NPD Sales Results for October 2014 [Up3: All of Nintendo's 3DS million sellers]

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
The Ds was the most powerful handheld when it launched bar none, and it destroyed the competition. Therefore by Phoenician logic it was the most powerful handheld of that generation.
PS2 was the most powerful for 'long enough', it can be argued pretty easily. It launched a whole year before the competition. DS launched what, a month before Vita?

Sure thing boss. Probably Xbox One will sell more, but yeah, 1-2 months out of 12 isn't something you should be celebrating. Unless they sell like several hundreds of thousands more than the PS4, but that is unlikely.

Evil Within only behind NBA 2K and Smash?

Impressive.

PS2's main selling point was that it was a DVD-player as well as the successor to the PS1 which everybody loved.
People keep saying this, but none of my PS2-owning friends even knew it played DVDs until I asked one of them why he was thinking about buying a DVD player when he already had a PS2.

The DS launched November 21, 2004
The PSP launched December 12, 2004
The 3DS launched February 26, 2011
The PSVita launched December 17, 2011

DS launched a month before PSP
3DS launched 9 months before Vita

Jesus if you want to engage in those semantics (instead of the real discussion) then use the 3ds vs the vita. 8 or 9 months from one to the other. Close enough to fit the same moving goalposts that are attempted to be put in place.

I'm fear this might be Sony's last month on top.
November will be the waterloo of PS4. First MS reclaim US, then Sony lost UK, the stepping stone into EU, with power of China, MS finally crack PS4 last resort Japan & Asia.

PSP

If that doesn't work break out 3DS. Launched a long time before Vita. Ran away with a dwindling market. Was the most powerful handheld on the market at the time. That doesn't make it the most powerful handheld of its generation.

If Phoeny wanted to argue that people bought PS2 for it's technical capability that's perfectly cool. MGS2 made PS2 look in an entirely different generation from anything on the DC, but it was still one of the weakest systems of its generation. To argue otherwise is disingenuous at best.

Uninformed? I think they know exactly what they want.
Sure, but maybe it's only what marketing tells them they want. These lists are generally a pretty compelling argument that big marketing leads to higher sales than quality. Now whether they would actually appreciate quality without someone telling them is very much in the air.

As a market leader, I want the PS4 to be 12/12.

I'm a bit cheesed that Sony have done everything in their power to make sure that doesn't happen.

Be perfect or go home, Sony -_-

Based on what? A remaster collection?

When it comes to single player high profile games, it's not that big of a surprise that The EvilWithin (October 14) did well. It was well advertised, probably gave lots of people TLOU vibes and its main competition Shadow of Mordor (October 3) and Alien (October 7) was kinda weak in that people are probably sceptic when it comes to LOTR and Alien games.

People can't tell this is a joke?
I've never heard "waterloo" used seriously....about video games. And MS getting Japan? C'mon guys.
No one gets Japan

Lol better scoring exclusives??

Like the general public care about that? They want the most popular product and what their friends are playing on. It is the PS4

That's pushing it, let's not get crazy now.

WW is a loss for MS.

NA is where they can win if they continue to play their cards tight.

You guys keep saying this every couple of months and yet....

Nah, this is probably a first for me.

I'm usually rooting for Sony.

Unfortunately, November is stacked against the PS4.

These factors add up though and the gap in NA isn't large enough for their to be a snowball effect involving friends and etc in favour of the PS4.

Yet those better scoring exclusives are no where to be found in the charts.

It's NPD thread. The trolls, jokes and delusions are all so close that it's actually difficult at times.

So Microsoft doesn't have more marketing power now? Why hasn't theirs been working?

Based on what? A remaster collection?

You mean a remaster collection that doesn't even work. I have a PS4 and a ONE and I'm still buying all my multi-plats on PS4. That isn't going to change anytime soon. PS4 will stay on top this entire generation unless MS can figure out a way to reach parity without lowering the bar. I love FH 2 and SO but they're gonna need more than those, a remaster that shit the bed and a price cut to sway popular opinion. People look at the PS4 the same way they looked at the 360 last gen. It's the best place to game, period, that's just the way it is. MS may be reacting quicker then Sony but PS4 still has the best looking and playing multi-plats available, and that's what hardcore gamers care about, getting the best experience possible.

Also, where the fuck is Alien: Isolation on that list? I also didn't buy it though and I buy everything so I guess I answered my own question. It's bargain bin material.

I'm curious as to what the internal prediction sales #'s were for Sunset Overdrive were. Haven't had a chance to finish playing through the entire game, but I'm having fun from what I've done so far.

Great for Smash and Evil within! Does the OP statement for TEW means that it sold more than Resident evil first months? :\

People keep saying this, but none of my PS2-owning friends even knew it played DVDs until I asked one of them why he was thinking about buying a DVD player when he already had a PS2.

I know, it's like some retroactive invention that keeps getting repeated and has become part of the perceived wisdom. The only thing I can vaguely remember that might explain it is some articles about how it helped get DVD players into Japanese homes, but it was games that drove the PS2. It had to compete with the Dreamcast out of the gate, as well as the other future consoles.

I'm having fun too but I I'm also not feeling too bad about thinking of trading it in for a cool $44 bucks @ BB in order to pick up Dragon Age on the cheap next week. That doesn't speak too well of its longevity this holiday season.

We tried to figure that out, but it sold around 400K, which is less than Resident Evil 5 and 6. My best guess is they meant as a new IP, so more than Resi 1, Silent Hill 1, Deadspace 1, ect. Take with gain of salt please^^

Hopefully the lesson learned here is that when you get offered leaked info you don't actually argue with the leaker about your own conditions for receiving the info.

Imagine how the Watergate Scandal would have played out if the Journos had turned down the leaked information because their informant wouldn't meet them during the day in a nice coffee shop at a time of their convenience.

I remain dissaointed in U.S. support for risky titles like Alien Isolation. You all have bland taste now get out there and buy it!

The only "exclusive" (if we use the term fast and loose) that has made a difference this generation is Titanfall. And that was only an exclusive because it was pretty much bought and paid for by Microsoft. It's debatable if Microsoft made any money from the deal factoring in the losses.

It will be interesting to see if Sony or Microsoft can produce something first party that actually definies the generation like Minecraft, or something.

But so far it's third party that's selling consoles.

Maybe they played Colonial Marines.

Or watched Prometheus.

The "brand" has been diluted since that damn James Cameron popcorn sequel. Alien could've been remembered as on of the best horror films of all time, not something that spawns crossover comics for tweens.

Happy for Mikami and the whole Tango Gameworks team. Evil Within was a good start for the company and they are rewarded with a great third place. Hopefully we see another survival horror game from this studio and Mikami doesn't turn it's back on the genre again for the next 10 years.

In the film community it is viewed as one of the best horror films ever made. Game community needs to sort itself out.

EDIT: I blame Fox and Gearbox respectively for mishandling the franchise myself. From interviews the main creative forces behind it had no desire to continue past Aliens and from the point the franchise was shaped by commercial rather than creative forces for the most part. The shame is Alien Idolation is clearly s game shaped primarily by creative forces. It does what's right for the title and almost gleefully ignores commercial design which I love which is why I'm genuinely saddened to see a region fail to support it as well as they could have although it may be a case of the action orientated TEW took more of the available market.

It wouldn't be much of a surprise; the first RE was a sleeper hit.

Oh, I see: as first episode.
Well, still great! I'm liking the game (not loving it), so a (more polished?) sequel would be welcomed!
