So,i just saw the Ghost In The Shell MMO trailer, and i got really interest in the anime, mostly because it was font of inspiration for the Matrix movie. But,after going looking for more of it,i just perceived i never saw any anime, being some episodes of One Piece and Bleach the most i ever saw. So,guys, recommend me great animes,i'm open to any recommendation.

If you liked thr matrix then you should watch Megazone 23.

What are you trying to do, scar OP for life?

I always feel like 90% of threads like these are people posting names without any description, pictures or recommendation reasoning whatsoever, and how that probably doesn't help the op in the slightest.

Thanks guys, some really great recommendations here ! Probably i'll start with Ghost in the Shell/Cowboy Beebop.Just some questions : there are any of these series that the manga is better ? And i should watch the FMA or FMA Brotherhood ?

What? Harem anime are so awesome and funny. It's sooo enjoyable.

Unless you have an interesting lead character, it's usually irritating to watch.

Especially with the indecisive, allergic-to-boob main characters.

Actually, The World God Only Knows is the only worth watching, thanks to its brilliant lead.

I'm tossing in another vote for watching Hajime no Ippo. It's truly the epitome of the sport anime genre, hell the entire medium even. That first season was some god-tier stuff.

There are some well-made and funny harem shows (Haganai, Is this a Zombie?, Seitokai no Ichizon, Nisekoi come to mind) but they seem few and far between all the bland harem shows of which there are plenty of..... A huge chunk of that genre comes down to the MC having half a personality. Harems are a guilty pleasure of mine to watch sometimes but I don't how much I would recommend them to a newcomer.

Monster is amazing, although not a particularly stunning example for anime itself, or rather it might not be the best one to watch first. I guess the only reason why it's a manga/anime is because ,,lol Japan'', since in reality it might as well be an ,,ordinary'' crime series. There's actually no need for it to be a cartoon (what happened to the HBO adaption anyway?). Should definitely be watched later on though.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica. I don't care about magical girl se4ies, but that one is actually legit. It also negates any reason to watch any other magical girl series. That's how awesome it is.

A quote from GraveHorizon the day I made him start watching Madoka "Phh, this Moe shit."

I recently decided to dabble in anime as a newcomer myself. As someone who likes thrillers and mysteries after a bit of searching around Death Note seemed like the best jumping-off point. It might be a cliché recommendation and many people seem to think it's overrated, but even if that might be the case it was a great watch. Good english dub (although I don't mind Japanese VA at all), nice episode length, just two seasons, self-contained story and no anime 'knowledge/experience' required at all to enjoy.

Don't bother with the second season though if you didn't like the first. As mindblowingly fantastic as the concept is exectued in the first half of the show (seriously, some of that stuff was brilliant, absolutely loved it as a fan of clever twists and turns) they kinda run out of interesting things to do with it which results in a disappointing, slow-paced new story arc for the second half. Still decent, but nowhere near as great as the tense and exciting episodes from season one. They also introduce some new characters later on that are just kinda meh while everyone from the first season is bloody fantastic.

Full Metal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop, Stein's Gate, and Death Note are good starters. Then once you want to try some of the heavier stuff go for Kara no Kyoukai in the release order of the films, not the "chronological" order that many people insist the whole thing should be watched as. It is raw japanese art that will mindfuck you.

When I started watching anime, I watched Trigun and Cowboy Beebop. It might be nostalgia but Trigun is still my favorite anime. It's a western set in the future. I just love the main character, Vash.

I prefer Samurai Chanploo to Cowboy Beebop.

If you watch Full Metal Alchemist, make sure you watch the original not the more recent one that followed the manga's story. The original is far superior imho.

These 15 would be a great start, read the manga 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind' instead.

I haven't seen a lot of Anime but I really liked Death Note. Before that, I didn't know I could like anime. It has a good story, good music, interesting characters, and it's real short so it doesn't take long to finish it.

Almost every anime that's an adaption of a manga is worse than the manga. Anime is usually used as a way for companies to advertise toys, light novels, games, or manga series. Because of this they usually only adapt a part of the source material, so you get botched endings, filler, and divergences from the original story. Usually only safe and well selling manga and light novels are used for adaptions too. This combined with the production costs of creating an anime compared to a manga means you get a lot of homogeneous crap. I'm not trying to say anime in general is bad, you get some good adaptions or original shows every now and then.

i love hyouka but when you call it "mundane mysteries" you should emphasize mundane big time. one episode is literally the mystery of who locked the door in a classroom while i was hanging out in there?

it was the janitor

Watch Space Brothers OP. Greatest slice-of-life anime ever.

Dragon Ball Z
Naruto
One Piece
Yu Yu Hakusho
Bleach
Tokyo Ghoul
Attack on Titan
Soul Eater
Gurren Laggan
G Gundam

Cant go wrong with any of these

I never got into series really (aside from Eva and Escaflowne), so my picks will be movies. Hopefully some of these are new to the pile of recommends.

Wings of Honneamise
1987

An alternate history earth (or other planet entirely can't remember) that's undergoing its space race to put the first man into orbit. Incredibly detailed world design catered to the culture's architecture, fashion, religion, and customs. Funny, somewhat of a tearjerker, and poignant without seeming preachy. The ending is one of the most memorable I've seen from an anime, heck, a film.

Pom Poko
1994

Directed by Isao Takahata, director of Grave of the Fireflies, yet a drastically different tone than the former. It's extremely light hearted and wears its goofiness on its sleeve, so if the idea of Tanukis that shapeshift using their ballsacks sounds too absurd for your enjoyment then you may want to move along. It's one of my favorite Ghibli films, a lot of that due to the lazy afternoon pacing. The transformation sequences are animated wonderfully, and have a kind of magical realism to them I haven't seen conveyed as well in most other animated films (perhaps only rivaled by Ponyo). This really is a wonderful film OP and I'd highly recommend it.

Angel's Egg
1985

This is more of an abstract piece, a little over an hour, but a really unique experience for anime imo. Minimalist dialog, most of it is pure imagery with an atmospheric soundtrack. Certainly something that opens up your imagination a bit and lets you fill in the blanks for the main character's backstory, what has happened to the world she is in etc. One of my favorites due to just how unique the overall feeling and tone is.

Cat Soup
2001

A half hour short that's about as weird as they come, but if you're open to the more surreal stuff you may dig this. Some really unique imagery here, but definitely not a standard narrative.

Paprika
2006

In my top five easily, it's psychadelic, mind bending, and has some of the best cel animation I've seen. All about dreams, technology, and the crazy shit that can happen when you mix the two together. Unforgettable, just watch it.

From the New World / Shin Sekai Yori

A post-apocalyptic sci-fi series that deals with the malleable and manipulatable nature of the human mind. True speculative fiction in the sense that the story examines the natural consequences of humans gaining psychic powers. Despite some stumbles, Masashi Ishihama gives the series a sense of palpable, brooding horror and unease.

This.
Its not perfect, but damn, the world it builds grabs you and doesn't let go.

If you enjoy space, dandies, and great music, you can't go wrong with Space Dandy. It has some guest anime directors, featuring some beautiful episodes too.

Watch Vision of Escaflowne, gorgeous art style, great story, AMAZING music, it's got romance as well as action and medieval mechs so you're covered no matter what you're into. It's also only 26 episodes so it doesn't outstay it's welcome. Still one of my faves:

I second this. It's not my favorite by any means, but it is a great starter series.

Planetes. It's about a bunch of people that work to clear the debris around Earth orbit. Such a wonderfully human story. It's not your typical crazy anime, it's quite grounded despite the space setting. It's a comedy-drama, many heart tugginf moments to go with the laughs.

It's been years since I watched it but it still brings a warm glow to my heart.
