NPD Sales Results for November 2014 [Up3: NPD Data Error, AC:U #5]

Software sales are disastrous compared to last gen (Software Revenue is down from $1.70 billion in November 2006 to just $1.06 billion in November 2014)

Wouldn't say that at all. Comparing the 2006 and 2014 environments using only packaged sales isn't apples to apples.

No digital last time.

Also far fewer titles being released on disc in 2014 vs 2006.

No PS+ or GWG last go.

Not to mention toys to life revenues...

They just aren't comparable periods.

It's really difficult to say authoritatively if the total market SW demand on console really is up or down versus that period.

This is the problem.

There really is no way to call any of this doom and gloom either way.

The only thing that can be really be seen without a doubt is that Nintendo is suffering with competition from less traditional markets.

Aren't the biggest Xbox exclusives multiplayer focused games? Halo, Forza, Gears, etc. There is a very high probability they would buy live then.

I can only speak for myself and my friends, none of whom have purchased an Xbox Live subscription, nor really any games beyond what came with the console and Sunset Overdrive.

We were planning to do the Halo:MCC thing but only I had purchased it prior to release, and we sorta moved on before it worked well enough for me to buy Live or my friends to buy the game.

MS is poised to have another mega-holiday season with regards to sales in NA (and UK) 2015.

Halo 5
Forza 6
Tomb Raider
Possibly even QB
Possibly even Scale Bound

Not to mention the bevy of AAA 3rd-party games to come.

Their strategy of hoarding all these exclusive + aggressive pricing for the holidays is brilliant.

It actually works lol

Only 2 months next year just like this year. Well, that's not so brilliant. MS regained May and September loss vs. PS4. What about other months? Are you sure that MS will win Nov. and Dec. next year?

The reasoning just makes no sense to me. They should be content with losing 10 months out of the year in hopes of winning the other 2? Keep in mind it's a hope not a guarantee.

Furthermore, what's to stop Sony from dropping their price next holiday? Or offering more compelling bundles/deals? Makes no business sense at all.

Agreed.

Now... If you want to talk dedicated handheld gaming? Doom and gloom away, unfortunately. Still think Nintendo will exist in the space, but for how long? Who knows.

Pretty dramatic turnaround after Sept.+Oct.'s big gains.

Not to mention the significant losses MS had to incur to move those 1.2M Xbox One's this holiday. Meanwhile Sony sold over 800K PS4s without giving away the store. When you have to sell your box at a loss and give away two or three free games and gift cards as well to defeat an opponent who is still selling very well by virtue of just showing up, it's not a very good business model. Especially when said competitor can simply drop their price if they truly begin to feel threatened.

Microsoft may have deeper pockets overall than Sony, but how much money are they willing to lose just to be able to say they are winning?

Wow, that sentence needs a roadmap. -_-

Graph looks more dramatic because % difference decreases at larger numbers. If the ps4 sold the same as xbone the gap % would have still decreased... not to downplay the xbone's victory here

There are multiple other good things about the bundles/deals than just MS being able to say they beat the PS4 for the biggest month of the year.

They caused many people to make the jump to current gen sooner than they originally expected; Very good thing during such an early part of this current gen. Don't see how getting more people to make the jump to your console early (a time in which many companies usually create/test out new IPs) is bad at all.

You know Sony will have a Uncharted Bundle next year. I do feel bad for Sumo Studios and Little Big planet 3 as that game tanked. It should not have been released up against GTA V remaster, DA:I, and other strong games in November.
Hopefully Sony pushes the game more after the holidays or promotes it more.

Next year is going to be crucial for MS as this year was them blowing their load for releases, while Sony spread them out more, and let smaller games on the PSN store shine. Microsoft should be afraid of PSX announcements. Sales wise January and Feb are going to be interesting.

I fear for Microsoft next year for the competition from Sony will be fierce, and I wonder after the windows 10 thing if Microsoft will let the division eat so much margin for Holidays in 2015.

Dude why you being so hyperbolic, You could get and X1 for $350 with about 3 or 4 games and you could get a PS4 for $399 with about 3 or 4 games, its not the biggest difference, sony Could of had a small loss to.

Are sony really in a position to drop there price?, I remember at launch Andrew House saying that they were glad MS didnt undercut them because they couldn't go lower then $399, a year later and in some cases they were giving away 4 games, of about $100 worth of value, I doubt they will be able to do much more then that.

I dont think we will see the PS4 undercut the X1 in price, it may be the same but not lower.

Anyway I think the sales figures are very positive for everyone it shows sony,ms and Nintendo what consumers want.

Really don't get how MS "blew their load". There were definitely a good number of solid games released for the Xbox One in 2014 but so many to the point in which they did that? Don't agree. 2015 should have just as many games as 2014, if not more.

Genuine interest here.

Did they?
Forza
MCC
Titanfal
SSOD
Four biggies this year. What's next year?

have no clue since none of the first party output has interested me other than SSOD and yes I realise third parties will help carry them as they have carried Sony this year but the big ones are tied to Sony marketing (?)

:lol one month and we're back to March gap. I'm guessing in December 2014 we will have the same gap of December 2013 (or even lower).

Bear in mind the y axis is percentage based and the LTDS of the consoles is ever increasing so a 15% gap now is much more significant than one in March.

Don't you think having sales on the y axis would paint a clearer picture?

Forza 6 (assumed, not announced)
Halo 5
Quantum Break
Tomb Raider
Also #IDARB (such hype!)

No assumptions unless it's an annual title.
There has been a Forza Motorsport release every two years since it came out. Horizon was done by Playground, not Turn 10

Forza Motorsport (2005)
Forza Motorsport 2 (2007)
Forza Motorsport 3 (2009)
Forza Motorsport 4 (2011)
Forza Motorsport 5 (2013)

Forza Horizon (2012)
Forza Horizon 2 (2014)

Wasn't QB 16? And considering MCC I would expect MS to delay it. Two launch failures is a good way to kill a franchise. :/

But as for the rest, yepp. Nice things all over.

Their big games were MCC, Froza, Titanfall, SSOD and their biggest sellers they release in November. Instead of spreading them out. Also having alternating Forza games is not a good idea. Spread it out more.

Look at the games they released in a years time. Dead Rising 3 was a big game, Titanfall they pushed hard, Forza pushed hard, and so was SUNSET.

They don't have anything till the same time frame next year. Quantum Break is a Q3-4 game, forza is in OCT-NOV, and Halo 5 is November.

What do the have for first 2 quarters? Evolve push? Sony has The order:1886, then BloodBorne, then MLB:The show, then bunch of smaller release games like The Tomorrow CHildren, Grim Fandango is in January, and Broken age follows.

Then in fall you've got Uncharted 4, possibly Ratchet and clank depending on where they are on that game.

Scale Bound and Crack down are 2016 games at the earliest. gears of War HD collection would be great for Microsoft.

Fable Legends looks like it will be a Fable Journey issue, where people fans of the series will be put off.(According to what people played at E3)

I looked into other thread and Microsoft better have some kind of Killer Bundle next year like they did this year, and depending on financials in 2015, if they are not selling software we may not see as big of deals.

Just my 2 cent's.

About Tomb Raider I have a feeling this game will get deleyed as they still haven't shown any gameplay.

Thing is game has been in production for a while I think we'll see something on that In the spring.

But it could get pushed depending on Uncharted 4 keeps 2015 fall release.
