Point n Click Adventure GAF 2014 No longer in our dreams, memories or just Germany.

Quick question about The Book of Unwritten Tales, since I assume some of you have played it. I'm at the part where
you need to find all the ingredients to create the power potion, and I'm only missing the, um, "asthmatic trans fat maggots." Can't seem to find that anywhere. The thing is that there is something that very much looks like maggots in the sewers entrance, but I can't interact with it anymore. I examined it before I needed maggots and Wilbur was grossed out, but the game just doesn't let you examine stuff again once you've heard everything he has to say about it. So long story short, I just want to know if the solution is indeed related to those maggots and my game is being buggy (stuck with no clue in an adventure game? must be a bug!), or if it's somewhere else and I just suck. :) Don't give me the actual solution in the latter case, I'll keep searching if there is something else to find (that's also why I'm not just looking at a walkthrough)
.

EDIT: Yeah, no bug. It was just some pixel-hunting bullshit. Lots of that in this game. -_-

Gonna try and get Dreamfall Chapters from Russia. One trader is offering it for $12-13, but alas...I got no keys T.T

Has anyone gotten theirs hands on a physical copy of The Walking Dead S1 for PS4 yet? A store clerk told me the game was delayed a week so I guess I'll try again tuesday.

(believe it or not, I still haven't played through this game)

Playing Gabriel Knight. It's basically the same game it always was, although now with boring 3D graphics.

Every time a new day starts, and Grace stands with her feet falling through the steps at the bookshop entrance before magically levitating as she picks up the newspaper, I sigh a little.

Every time I click to fast-forward the dialogue and it either doesn't skip, or the voice acting stops but the mouth flaps continue until the speech would have finished, I sigh a little (this was an issue in Moebius as well, I wish they'd fix this in their game engine).

Every time I think that this is supposed to be designed to get new people into the genre, despite being so mediocre technically, I sigh a little.

Ah well. That's all my Kickstarter-ed stuff from Pinkerton Road done now; and hey, at least Gabriel Knight isn't actively rubbish like Moebius was.

I wish you weren't absolutely right.

Aaaaand Gabriel Knight finished.

At least it was impossible to get into a dead end state (my least favourite thing about Sierra games).

Otherwise, I can't remember what the additions are beyond the obvious (silly hidden object-esque scenes and that panel swapping puzzle in Schloss Ritter - oh, and that god awful Ask the Loa thing). Admittedly the new motion comics are excellent; easily the best thing about this remake.

I'd still recommend the original over it.

I don't think it was possible to dead end yourself in the original version.
There were a few death scenes, true, but that's all I remember.

^ he's probably talking about the quest games..

I managed to dead end myself right at the very end of the game; there was something I hadn't picked up before the drums started playing for the sacrifice, I'm sure. Been a while, though, and I haven't got the inclination to replay to try and get myself into that situation again today.

I remember a game that it still didn't appear in digital stores. The game is Nightlong: Union City Conspiracy. Such an awesome game with a blade runner feel...Team 17, please, re-release it digitally!

Hmm...while my initial impressions of A Golden Wake were quite good, overall found it to be quite a disappointing game. Finished it in around 4 hours...I don't know, just didn't really work for me.

Definitely agree with all your points, BluWacky.

First impressions of Dreamfall Chapters:

The game opens with a short video which isn't even close to the brilliant opening for Dreamfall. ..but it looks like it was put there so brand new players aren't completely lost. Once the real game begins, it's really fucking good. I'm impressed by the production values. Lovely imagery and music. It's great to be back.

Nitpicks:

Zoe has a different voice actor :(
Someone really needs to increase look sensitivity for mouse and keyboard. I'm sticking with a controller for now.

Cool, thanks for the post. I'm a little rusty on Dreamfall/TLJ lore myself...perhaps the intro movie would be a good recap for those like myself :)

Does it seem like the game expects players to be well-versed in TLJ/Dreamfall lore, characters, etc. in your playthrough so far?

Cheers.

It's a direct continuation. It gives reminders of what happened in dialogue but it doesn't go into much detail. You should probably replay the first game if you forgot a lot of it.

edit: There's an option for a story recap in the main menu but it's grayed out. I assume it'll be live when the game launches so you might be OK.

edit2: I played a bit into the third chapter. Game is incredible. Buy it.

I assume by "first game" you mean TLJ? I've played both, but beat them when they came out, so any details/nuances are definitely hazy or forgotten.

Chapters references both games but there are more direct references to Dreamfall. So I guess "first game" meant "first Dreamfall".

Just finished Oknytt, a fantastic adventure based on Swedish folklore. Puzzles are mostly inventory-based but there's a neat incorporation of elemental runes used to manipulate environments. Beautiful art and atmosphere, too.

PC Gamer released a list of their top 25 adventure games.

Mostly what you'd expect, with the top 10 being almost all LucasArts games. ;)
Gone Home? To the Moon? Ehhh. Would put something like Gemini Rue in long before either of those.

Also, Fate of Atlantis nowhere to be found on there. Damn.

Oknytt ended up being my favorite adventure game of last year and possibly my personal game of the year for 2013. I loved everything about it.

Pretty awful list to me personally .

No Monkey Island 2, Curse of Monkey Island, Indy & the Fate of Atlantis, Ben There Dan That, Time Gentleman Please, Simon the Sorcerer.

Monkey Island is way too high (this is supposedly a "best" list, not a "most influential"), as are full throttle and grim fandango.

I don't mind most of the above because personal opinions and so forth, but for Monkey Island the author writes "The sequel is arguably both the better and funnier game" - don't think that's really arguable at all. Leaving aside which is funnier, MI2 is just built better. Unless when replaying the author stopped at the end of act one and never relived the boredom of traipsing around Monkey Island itself.

Number one is a good pick though. I might go with FATE over DOTT but it's always a tough call.

Pretty bad list, but less so than I expected, to be honest. There are a few gems that aren't mentioned often (Discworld Noir and TLJ) in these lists, and that's a point of merit.

Eh... no. The Secret of Monkey Island should have been first. It is the best P&C adventure ever, for a lot of reasons.

(and curse is not Monkey Island and it's terrible)

Damn, I didn't notice Fate of Atlantis' absence. Another great one.
Oh boy. I'm speechless.
Probably they didn't want to do a list of Lucasfilm Games' adventures only. It's missing Zak too.

Anyhoo... I'm pretty sure I played Toonstruck ages ago and I do not remember *anything* about that. Zero. Was it good?

Ah, a list! Whereby I remind myself that despite having played zillions of adventure games I've still never played Last Express, or The Walking Dead, or Full Throttle, or any of the Tex Murphy games, or...

Including Discworld Noir when it's unpurchasable and unplayable on modern computers is cruel!

Day of the Tentacle is undoubtedly my favourite adventure game of all time, though. Sam and Max has never really clicked with me, but DOTT's sense of humour was totally up my street.

Played A Golden Wake.
The game starts not so good, the story is pretty dull, the puzzles are weak and way too easy and the main character is extremely unlikable at first (the top of this being
the inspection to convince the guy to sell his house scene
, it's something that really disgusted me). It's just... not that fun to be a real estateagent.
Then after a while it picks up. Sure, the puzzles all remain way too easy but the "seller intuition" is a pretty nice mechanic that sadly doesn't get used as much as it should have. The years-spanning story becomes quite interesting and you get to care for the characters and what becomes of them. Especially considering that most of them are historical figures and the plot is based on real facts. And this is the game's strong side: it's historically interesting (every now and then I went to google things I saw in the game) with a great and underused setting. And the music is pretty good.
So... in the end, I had fun and learned something too. Definitely a good adventure, but could have been so much more and it's not on par with the other Wadjet games.

Anyone else finished The Silent Age on iOS?
I finished Ep. 2 a few days ago and IMO, enjoyed it. Its a simple PnC game that's only long because of the use of touch controls, but I liked the story, setting and simplistic graphics.
First time play through is maybe 5ish hours or less.

What are the reasons that make it the best? I put MI2, FATE and DOTT above it for sure, possibly others.

I agree that curse is not MI, but it is not terrible. It's a well written game with good puzzles.

I DON'T APPRECIATE THE NOT-ENTIRELY-REVERENT GRIM FANDANGO REMARK A FEW POSTS AGO, BTW
Best game. Not overrated.

Those puzzles though

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Are great and some of the best of the genre. GF is remarkable for making puzzle chains that are gradually more and more complex.

I did a replay when Tobias Pfaff's mouse mod(which is awesome) came out a few months ago, and I found them easy and basic myself. And I remembered practically nothing, I hadn't played it in a long time, because of the emulation problems. The story still stands up and is one of the finest in the genre. The puzzles do not and are not imo

The Secret Files franchise pack and the individual games are on sale this weekend for 75% off, as is Lost Horizon by the same developers. I haven't played any of these, how are they?

I really enjoyed the first one. It's a pretty basic adventure game with the typical kinds of puzzles you'd find but I thought the story and characters were interesting. I really liked exploring the environments as well.

The second game is mostly more of the same but the voice actor for the main character is different which I did not like. Other than that, not a bad game.

The third game was a disappointment for me. Short and easy with almost no challenge. Story and characters were ok, I suppose.

Then there's that Sam Peters side game. I liked it much more than the third game and it felt more like a proper sequel. Characters and story aren't quite as good but still enjoyable.

Overall, I've liked the series quite a bit and the first game is one of my favorite adventure games from the past ten years.

I think I talked about it in the past, don't want to be pedantic so I'll summarize.
Amazing story with great twists and ideas. It's your classic "princess in distress" theme, except the princess isn't really the classic archetype, and she's way more resorceful than prince charming himself. She didn't need to be saved, she had everything under control until the main character came to attempt the saving.
Main character that also subtly manage to fail every single achievement in the story. Everything he does, is for nothing:
Act 1: he manages to do the three trials... just to see the pirates disappear.
Act 2: He manages to get to Monkey Island, but only by dumb luck and a mistakenly interpreted recipe.
Act 3: He gets to LeChuck's boat, just to see him sail off.
Act 4: He gets to the church before the marriage, but he wasn't needed.
This is extremely good writing here. And speaking of the writing, every single dialogue in the game it's always interesting and adds to the story, doesn't unnecessarily drag and it's genuinely fun and absolutely brilliant, like the supporting characters are. Stan, Carla, LeChuck and his aide, Herman, the talking head, the cannibals... every one of them is memorable. Even the little monkey had a lot of personality.
Excellent puzzles from the beginning to the end, and it introduced the idea that you shouldn't permanently die (although you can, as an easter egg) or get stuck because you didn't pick up an object on previous acts.
The art direction is absolutely amazing and extremely evocative, the digital artists made a miracle and it's still beautiful to see after 20 years.
And the music... do I really need to go into details on how amazing it is? I think it's self explanatory:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjvD3C_nvBk
Still my favourite game soundtrack ever.
All of its developers were in a state of grace, it's just too perfect.

I agree that curse is not MI, but it is not terrible. It's a well written game with good puzzles.
I may be a little biased here. Got back from the store with an insane anticipation for another Monkey Island just to discover that it wasn't a Monkey Island game, but a stupid dumbed down cartoon with atrocious art direction, awful supporting chracters (except the ones from the previous chapters) and a terrible story which didn't catch the theme of the orignal not even a bit. I was pretty bummed and hated the game since then.
So... it may have been a decent P&C game, if it hadn't been called Monkey Island.

I love Monkey Island 1, 2 and 3. I'd love to have seen Gilbert's MI3 but that ship has sailed. Curse is still brilliant even if it gets away from the darker undertones of the earlier games.

All of its developers were in a state of grace, it's just too perfect.

Good point about the characters, I do remember them more then the MI2 ones, or the FATE ones(though there the indy-sophia teaming makes up for it there). I still personally think DOTT trumps or equals it on all scores though(apart from being first to do "no death" of course, but it had its own innovative mechanics with the chronojohn).

Now Grossman no longer works at TTG, I do wish he would make something with Gilbert & Schafer again.

So... it may have been a decent P&C game, if it hadn't been called Monkey Island.

I know what you mean, it does require me to separate it in my mind from the earlier games. If you can do that you may find it enjoyable. There's some great thinking behind some of the puzzles, and it looks lovely for what it is. The VA is great to, especially Dominic Armato. Did feel rather gross when they added it to 1 & 2 though, those games were never designed to have voice(and it shows in the reading of the deadpan comments), and Armato doesn't work as MI1/2 Guybrush.

So in A Golden Wake...
I just killed by the old bakery lady.
It was hilarious

Yeah, that was pretty funny.

I did actually look for a while to see if there was a way to
"beat" her
, but I couldn't find anything so I just ended up
running away
.

It is refreshing to have a game give you different routes, though I later noted it seems there's only ever persuasion or puzzle, never puzzle1 or puzzle2.
