and grow the fuck up and pay your fine.

Just my opinion (and if you didn't want opinions, don't start a discussion on a forum.)

Yea, gonna go ahead and not be that upset at you. Just don't make it a habbit. Speeding happens. Don't let it happen often.

Id fight it in court and either get it reduced. Shit, I got a 500$ ticket for speeding. Shit hurt, lol.

I did 100mph and ran through red lights one time when my mom with an extremely low blood sugar got lost behind the wheel nearly 20 miles away from home. When you're hypo-glycemic you're essentially drunk, and with her insulin pump still connected, she could have had a seizure and died before I could have ever gotten to her. Thank god my cousins got there before I ever did. We didn't know exactly where she was, so I was just driving around my county frantically based on the limited info my mom was able to give me. I probably would never have been able to get to her in time.

Did I get caught? No.

Should I have gone to jail? Yes.

If you're able to, accept that you did the right thing given the situation, but don't expect the judge to give you any leeway.

Take the ticket with pride, you did the right/wrong thing.

I think youll find that many drivers who kill pedestrians say the same thing.

Yes, in some states that would be a reckless endangerment charge and hed be in the back of the cruiser.

If these pedestrians crossed where I was driving, they would have been breaking the law as well. There's no where safe to cross this street. I wasn't going to hit anyone. Maybe after work, I'll snap a pic of this road.

Had a friend get stabbed while at a bonfire on the beach. hewas drunk and somehow ended up talking shit to two dudes that were walking by on another part of the beach. The fucking idiot kicked sand at the dudes and they jumped him, smh my friend is a fucking retard. He was a wrestler so he had one in a lock supposedly and the other stabbed his abdomen in 6 different spots. The rest of my crew started running over when they heard the yelling but by the time we got there, the two dudes had bolted.

We grabbed him and threw him in the back of my other friend's car, all the while this idiot's saying that he could have had them and that it's not that bad. When you grabbed his side it was soft and fucking sank in, lots of blood. Hospital was like 15 minutes out of our way, but we made it in like 5 burning through lights. We actually caught a cop as we entered the hospital parking lot, I guess he saw us burn through the last light but he helped us carry our friend out of the car and into the ward then took a report. My friend still caught a fine for running a red though. Least he wasn't drinking or he probably could have caught a DUI too.

Joke post? Or what fantasy world do you live in where a cop will allow someone who is emotionally distressed to drive 35 mph over the speed limit in a 40mph zone?

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
Unlikely to get it dismissed, but may get it down a few notches.

#1 - As mentioned, read the OP again.

#2 - Something being understandable doesn't mean there are no consequences. If you're sitting alone at home with a suspended license (let's say you got it from going 70 in a 45) and you get a call like this, most people will hop in the car and rush out. That's understandable as a human, but you're still risking getting arrested for driving on a suspended license. You've decided the risk of punishment is worth it, and that's fine, but you can't whine too much if it happens.

Also speeding isn't safe but most people aren't going to randomly plow into something because they're going above the limit. But still, unsafe.

Whether or not you feel "safe to speed" is irrelevant. If it's safe to speed there, then why is the speed limit 40 instead of 75? You act like it's just an arbitrary number that no thought was put into.

You probably know this already, but a tip - when you go into court, don't do this whole justification thing you are doing on here, where you basically tell them that you get to decide what speed limit is safe for you. It will go badly.
