There's 3 controller for the console, 3.

this is not like move or kinect. They had to actually release 2 other controller options because the main controller is not comfortable enough for all their games.

I know it can be comfortable for you, its not even a real problem for me , but the fact that they re released a completely obsolete controller for 1 GAME. screams lack of confidence to me.

It feels like they're saying that the Wii U is not as good for smash as your beloved GC.

And that doesn't really help to promote the idea of the Wii U being an Upgrade.

except that's what the diehards wanted. For all intents-and-purposes, the gamecube controller is the "fight stick" of Smash Bros. And companies release fight sticks for new entries in fighting games all the time. Is that an admittance of failure too?

Sticks work for almost every fighting game out there. The GC controller works with 1 (one) game.

I'm sure you can see the issue.

Think about it, if diehards demand a 64 controller for a new Mario, should they release it?

Welp. Good 3DS week, disappointing for the WiiU (no holiday effect this time), mediocre/bad for the others...
Also, wow at guilty gear, way worse than I expected
Typically the Christmas season doesn't kick off until the second week in December, it's not like the West where it begins in late November. Expect a boost next week :)

It's not a comparative appraisal. The PS4 being in the shitter doesn't make the Wii U sales good. Nor do the XBO's make everybody else's sales fantastic.

This is the last release of considerable significance* to the Japanese market that the system will have. Or at least the last it will have in a while.

It's also the most wonderful time of the year. So part of this upward momentum may be attributable to Nintendo's typical holiday boosts.

And yet, it's down considerably over last year.

*ymmv, I suppose. Kirby can be pretty big.

what was it last year?

Wii U is a poorly thought out console, but the GC controller support is indicative of nothing.

The only issue I see is you forgetting the GameCube and Wii exist.

And how suddenly offering options to users is a bad thing.

Consoles are doomed buddy.

Well, PS4 will probably outsell it...eventually.

I don't know what "easily" means, though, considering their horrible LTDs.

The GCN controller adapter is basically a gift to the community, it's not indicative of anything else really besides celebrating Smash (which can also be played with a Pro Controller, Classic Controller, Wii remote, Wii remote + nunchuck, or even a linked 3DS, 3DSXL, 2DS, New 3DS or New XL). If Nintendo really had as little confidence in the Gamepad as you say then why haven't they decoupled it from the system yet so they can slash $100 off and maybe actually start selling more? Why is the GCN controller adapter so insanely supply constrained?

Perhaps some time in 2016 or 2017?

I feel late 2016
I remember doing some math a month or two ago.

It was like:
In order to pass the Wii U by Nov 2015, it has to sell 22K more than the Wii U weekly starting then.
And to do it by Nov 2016, 11K more of course. Something like that.

But yeah, this discussion has been had.

I think they spent waaaay too much money on the UPad that giving the Wii U a price cut comparable to the 3DS one would have nearly bankrupted the company. Or at least the board would have voted Iwata out.

Just speculation who knows. Just to replace the UPad costs between $80 and $100 dollars though, so take that into consideration.

No.

Fucking hell. It's a damn shame on Iwata's part to drag Nintendo back to NCL when he should have pushed for global shenanigans. NoA & NoE would have no doubt been of great use to Western publishers in this regard. NCL needs to get their shit together with their next platform(s).
Anyway, cheers for the response. :)

No not really.

You have seen what happened to Sony and Sega right? (Infighting killed Sega, between Murica and Japan) ( Sony just lost 100million dollars on a failed SSM side project)

Honestly Nintendo made dumber decisions cough sega deal cugh

Third parties gave Wii U some of the biggest games they had that sell milions on other platforms: Fifa, Madden, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, NFS and tons of smaller ports.

But there was absolutly no point to buy those games on Wii U since console itself offered no gains over ps3/x360.

If Wii U offered visible jump over previous generation gamers would be there - as record breaking PS4 sales shown market wanted new consoles really really bad.

For a 500$ system? Really? You expect core gamers would have eaten that shit up?

The only way this would be possible is that the Wii U completely falls off the cliff with no games for like 6 months or more as was the case with the Wii.

This is a new generation of mobile gamers. PS4 won't have the same success as the PS3.

10./00. [3DS] Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind - Chain <ACT> (Spike Chunsoft) {2014.12.04} (¥5.378) - 19.172 / NEW <20-40%>

Pretty bad sell through, but solid sales.

Fantasy Life Link! ( Level 5 ) { 2013-07-25 } - 18,946 / 67,256
Bravely Default: For the Sequel ( Square Enix ) { 2013-12-05 } - 36,990 / 61,799

Nice

Conversely the Wii U's first year wasn't as awful Vita's. It's a battle of headless chickens here. There's no winner here, they're both huge failures.

well yeah, but the Vita is quickly approaching the point where the Wii U's final LTD can't possibly reach it, not to mention the launch-aligned comparison for Vita 2013/Wii U 2014 and Vita 2014/Wii U 2015 (lol)

also today I learned that apparently having Gamecube controllers for Smash shows Nintendo's lack of confidence...somehow

Wii U will sell less than Gamecube. If PS4 don't sell more home consoles are dead, but I don't think they are despite a big drop in sales.

PS4 will have all major third party games and will be the console for people that want to play big franchises.

For that to happen the PS4 needs to sextuple its current sales projection. Its not happening without a price drop and strong momentum. Kinect levels propulsion.

Mobiles have cut into the console pie. The general public is far less engaged with any of these systems. Morpheus is the PS4's best chance to do something.

Consoles have a hell of a hard time fighting disinterest in japan because they're not a constant presence in their lives.

Lots of people are still satisfied with their older machines

Been safe for over a year.

Meh its up year over year in the west, we'll see where it goes from here.

Quick question, how do you do your math?

The Vita's doen nearly about 10 million in 3 years. Somewhat better than the DreamCast. You honestly think the Wii U's not going to reach the same threshold worldwide?

See the thing here is the Vita's JP sales > Western sales. For the Wii U, Western sales > JP sales.

PS4 current LTD (Media Create): 838,525
838525x6=5,031,150, which would be more than the Wii U

.....what?

it's a good thing I'm referring specifically to Japan sales then, huh

That's what most people's expectations were.

Lower debut than Mario Kart 8, but should conveniently debut between 275-325k.

It's a disappointment - let's see how it's legs fare during the holiday season.

You know what I call this? People on the internet pulling numbers straight out their ass. Anyway, the wii u needs more bundles/marketing come next year if they want to retain a similar YTD.

I didnt say LTD. I said current sales ( ERGO weekly sales need to increase by 6 to hit that number)

What the hell, they released the GCN controller because the competitive smash community needs a wireless controller.

The reason you guys are always wrong is because you're jus trying to bolster sales when nintendo is trying to bolster their profits.

This is why you guys never predict anything that's right.

SCEJA decided that Minecraft isn't worthy of a physical release on PS3 and Vita (LBP3 on the otherhand ...). The jury is still out on the PS4 version since that's not out in Japan yet.

PS3 version 150k (or more?)
PSV version 75k

yeah, not a worth :D

but XB1 got retail version... 4k

I thought Christmas season would provide the Wii U with a slightly bigger cushion in the ever exciting super duper race for obscurity with the PS4...but I guess I may have been wrong.
I think the holiday period will push the lead out by somewhere between 50k-100K units. But then that will get whittled away again in the new year.

Although it's still going to be a very long time, if ever, that the PS4 passes it in terms of LTD. When the numbers are this low that extra year of sales does present a reasonably large hurdle.

Wii U is a poorly thought out console, but the GC controller support is indicative of nothing.

The only thing that's poorly thought about it is how they advertised the damn thing. Gamepad looks like a freaking monolith in all the adds.

That and people like pachter who think you need to hold the gamepad up away from your body and face to use any of the gyro controls lol

Can still be doomed and outsell the wii U

It's quite possible that the next console generation will have started by the time that happens in Japan, and that's with a console that's cratered. That's what people mean when they say consoles are "doomed" or "irrelevant" in Japan.

Wii U had a muh better start than ol PS4'diddy.

The reality is that no matter the software support, its simply not practical to play on consoles these days in Nippon.

I dont quite know how we're supposed to estimate 3rd party franchise compared to Nintendo's and the reach they've had previously to what they have now. I dont see them helping the PS4, which is designed to be much more in tune with a western audience than a Japanese one, which the Wii U was designed for.

The only justification that "more third party support" will help the PS4 is that the software library reaches a critical mass and some break out hit makes everyone want one like its hot Youkai Hunting seasons. The only thing I can think of that has a chance of doing this is Morpheus

But the PS4's library is smaller in japan compared to america. 60 titles are missing last I checked.

I made a post in the last thread about the amount of silly shit I've read on Media Create threads before.

I finally decided to say something about it. But I'll settle down.

Some of these things said in this corner of the forum are so out of sync with reality that everyone and their mother, have a little meltdown when reality never cares to match their expectation.

Then everyone just gets super negative and its just a chore to read. There's a reason people dont take Neogaf seriously and that's just one of them

Necessity would dictate Nintendo release a new [console] system in 2016, so I'd agree.

But practicality would suggest that they don't have a new system until 2017.

Also, I don't really know if Nintendo releasing a new system essentially off-cycle from everyone else in 2016, when in likelihood the PS4 and XBO will be in their prime and likely about two years prior to their successors, amounts to a new generation

People say west like home console and hate handheld and in Japan they love handheld and hate homes consoles but wii u is a home console and sold poorly in west and vita is a handheld and sold poorly in Japan.
The truth is people will buy consoles or handheld if it has good support in Japan or in West

Generations are chronological in nature so the 9th generation will begin with whoever decides to release the next console. I also believe the other 2 will succumb to a shorter generation both for the necessity of their hardware and the health of the industry which suffered at large at the extended previous generation.
