RUMOR: New EAD Team Led By Koichi Hayashida

Good, as long as this hack doesn't get to touch Mario games anymore. Galaxy 2 already was nothing but an inferior map pack, not even in the same league as the first, but with 3D World the series has now fully become soulless, integrating itself completely into the phoned-in NSMB series.
I'd also love to see Koizumi return to Zelda.

Why waste money? They're making games for Nintendo anyway

Exactly. Nintendos growth is very conservative. They don't want to buy a western developer invest in it, then suffer from the typical musical chairs developers play with their career. Form a partnership, with the ability to walk away from them should things go south.

Note how this rumor is entirely based on that German site reading the credits and speculating about Koizumi's absence with Hayashida taking top billing. This really isn't a "rumor" but simple speculation from the site. Of course it's valid but don't go around telling people this is credible info until we have something more concrete.

So then would that mean that another EAD game is in development that we don't know about?

EAD3-Captain Toad

EAD2-Splatoon

EAD1-???

Or are they the ones doing the Mario Kart DLC right now?

You're completely messing up the structure. This is about EAD Tokyo. Hayashida would be EAD Tokyo 3.

Splatoon is EAD Kyoto Group 2. The Kyoto EAD is the original, their location suffix is usually dropped because of that. EAD Kyoto is where all the Zeldas, Animal Crossings, NintendoLands, Wii-series, 2D Marios, Splatoons happen. EAD Tokyo is where 3D Mario lives along with tiny projects (NES Remix, Flipnote, also DK Jungle Beat).

That would mean Koizumi isn't directing the new Zelda. :(

Koizumi isn't directing anything these days. Of course he's not direct a Zelda game made in Kyoto all of a sudden.

Hang on EAD Tokyo are just 3D Mario?

One team Wii U (Galaxy 3), One Team 3DS (3D Land 2 / Sunshine 2) and new team for next Nintendo platform (Open world Mario / 64-2)?

GALAXY 3 INCOMING? OR OPEN WORLD MARIO?

Probably Mario Galaxy 2 based on Miyamoto's statement about wanting to do a third one.

From Iwata Asks interview in November 2013:

Miyamoto: Just so there is no misunderstanding, I should point out that this doesn’t mean we’ll never make another Super Mario Galaxy game. The same team [ at the time was developing Super Mario 3D World] can’t make both at the same time. And we can’t bring in a second party and slap the name Super Mario Galaxy on it. I suppose we could idealistically make both in [EAD] Tokyo, but we want to do something new too, so there was that dilemma.
It sounds like that new project was probably Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker since the team apparently decided to do it fairly early on. However, as it has been said before, EAD Tokyo later confirmed a new Mario game is in the works back in April 2014, but did not specify what platform it would be for. Miyamoto also said that he would not expect to have time to be involved in this new Mario game due to his commitment to other projects.

I have no clue what the Mario fandom is like but I thought everyone loved SMG2...

Miyamoto brought up two different examples of this during our discussion. He mentioned that he's been working with Yoshiaki Koizumi, one of the lead developers at Nintendo's EAD Tokyo studio and producer of Super Mario 3D Land and 3D World, "on what we can do to allow the Tokyo studio to create more games." Miyamoto noted that Nintendo had already started to "gradually" increase that studio's team over time. "We're doing this not by going out of house to different companies and having them develop games for us, but instead by working with partner companies and subsidiaries in a way that allows the Tokyo studio to run more projects," Miyamoto said..

Right. Basically this has been Miyamoto's strategy for his EAD division.

1. Unreleased Prototypes (Steel Diver) / Masterpiece Classics (Majora's Mask 3D) - EAD and partner studio develop the product jointly. Miyamoto actually almost confirmed he wants to do this for a Mario Galaxy HD Collection.

2. GARAGE Project

3. While most EAD games begin with a core team of 6-8 people. Miyamoto's strategy is for support studios (1-UP, Monolith Kyoto), and external partners (Indies Zero, Spooky Graphics) to fill out the larger 100+ man production teams that HD games need during the full production stages. EAD develops the technology, designs the level layouts, but they don't have a million graphic artists to model pots and pans for 8 HD games at a time. No developer does actually.

Didn't we recently see Miyamoto hanging out in the new Nintendo building from that amazing EDGE interview? A new EAD seems pretty likely (and fantastic). I hate to be that guy who begs for sequels, but Mario Galaxy 3 would be insane.

The new building is in Kyoto. This thread is about EAD Tokyo expanding (possibly).

Do you have a link on hand ? Not that I´m doubting you, but I´d love to see the wording for myself.

During a recent group interview about the plumber’s latest adventure, Super Mario 3D World (out Nov. 22 for Wii U), Miyamoto told members of the press via translator that we could see HD versions of games like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Sunshine.

“As for remaking previous games in HD, that’s certainly possible,” Miyamoto said. “But currently, most of our devs are working on making new stuff. And we certainly like to have people working on new stuff like that. HD remakes might, however, be a good project for a development partner of ours. So that’s something I hope we have the opportunity to introduce in the future.”

I would love to see Nintendo be able to fill in the gaps with more parnterd studios and their expanded studios. Third parties really aren't present anyway. Having second party and expanded first party teams would keep them with full schedules at least.

I don't think Nintendo will have any need to buy either one of those studios for the same reason they don't buy other third party developers such as Camelot (whose known for handling Mario Tennis, Mario Golf and Golden Sun) - both have long-term planned relationships with Nintendo for publishing projects via contract deals. This way, they rarely have to resort to working on rushed licensed IP projects to stay afloat.

Here's what Next Level Games said about its relationship with Nintendo back in June 2013:

Anything that helps with the output is good enough in my books.

Awesome. Nintendo produces amazing games, but they don't arrive with enough frequency to single-handedly keep a console afloat. More teams the better.

Wait, so this means that Captain Toad's Magical Adventures was done by a separate team, while the main Mario team started work on the next Mario already? Anger subsiding...

Still, while I'm sure Captain Toad will be a decent game, a studio as talented as EAD Tokyo should be working on grounding breaking, system sellers, not quirky little experimental titles.

I'll just say this.

I agree with you on NSMB. The music and art of the first was soulless compared to previous 2D Marios, and the sequels pretty much just rehashed that.

But SMG2 > SMG1, and SM3DW was awesome.

Which one of your personalities am I speaking to right now? Those two sentences seem completely at odds with each other.

If only they could commission some of the MK8 team to work on F-Zero U. But at this point, I think we would all gladly settle for an F-Zero GX HD.
The real question is whether or not GX's gameplay can be made to work with online multiplayer without slowing it down or faking it too much.
