Why Nintendo's Wii U Might Be The Best Console To Unwrap Christmas Morning [BLOGGER]

The article was pointing who is pushing it more which I agree with to an extent. Sony and MS are more about online functionality, which is not a bad thing but I think the article was pointing out fun with the family. Mom isn't going to want to play the new Tekken and again I don't think co-op couch options not being on other consoles was the point.

Its not about who is pushing it more. He is trying to paint Nintendo as the Saviour of local co-op.

Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I don't get it.

Don't get me wrong the system has some good games, but I don't think it has the best games of the generation. People keep saying how awesome Bayonetta 2 is, but its just another 3rd person action game and I generally hate those. Same for games of a semi-similar nature like Devil May Cry or God of War. Not for me. Didn't like the original Bayonetta at all. If you have a game that requires button combos, or "punch" "kick" "evade," you've already lost me. Its the same thing for fighting games. No thank you.

And then people mention how amazing Wonderful 101 is. Nah, not for me. I hated it, in fact. Game made absolutely zero sense in either story or game. Mario kart 8 was great - but it lasted me a weekend and then I was done with it. Mario 3D Land is undeniably good, but if you don't particularly like platformers like myself, it isn't going to change your mind about them. Smash Brothers? never cared for those games, don't like fighters or brawlers. I don't find them even slightly engaging.

My favorite game on the system was Nintendoland, and I had to play that alone. I just don't know anyone that would come over and play Nintendo games on a couch. When you're my age that just doesn't happen. You play games online or you don't play with people. Maybe I'm just being unreasonably picky, but I strongly disagree with the thrust of this article. I don't hate the Wii U at all, it just didn't hold my attention very long. It's very much like the Wii in that respect.

I'm sorry Nintendo fans, don't hate me. I think Nintendo does amazing stuff, just not on the Wii U. I think the 3DS blows it out of the water, in fact. Such a wider variety of games on that system.

It happened here. Both suddenly dropped to £99 from significantly higher price points. I got burned by both. Again though, I wouldn't expect that for the Wii U.

The one that means you can play whenever you like without having to get 7 mates over? The one that means you can play with friends that live in other cities?

For most adults, I'd wager online multiplayer is far more convenient.

At least in my life, the Sony/Microsoft solution is more fitting. I live thousands of miles from the people I game with, and even when I did not syncing even a few schedules to be at the same place at the same time was never easy

Nintendo: This internet fad will end any day now, so we aren't spending any money putting any real effort into online multiplayer. Why not have a bunch of your friends pile into your tiny studio apartment so you can play some local co-op? You can sit on each other's laps!

Sony/Microsoft: ...?

Guess which future people have decided to buy. Hint: NPDs.

I won't presume to question the value of online multiplayer. That's certainly not what I'm saying--that local is more valuable than online.

But it's hard to ignore the fact that the best-selling console of last generation was built on local multiplayer, and that its manufacturer is the only one has actually done anything to surpass what was previously technically possible in that space (5-player support via GamePad, split-screen free local play via Off-TV, 8-player fighting game). They've done this even though doing so is actually disadvantageous to them from a value-captured-by-sales perspective (you sell more consoles and games if you focus on online multiplayer).

And they still offer online multiplayer in the games that matter, even on top of that.

I'm not saying they should win, but I think they should definitely be lauded for their commitment to actually advancing local multiplayer despite the fact that it doesn't mean they'll make more money selling consoles and games to everyone who wants to play since their games all revolve around online multiplayer (some people will be satisfied to play their friend's game on their friend's Wii U, which has been the case for 90% of my dozens of hours of Wii U multiplayer so far).

The one that lets them play all the hot new games?

Touche! Nintendo not securing Minecraft is one of the worst business decisions they have made in the last ten years.

These 'why you should get wii u over x1/ps4' are increasing every day it seems.

Reality is it will do naff all. Marketing hasn't worked, and the perception of what Nintendo wanted wii u to be to what it is now has changed consumer opinion.

They need good games coming, which they have but very few obvious system sellers.
And they need to be competitive on price, which they aren't, atleast in UK, where ps4 and x1 bundles are dominating store poster space

Games wont help. At least not significantly.

Sorry but you could play Co-op up to 8 on PS2 if my memory serves right on FIFA and PES and I think on the 360/PS3 you could play up to 7 or 8 as well. 8 players playing the same games is hardly an innovation on the subject, not even an incremental innovation.

LOL at people saying comeback.....where? Also third party games I enjoy, as I do indies...why does the press all of a sudden forget they exist? The wii-u lacks publisher support.
Wii U does have indies. It has a handful of great 3rd party exclusives. But it's mainly a Nintendo exclusives machine, yes. If you can miss Nintendo games for a generation and be happy anyway, little reason to get a Wii U.

I believe all the praise Wii U is getting from the press, is because these journalists do care about Nintendo games, moreso now they are in HD, online, and polished to immense standards.

Would a mod consider updating the titled to indicate that this is a Forbes contributor, rather than an actual Forbes article?

Edit: Seems Forbes contributors are a little more vetted than your usual "contributor" at a content aggregate. Mea Culpa.

Fantastic contribution, would read again.

Y'know, this response of yours contributes roughly as much as mine did, so what now, chief?

I was just having a joke playing off the regular shittiness of Forbes contributor pieces anyways, so there's no need to get defensive.

I think it is more that they have children and/or friends to play with. Ps4 and x1 are shit for that. Who in their right mind would buy either for anyone under 15? What would you play on psone for party games?

I have to agree with you. I've had the WiiU since launch, and I have yet to play anything on it that really excites me. I have all the big games too. Nintendoland was boring. Finished NSMB 100%. DK is ok, but I put it down after completing the first area and haven't had the desire to play since. I liked Wind Waker but then I liked the original a lot as well.

Currently I'm playing 3DWorld and am up to the Bowser world but I'm finding it to be a real chore to get motivated to finish the game. The flagpole and timers really kill 3D Mario for me, because I really loved all the past 3D Mario games and spent many, many hours playing them and exploring the worlds. I really hope Nintendo is working on a 3D Mario game like the past ones.

Incredibly not exciting if you wanted a different system as a kid.

Yeah for a lot of kids the console you get for Christmas is all you get. Imagine being stuck in Nintendo's lack of 3rd party ghetto with no way out. All your friends are playing CoD multi-player and Destiny. You can probably get them to come over a couple times a week to play Mario Kart or Smash, but after that... foreveralone.gif

I think now that Mario Kart and Smash are out - a lot of the core XBox/Playstation owners are going to pick up a Wii U as their 2nd console.

This post just sounds really weird to me - "I just don't like action games... racing games just don't hold my attention... what if you don't like platformers?... I also don't like fighters or brawlers..."

I mean yeah, you're entitled to your opinion... but in setting this up you're removing such a wide variety of games that people might like. Specifically in regards to you lumping in "what if you don't like platformers" while simultaneously removing various other genres under your own preferences... it's hard to really make a point like that.

Nintendo should have its own version of this ad:

Yeah I get that. You're probably right. I'm just saying overall the system's games didn't click with me.

But I love racers. It's my favorite genre.

More like pretend the original Xbox/Xbox Live never happened.
Online is free on Wii U. Besides I'm pretty sure kids would have a far better experience playing Mario Kart or Smash online than Halo. It doesn't mean Nintendo shouldn't copy Xbox Live even more, but online on Wii U, as limited as it is, works good enough in games that support it. I'm playing online daily on Fifa since I got the game, no voice chat but no lag either.

This is preference but I love my Wii U since launch.

SM3DW is pure joy
Lego City Undercover: open world lego with great story and humour
DKC TF is the best 2d platformer I have ever played
MK8 is beautiful to look at and beautiful to play
W101 is one of the most unique titles on consoles and great action game
Zelda WW HD is beautiful and a great lengthy game
ZombiU is the shit, really scary and uses the gamepad great

And I still haven´t played Smash, Captain Toad, Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2.

I seem to recall not being able to use most functions and the first update taking some time (though nothing unusual compared to a Xbox update). Maybe I was just wanting to get a NNID setup before firing up Nintendoland.

Certainly subsequent updates are almost disconcertingly easy, the system just downloads and announces it is ready to update. iOS updates arent as clean.

Thats correct. But you could always just cancel it and start playing right away. The updates would then download in the background.

what about Wonderful 101

My son (9) will be opening a Wii U Mario 3d Land bundle with Smash Bros, MK8, Wii Party U, and a Pro controller Xmas morning.
And I will be opening Bayonetta 2

I love Santa.

My brother jumped on the refurb Wii Us for $200 on the Nintendo website. I got mine at launch. Whatever it takes, get yourself a Wii U and enjoy these games!

what about Wonderful 101

What about it? It's one of two platinum games on the console that a small number of people care about. When you look at third party games that sell consoles, where does Wonderful101 rate compared to CoD, Destiny, and AC games. I personally don't care for those games that much, but I would give Destiny a shot if it ever comes to PC.

The point is that a very large number of people want to play those games and countless others, that will never come to Wii U. If I was a kid I would be pissed at getting a Wii U. Nintendo consoles are for Nintendo games.

I was very careful to say "8-player fighting game."

I'm honestly not trying to be cynical or pessimistic here. I love Smash. As a little background, I did all of the following in the leadup/post release of Smash 4:

  • Paid $10 to get someone's Club Nintendo early demo for the 3DS release.
  • Bought a $20 grip for my XL.
  • Bought the 3DS version from the eShop in the middle of the night of release (couldn't get the eShop to work at midnight) at $40.
  • Bought two more Wavebirds to have four wireless GC controllers at $30 each.
  • Bought two Smash-themed wired controllers to have four wired options at $30 each.
  • Bought a GC adapter (wish I'd have bought two in hindsight) at $20.
  • Bought a LAN adapter for my Wii U to have a wired option at $13.
  • Bought a powered USB hub so that I had enough ports for the GC adapter, my external HDD, and this hub at $15.
  • Bought a long ethernet cable to run from the router to the Wii U at $10.
  • Preloaded the game from the eShop at $60.

So, all in all, after tax and what not, I've spent over $300 on stuff just for Smash. I don't mean stuff that I could optionally include like the cost of the console itself or the HDD I already bought or the mortgage payment I make so that I have a house to play Smash in, I mean stuff that I bought for no other reason than to play Smash and improve that experience.

Now, obviously, that doesn't make me an authority on the situation. If you and your friends all love 8 player Smash, then who am I to say otherwise? Anyway, this long tangent is just to try to establish that I'm definitely not trolling here. With that out of the way, while I'll concede it's an interesting diversion that I'm glad they've added, I really don't think 8 player Smash is that compelling of a feature. It's just a chaotic mess at that point. Fun in small bursts, but hardly where the game shines, and often times impractical to set up. It really feels like a "we were to busy asking whether we could do it that we didn't stop to answer whether we should" situation to me.

Mind you, local multi is a feather in Nintendo's cap. They've focused hard on it, and if that experience is what you're mainly looking for, then the Wii U is an excellent choice. But I don't think touting Smash's wacky 8 player mode really cements its position as the local multi king. That mode -- in my humble opinion -- gets old quick. And I've only played with six so far. I don't find myself thinking "call me when Street Fighter V has an 8 player mode; in the meantime me and my seven BFFs are going to stick to Smash 4."

do you play smash local mostly?

Man, Nintendo really fucked up in their advertising and messaging for the Wii U. Yes they have the best games atm for this gen, but the thing still sells like shit. And parents aren't going to buy this thing for their kids because they think its a $300 attachment for the Wii. They'll just pick up a PS4/Xbox One or a tablet. Nintendo really dun goofed on this console.

Well yeah, if you dislike character action games and don't have anyone to play local then Bayo2/W101/NL are a terrible combination, and the Wii U in general won't be your cup o' tea. That doesn't diminish the quality of the games though. I personally despise TLOU but still accept that it's a great game if it appeals to a lot of people.

Just do to time constraints as of late related to work, not really. Not with Smash 4. I had some people over last weekend, and some the first weekend it was released. But both times we played for a few hours. I'd love to play more, but just don't have the time.

But when we did play, one time we had five, and one time we had six. It's fun for a brief while, but honestly I think it's a bit TOO chaotic at that point to be something that's fun for more than a match or three. When my wife bowed out (she being the least serious about the game among all of us), the preferred method of local multi always defaults to 2 v 2 teams.

Do you live in world where only exclusives count? Most of Nintendo's exclusives(Bayo2, Smash, Kart, Donkey Kong) are in niche genres on top of that.

It's that time of year again! Click-bait puff piece articles about Wii U that all follow the same basic template: "Holiday time and you want to buy a new console: will it be the Sony Thesis or the MS Antithesis? The answer? Neither! Go with the Nintendo Synthesis instead!"

Not that I disagree with the premise of this article. If you miss local co-op and more traditional arcade-style action then you should choose a Wii U. It's the rhetoric that grates, not the message, per se.

OP, get one.

2 months ago I had no intention of getting one. Then I did, and now it's my favorite system even over my PS4. Some really seriously great games, and also Wii games and Gamecube if you do the simple Homebrew Channel hack.

I don't care much about multiplayer, local or online and I love Wii U. Well, I don't care much about Smash but Splatoon's online multiplayer makes me feel all kinds of things. :D

As generic as Wii U praise articles get, the replies of people saying it's not worth it are just as predictable. There's going to be personal taste and opinion, whether or not clouded by ignorance, that influence your view. Many people/kids would be upset getting a Wii U instead of another console. That said, I'm glad people are writing articles pointing out the good features of Wii U because Nintendo themselves can't market their console properly.

Its ok, the system is not for everyone (obviously) the genres on Wii U are limited, of course, when Nintendo are almost the only ones supporting it.
The 3DS blows it out of the water because it has much more japanese support, and Nintendo can make 3DS games much more easily,
The people that like the Wii U its because they have been enjoying the limited content the system has, as they are quality, polished games, but thats all, no reason to say something is wrong with you.

A good Wii U feature it very portable. very easy to travel with can take it to parties, we're the system shines

Though I've done this, its still a pain to lug around. Every time I do it I'm less inclined to keep traveling with it.

I think I'm slowly winning my friends over to the Nintendo side in doing so however.

I think the problem is when fans try to associate subjective stuff like this as an only truth. The "I want fun games thread" was a collection of people name dropping WiiU while being snarky about PS4/XBO systems.

The one that means you can play whenever you like without having to get 7 mates over? The one that means you can play with friends that live in other cities?

For most adults, I'd wager online multiplayer is far more convenient.

An article stressing the benefits of local play doesn't somehow take away the fact that you can play both Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros Wii U online. For free.

You just compared two action heavy games made by Platinum. If you don't like one, there's a good chance you won't like the other. Kinda like saying you don't like Halo and Call of Duty.

I don't agree with his couch co-op rant regarding the X1/PS4. Couch Co-op for me (and many others) always meant sport games and fighting games. And both of those completely skipped the Wii U this gen.

Not completely. Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Injustice and Smash Bros. are on the Wii U.

I would expect no further support from WB. Capcom hasn't released anything yet, so it's hardly a surprise that they wouldn't. Namco? I don't know. Obviously, Namco worked with Nintendo on Smash and is developing Pokken, so I don't know what that means for Tekken 7's chances. It's also worth noting that Injustice was given second-tier support.

A friend of ours has a 12 year old son who says he hates his Wii and wants a cool Xbox One. She came to me for advice, and he just won't be having a Wii U or PS4; all the cool kids in his school are getting an Xbox One.

She had me help choose games and the like, and it just felt all sorts of wrong. First off, she won't let him play bloody games with killing, or play online (good on her), but here I am buying an online focused console bundled with two mature rated Assassin's Creed games that she's going to have to open the box and remove before wrapping it.

Even more frustrating is that she really wants to be able to enjoy playing with her 12 year old son, 10 year old daughter, 4 year old brother, and husband; 5 people. The Wii U is built with 5 people in mind for most games; not happening with the Xbox One.

I ended up picking up Minecraft, Project Spark, Lego Marvel, and Rayman Legends, as well as his requested Madden, FIFA, and Just Dance, all with my GCU discount at Best Buy.

I guess this is just a stage that some kids go through. Thankfully, even in my tweenage years, my love for Nintendo stayed strong, and I wasn't afraid of what other kids thought of me.

This just all felt so unnatural; definitely the worst option for a 12 year old with protective parents, but what's done is done.
