Concerned more that there are no reviews than no OT. Unless my google-fu fails me.

Civ5 was pretty shaky at the start and the expansions made it amazing.

What's the best deal available for this one. I see people saying GMG but then that voucher on the last wasn't too successful.

I didn't notice it at first but you need to select the VIP box on GMG, and it leads you to a page where you can buy Beyond Earth for $37.49.

Also, isn't the review embargo up tomorrow morning? Will have a decent amount of time before release to decide if on the fence.

The cover art looks so minimalist and gorgeous that I am gonna wait until release day and actually buy the physical box copy of this game. So excited! Only 2 days left!

I have not followed the development of this game at all.

Does anyone know if it's more like Alpha Centauri, or more a palette/setting swap for Civ 5? (which would be ok with me anyway)

Haven't played Alpha Centauri myself but everyone I've talked to who has says that Beyond Earth is more similar to Civ 5, minus the scifi setting of course.

From the little I've seen, it's more similar to Civ V. Big differences are in the tech tree, there's now an orbit layer to launch satellites to provide various bonuses to your civ, and the early game is more about survival in a hostile alien world. Honestly I haven't done an extensive amount of research about this game because I knew I was going to get it since I love Civ. :p

Damn no OT?

Nope, looks like it's still up for grabs.

I've been considering this as well. It really is an awesome box. The pic is a hexagon, it's fucking brilliant.

Bah, I totally missed that. There it is!

Just got it from gmg and apparently the vip discount allows the use of credit (from playfire or the store) so i got it for 23. good stuff.

Wait, so does the VIP price also stack with coupons? 'Cuz that'd be bananas.

Edit: Upon further research, VIP and coupons do not appear to stack. Sad bananas.

*swears he'll never pre-order a game again*

*pre-orders Civlization: Beyond Earth*

I wasn't all that hyped, but now that it's preloaded and just sitting there on my hard drive, waiting to be unlocked.. maximum hype is goooooooooooooooooooo

On the fence whether I should get this. I mean it's looking a lot like a reskinned Civ V.
I saw a few people who played 150-250 rounds and they all stated, that this was not the case. I don't know if 2k is a company that forces people to say that, but it seems good to me. So far I saw stuff that was a lot different.

- creating a own civilization with a few choices in the beginning instead of just choosing one
- a techweb that makes it virtually impossible to acquire every tech and forces you to choose, you don't have any tech sooner or later like in previous CIV games
- aliens are not barbarians. This things evolve with you and will be a threat from the beginning to the very end.
- in single player the other players arrive later than you after a few rounds, so not all colonists are magically there at the same time, although people who arrive later have greater tech. And since they come from outer space, you could suddenly be in the midst of advanced enemies or allies.

And that's just what I grasped from a few videos.

There's also an interesting terrain change in CivBE: there are hexes that damage units unless you get a tech to remove it, or harmonize with it and avoid the problem entirely. It will drastically change the way the different affinities play.

Corralling and managing aliens, or maintaining outposts (randomized city-states) will further differentiate CivBE and Civ5. It makes me wonder how the different affinities will deal with them... Very interesting, indeed.

That's the Xeno Titan, Harmony's ultimate melee unit. You can see it in the background of the Harmony army. :)

That's a good observation. I'm sad to have missed it.

Drop a xeno on it.

Just keep in mind that Firaxis has a rule of thumb when designing a new game, it's content should be:

33% Old
33% Improvements of old
33% New stuff

If you look at Civ: BE, it follows that pretty well. There are a number of systems that are old (one unit per tile, workers building improvements), some that have been improved (espionage, cultural perks), and some that are new (orbital layer, affinity system, quests).

Of course this means that some stuff got left out, there are no great people, no religion, and no tourism system, for example.

(The above is not meant to be an exhaustive list of changes, by the way.)

I think CivBE is the first Firaxis game to have two lead designers; it will be interesting to see how that affects the cohesion of the various gameplay mechanics, not to mention the game as a whole.

It would be GREAT if someone could post exactly how this is possible in North America. None of the codes I've tried are working.

Log into GMG and click the VIP link up top. You can then preorder the game for $37 without a code (and you are free to use your GMG credit).

Guessing you can't use the 20% on top of this, oh well, I might bite at this price.

edit: Oh, missed where you said "without a code".
