Alledgedly the performance of AMD's new flagship GPU.

I'm also building a new PC for fun - part of my usual 18 month upgrade

after a week of research, im down to this setup - good choices, or have i missed on something - the 970s will be heavily overclocked, cant justify the price of the 980s over it in SLi

i7 - 4790K
Corsair Hydro H105 w/ Noctua NF-F12s
Corsair 850W 80+ Gold PSU
MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard
MSI GTX 970 SLi
Samsung 500Gb EVO SSD
Kingston Hyper X 16Gb 1866 DDR3
Corsair 450D Case
All fans replaced with Noctuas (x2 NF-P14) + (x2 NF-P12)
Creative ZxR Soundcard

Korean Qnix IPS 27" OC @ 120Hz - 2560x1440

Thoughts?
Most of the parts look fine. Unless you have a specific need for a sound card there's not much reason to get one, as onboard sound has enough features to cover most use scenarios. Power supplies and memory can change price due to frequent short sales, might be worth checking daily or so for new deals. Speaking of the power supply..

There are 3 different Corsair 850 watt gold rated power supplies, so I have no idea which one you picked. If it's the RM850, then there are better choices due to cheap capacitors. I can't even find any reviews for the budget-oriented CS850M. The HX850 is a solid choice, though it's $150 at the moment so it's a bit high (according to price chart it frequently drops to $110 and sometimes even $90). I recommend the EVGA Supernova G2 850 watt PSU for $120, it's cheaper right now, fully modular and well-reviewed, also occasionally drops below $100. An even cheaper solution for now might be the Seasonic G-750 for $95.

As for the memory, I think there are much better deals out there. I'm unsure which model you chose, (HyperX Beast or HyperX Predator), but it's over $170 right now which is a high price. For high speed memory there's a decent deal right now, Patriot Viper 3 LP 16GB DDR3-2133 for $137.

are the ones sold at the moment already payched or you need to find and install the patch yourself?
I'm kinda of a noob,so the less work i have to do,the better
It's not hard. I figure that the newer ones with a production date made in the last month should be already have the latest fix, otherwise you just have to download a file from Samsung, open it, click next a bunch of times and it'll be done. Probably best to update before you copy or install anything to the SSD. Or just get a MX100.

Well, if true, doesn't look too shabby. A 25% increase over GK110 with 23% less power draw. 30% performance increase over Hawaii and 30% less power draw. That's pretty good, all things considered, but then Hawaii has a lot of room for improvement with power usage. This means GM200 will probably be $/£/€1000 though.

If your wife is using it for anything other than gaming, then barebone laptops aren't the solution. Depending on how your last laptops failed, it'd probably be easier if you went with a different brand.

.

Thanks for the response.

Any recommended laptop brands? My wife is eyeing up an HP touchscreen laptop. Isn't HP notorious for adding a lot of bloatware?

Would love to get a Surface Pro 3 personally, but they seem ridiculously expensive and have such pathetic storage (64GB really?)

Laptops are so overpriced compared to desktops, ugh.

bump

i saw monitors on the first post , so i'd like to ask

right now i'm considering new monitor, started with asus and i compared all the models in their site and finally reduced the list to these options:

VX248H for $200.63 after importing costs

VG248QE for $294.64 after importing costs

VN247H-P for $217.38 after importing costs

VS278Q-P for $293.66 after importing costs

i know it's not a break dealer, but all of them including speakers as i'm not ready to buy sound system anytime soon

as for acer, i found this model,
GN246HL Bbid for $270.19 after importing costs
it's without speaker but i like that it's 100M contrast ration compared to asus's 80M contrast ratio

and for benQ, in respect of this thread:
XL2411Z for $330.99 after importing costs
but isn't it more expensive for a 12M contrast ration compared to other's 80M-100M ratio ?

there're other options in acer , benQ and viewsonic but i didnt bother to search unless someone recommend me something

i dont want to pay premium , but i'm fine with these range of prices.

to be honest, 'FOR NOW', i dont think i'll get the full benefit of 1ms respond nor +60hz refreshing, but i already have an old LG 23' monitor with TN panel and 5ms respond if not slower
so to buy a new one it should beat the old one and keeps serving me for years, or else i'd rather save my bucks for much later time, maybe new models would come later on with newer features.

btw, my VGA is AMD R280x, so i'm out of luck with any 3D feature included cause it's for Nvidia , in general i don like this feature even if my VGA is supported

so what are your thoughts?

Cross-posting from the 970 thread.. still scratching my head:

Having some trouble diagnosing why I'm getting some sub-60 fps drops, as well as a 30 fps lock while playing WoW and watching a Twitch stream:

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k2...ps0b2d4de7.jpg

(This above link is a shot of playing WoW in the garrison while a Twitch video was streaming)

My CPU is a i7-930 OC'd to ~3.1 GHz with 6 GB of RAM. Both of these were first bought in July of 2010, which I've since replaced my old ATI HD 5850 with the EVGA GTX 970.

WoW was running ~50 fps in the screen-cap, but sometimes I've noticed it hard capping at 30fps randomly, then suddenly it will shift to 60 fps. Really strange. Maybe the hard drive is starting to wear down?? Or am I just being overly picky for the performance I am getting with what I am doing?

In my opinion you're looking way too hard in a segment where no model differentiates itself much. All but one of the displays are 6-bit TN-based panels, so pretty much the entry-level for colour reproduction and contrast. The Acer has a VA panel, so it should have better contrast than the others.
You can ignore "dynamic contrast" numbers, as it's nonsense and can't be used to measure anything useful. I recommend TFT Central for lots of useful info and trusted reviews if you want to be better informed.

Why are you buying a new monitor? What would you like to improve about the display you have?

It's been quite a while since I played WoW, but I seem to remember having a similar issue. I remember flash videos would down-clock my vid card and cause something like that. Are you watching youtube, twitch, etc. while playing? If so, you can try disabling hardware acceleration on flash by right-clicking a video and going to settings. You have to reload any video pages for it to take effect.

Yeah, I mentioned this earlier. I was looking at the Enthoo Pro/Luxe for a long time, and then this came out. Kinda stuck between the two.

While I like the focus on sound dampening here, I still feel like Enthoo Pro is the one I'm going to go with.

i honestly cannot wait any longer. we need that leap already (or hopefully there is a leap).

i want that 980 but seriously new tech offerings are very enticing.

it isn't like there are so many games that will come out between now and q2.

and a 980 pretty much is an improved 780. next round of gpus are 20nm and 3d mem stacked.

Wait, I would just get a placeholder 970 and wait till q4 next year.

First chart is performance, second is power consumption.

I think I'm going mad :lol it's the first one I'm having issue with. I see Captain Jack sitting below the 780 in it... :S

EDIT - Now it makes sense! Missed the double bit. Didn't see that the top ones were multi GPU.

I thought this was 380X performance figures?

Nearly doubling the performance of a 280X with a 10% power reduction.

Credible?

I would say no, wait for real benches. Plus nvidia is most likely ready with the hammer likely with a 980 Black or the likes, but hopefully there is also a 390x in the works.

Hi guys, I would like an opinion on my current rig:
CPU i5 2500k
R9 290 4Gb
Ram 8Gb DDR 3 1600mhz
MB: MSI Z77A-G43
Win 7 OS on SSD (Crucial M4)
PSU: 650W

I like to game at 1080p and trying to reach a minimum of 40fps in most games and trying to hit high or ultra settings. I assume my CPU or RAM is holding my system back and would like opinions if its worth me doing a minor upgrade?

RAM Should I purchase RAM and pick two more 4Gb sticks that run at DDR 3 2400mhz?

COOLER Or should I pick up a aftermarket air cooler for my CPU and overclock it to get more power out of it?

CPU Is it worthwhile for to upgrade to an i5 4690? Toms hardware CPU Gaming Hierarchy chart says its not worth it. This is not a minor upgrade and would require a new motherboard.

Been lurking here for a while, looking to build a PC over the next couple of months and would appreciate any advice. It'd be my first build.

Current specs: Non-existent
Budget: UK £550-600
Main Use: Light gaming 4, Video & photo editing 5, General Usage 5.
Monitor Resolution: In the market for a full 1080 HD 24+ monitor that'd fit my main uses, and I'd like it to come under the budget but I believe that might be impossible. Would be looking for a 2 monitor set up in the future for editing.
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Must be able to run Photoshop, Premiere Pro & After Effects. Need it for university paper writing and general usage too. Gaming wise, I'd be playing nothing too demanding, it'd be nice to be able to run some new releases on medium settings but I'm not too bothered as I'll be getting a next gen console at some point to play with friends. Got a backlog of old PC stuff that anything I get should hopefully be able to run (more specifically, the GTX 680 / 750 or equivalent has been what I've been going with so far, totally open to change and advice)
When will you build?: Next month / January but I'm not against the idea of pre-built machines if somebody could point me in the right direction. Especially since I won't be re-using any ports or a monitor or anything.
Will you be overclocking?: Would I be a fool not to?

I'm a bit of a noob at this, going to be looking into the memory / storage specs best for video editing so if anybody could spare any advice on that it'd be greatly appreciated. Also, would i3 / budget AMD processors suit my needs and keep me right for a couple of years? i5 possible on my budget? Thanks in advance, thread has been a great help so far.

It depends. Sometimes early leaks and rumors are way off the mark and sometimes they're pretty spot on. Hawaii's leaks showed it beating the GTX 780/Titan or being about as fast, which is how it mostly turned out. Before that, the 6970's leaks showed it being faster than it actually was.

As always, take these things with some amount of salt.

i've a good PC and many home consoles some of older generations, so 2 monitors might get me more freedom especially if i divert the use of them based on the compatible ports.

actually there's no good enough reason to buy a new one, cause i'm very happy with the current monitor but i thought maybe get another one with good price and configs so i can get some freedom to not depend on one monitor for everything tho it's now always like this

this is my current one:
LG M237W ,a TN with FULL HD and 5ms respond, was $230 at time
http://www.lg.com/hk_en/monitors/lg-M237WA-PT - similar but without the big ports

WNR9IRd.jpg

12KAE56.jpg

it's not like that i'm rich and wanna throw money to get the luxury of having 2 monitors, i'm getting it cause i believe i'd need it somehow, at east cause i'm at another city right now, and if it wasn't for the current monitor, i may get settled with VN247H-P for its small bezels or VX248H if its better in anyway, but because of it, i put more options to get the best possible one out here cause i' not planning to buy another one for many years ahead

sorry for the long post that it may not having the details you requested

Perhaps it's the vsync.

So the video vsync on the other monitor is causing everything to be locked to 30? That's interesting...

Yeah, I'm watching Twitch/Youtube/Giant Bomb. I'll try disabling hardware acceleration and see if that helps! Thanks.

RAM: If you're planning to add the new RAM rather than replace the old RAM, the new RAM will run at the lower frequency of the old sticks. So you might as well get a set of 2 x 4 GB at 1600 MHz. For gaming the higher clock speed doesn't give that much better performance anyway.

Cooler: Definitely! A cheap way of getting more life out of your CPU.

CPU: I'd say see what you can do with overclocking you current CPU first, and if you really run into issues you can still upgrade later.

Hi guys

Would love some input on a build I'm looking at

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LLsYwP

Main Use: Gaming at 1080P (downsampling when I can) and Emulators. Would love to be able to lock the newest games at 1080P/60... I realize that might not be entirely realistic but I do have plans to SLI in the future.

I'm aware of the current states of games like AC Unity, FC4 etc. I follow almost all of the individual PC perf threads for new games so I know some current games are bringing even >$2K rigs to their knees.

Monitor: 1080P Panasonic Plasma

Deadline: Not one currently, will patiently wait for deals on the parts I want but I already have the Samsung SSD on the way and will be picking up the 4790K for ~$110 from the intel retail edge deal (5930K didn't seem worth another ~$130 for gaming?). Those are the only choices that are somewhat locked.

Overclocking: Maybe? (Yes) Never done it before, but will if it makes sense performance wise.

I've left off memory as I really am not picky I guess? I figured 16 GBs of whatever is reasonable perf/price. I've read that this has less impact than it used to comparing brand to brand?

Biggest caveat. I would like to do this (even SLI?) in an HTPC case as I want to put the whole rig in a TV stand. Really hoping no one has to crush that dream...

Currently moving off:

i7 940
HX620 PSU
GTX 780 SC w/ ACX
500GB WD Black
12GB DDR3

Thanks so much for any insight and advice you guys can offer. Truly appreciate that there's a resource like this available.

Has anyone found that an OC that is stable in Windows is unstable in Linux?

Kind of took me by surprise, I have a dual boot but haven't used Linux on my desktop in a while. Anyone have some clues?

What do you mean by "1 6x2 cable"? Each GTX 980 should have two of these cables directly from the power supply plugged in. Do NOT use these power adapters that came with the video card.

Game performance depends on what games he's playing. Some games benefit more from stronger CPU, other games do better with a GPU upgrade. If I had to go with one or the other, I'd go with a GPU upgrade. Here's some direct comparison benchmarks and game tests between the two. The charts don't account for the Phenom being overclocked and the 8350 is at normal speed and isn't a black edition, but the differences are roughly that much.

How much money?

HAhAHA. It finally boot. Thanks. hehehe.. I am a super noob about this. I got no time to install OS since I gotta work but question. I got no cable to connect wired internet but I got wireless dongle (new one) which I connect to the USB port. I can still get internet, right?

I don't run Windows, but I have an overclocked 4790k and run Linux. I'm surprised it would make a difference, since the overclocking is done in the BIOS. Have you monitored the frequencies, voltages, and temperatures under Linux? Which linux distro are you using? Are you using intel_pstate? What scaling governor is set?

Definatly possible since Linux maybe interacting with the BIOS and affecting things like speedstep settings. But usually it means the OC wasnt stable anyways.

How have you tested for stability?

You are crazy doing an SLI build for the living room, but it depends on how much noise you can tolerate and also how big the case can be.

I advise steam box type of machine using Mini ITX board and case like a Silverstone RVZ01 or Fractal Design Node 304.

You could consider Fractal Design Node 605 for an SLI build under the TV, depends on space.

Just so you have an idea, I do all of what you want to do with my Node 304 i7 3770 @ 4.2Ghz and GTX 970. 8Gb 2133Mhz cl10 ram, 630w Seasonic PSU. Emulation performance is amazing.

Possible to add another GTX 970 for SLI.

Also its silly to chase Ubisoft games. You will overspend and see huge depreciation of component value for a few games. Its just not worth it.
Im getting about 55-60fps on my rig all Ultra settings with the nasty stutter ever so often. Similarly to WatchDogs, even if you had the entire compute power of the planet, it will still stutter such the nature of the engine. FC4 is literally the only game giving me this problem, its actually worse than WatchDogs in this regard.

That may work I have my memory clock set at +243. I have not tested yet with offset around 300 or so without lowering the clock speed to less than ~1300, so I got crashes those times.

It seems like no matter what I do, if I go up even 2MHZ I start artifacting.

Is this a normal overclock? I get only 10,000 in 3D Mark's FireStrike.

I had been using 4.5GHz at 1.335V in Windows for the last couple weeks with occasional p95 runs and it seemed okay. I didn't test it overnight admittedly. Anyway, after finding it was unstable in Linux I reverted to a stable 4.3GHz setup I have been using for the last year or so. It seemed to be okay there, as I just now ran mprime for a while, using lm-sensors to monitor the temps and vcore--they were about what I'd expect--and there are no problems so far. I am using Ubuntu 13.10 by the way. Maybe it is just more sensitive than windows to instabilities somehow?

I'm not sure what pstate is, but I do have speedstep enabled (unless I'm confusing terminology). In Windows it drops to 1.6GHz/1V on idle, but in Linux it goes to 1.6GHz/0.74V on idle. I'm not sure why they're different. I'm using a vcore offset of -0.03V. (edit: now it's at 1V on idle in Linux. I don't understand cpus.)

Thanks so much for taking the time to make all those recommendations. I actually really like that Fractal 605 case. Newegg says that it'll fit an 11" card with both HDD cages out and I think the 980's are 10.5", so that works. I'll figure out another way to mount the SSD.

Is there a reason you didn't select a water cooled solution for CPU cooling? I understood it was almost necessary if you OC'd, but I'm not certain.

Is 850W enough power if I do decide to go SLI in the future?

The three mobo's you recommended are all mini/micro. Do I lose anything stepping down from full size ATX to those options?

Thanks so much!

Been about 3-4 years since I built my PC via this sub.

Time for a slight upgrade.

Looking to move my components into a smaller case (ordered the Fractal Design Node 304)

Currently inside a Fractal Define R3

Going to keep my i5 2500k / 8GB 1600Mhz Ripjaws

Could someone recommend a good GPU that will run GTA V at near or max settings? (at least 30 fps with the forthcoming IceEnhancer) that also fits in this case. Currently on a GTX 570.

I also currently have a 650W PSU. Will this need to be replaced?

Also in search of a mobo that will fit inside the mini case, is Hackintosh compatible, and has built in Wi-Fi.

Sorry for all the questions!

Is the LG 34UM95 worth the asking price? Currently price dropped to $809 on Amazon.

Since you're moving from ATX to ITX, you'll need a new motherboard too. Not sure, but it might be a bit costly to get one that supports the 2500k (I really have no idea though) since its a bit older (but still a damn good CPU, especially if overclocked).

No one knows what it'll take to run GTA5 yet. Whats your budget? It's generally best just to get whatever the best thing you can afford is.

The power supply will be fine.

Ok so I wont be going to class again, I'm pretty much dropping out. But I still want to pursue my dreams. Now that I will have a lot more time on my hands I can definitely get some work done properly.

Of course I need a PC for Gaming but mostly 3D rendering software like Maya, video editing software, Photoshop, UDK ect. I'm not PC tech savvy enough to pick out PC parts correctly on my own so I was hoping that some of you could help me build a PC that could accomplish these tasks for around $800-ish.

Agh!! My second 6950 was going bad, so I went to remove it to try a fix. I forgot that the stupid PCI-e slot has that little release clip. :-(

I pulled, and it didn't just break the clip. It took half the PCI-e slot with it. Am I just SOL here until I get another motherboard? At least the PC still boots with the first GPU.

quick dumb question, but what (adapter?) do I need in order to plug a standard 3-pin 120mm fan directly into my PSU? I can't go into the motherboard. I realize the fan will run non-stop, but that's okay. Is there some type of 3-pin fan female -> 6-pin male? I can't seem to find it. Thanks. so much.

You'll need a 3-pin to Molex adapter. Something like this, except just one to one.

Not looking to spend more than 500 (minus the monitor)

I guess I will have to do some research on which mobo to get. Not trying to get another processor when the 2500k has been working fine :p

Whats the best GPU in terms of bang for the buck? I was looking at the 290 or possibly even the 970 but if the 280/x gets a steady 60fps in GTA, I could settle for that.
