Surprisingly excellent interview all-around. Here's the Star Fox part:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUkU6O4p7Lw&feature=youtu.be&t=5m32s

-Reconfirms that it will be out before Zelda.

-Miyamoto says that he is working on and playing the new Star Fox every day and jokes that his hands hurt as a result.
IMO this is this is pretty big news since this confirms that he (and Nintendo for that matter as opposed to an outside company) are working on it directly.

-Describes the basic gameplay: Cinematic (3rd person) view on the big screen, cockpit view on the gamepad. You are meant to split between the two while you are playing.
This sounds like the behind closed doors E3 2014 demo.

-In response to a His favorite Star Fox character is fox (he jokes that his eyebrows make him look like a Fox).

-Re-tells the anecdote about the shrine near him (with Torii gates that inspired the gameplay on the first Star Fox) that has a fox as the patron spirit.

-He confirms that it will have Amiibo support.
It is implied that it will be something on the level of the minor support in Mario Kart (this is partly my speculation).

Didn't they just say that the Fox Amiibo was the first batch to be discontinued?

They'll release a new version for the next game then. We're bound to end up with numerous versions of the really popular characters - as long as they have the same functionality, it's all good. Some of the Smash Bros. poses are less than ideal; it'll be nice to have choices.

no thank you.

Miyamoto's input ruined the last Paper Mario. This isn't good.

Ripping the story out of Paper Mario was a shame.

On the other hand, ripping the "story" out of StarFox would likely be one of the better things that could happen to that franchise, though.

Sticker star is bashed way more than it deserves, and most of the criticism doesn't apply to Star fox anyways. Making a super simple story in sticker star doesn't really apply to star fox where story was never important for example. Miyamoto has weaknesses as a developer, and things like RPGs are one of them. Star Fox is a completely different beast

This is the last game Miyamoto worked on. I think we'll be ok

You know that Super Smash Bros was on the box for that amiibo right?

They are just going to make ones for every game that they want amiibos for.

Expect to see the Star Fox WiiU line of amiibos.

This gives me hope for Star Fox being actually good, as its the first one made by EAD or, at least, Miyamoto since the (good) N64 game. I hope its all just Arwing, Landmaster, and Supermarine free-form combat.

That was Club Nintendo or something of the sort, and Miyamoto said to go with what the fans had voted for in whatever survey they did. Literally a "he listened to the fans and X happened".

Or am I misremembering?

I'm curious as to how this game will look. Was the offscreen shots of the demo at E3 indicative of how the game will actually appear? Cause it just looked like an HD Starfox 64 from what I could tell.

I think you're right. IIRC, only like 3% of people commented on the story in SPM (I think) so they figured it wasn't that important to people + Miyamoto's general story-phobia.

EDIT: It was less than 1%.

Iwata That's a difficult task. In some ways that would be the exact opposite direction from recent games in the series.
Tanabe Yeah. With regard to the story, we did a survey over the Super Paper Mario game in Club Nintendo, and not even 1% said the story was interesting. A lot of people said that the Flip move for switching between the 3D and 2D dimensions was fun.

Kudo I originally saw it in a way that's similar to Miyamoto-san. Personally I think all we need is to have an objective to win the boss battle at the end of the game. I didn't think we necessarily needed a lengthy story like in an RPG. Instead, we looked at the characteristics of a portable game that can be played little by little in small pieces and packed in lots of little episodes and ideas. I always did like putting in little ideas, so I actually enjoyed it.

No. Those graphics were probably placeholders for them to test the mechanics before recreating it in whatever engine their using. Or whatever they did have on the actual game was simply not ready to be shown, so they used that instead just to get the point across that Star Fox is coming.

Wait, really? Wow. I'm only peripherally aware of iJustine, but does she often get big-wig exclusive interviews like this? Especially releasing new information for the first time, from a company like Nintendo?

YES!! This has to be my most anticipated game. I hope it's just more of Starfox 64/Lylat wars. Don't want any crap on foot. Tanks and subs are cool, maybe some kind of new mech, that would be sweet!

Just need a release date.

Also can someone please explain to me how Amiibos work? Is it just a glorified character select?

I'm guessing Cuthbert is not involved. I'm curious about how it will end up. Last time Cuthbert wasn't involved in a Starfox game development, I was not pleased. I'm talking about Assault.

So excited that the cockpit will be on display on the gamepad--exactly the sort of the thing I wanted :)

Star Fox 64 is the best Star Fox and that has no Cuthbert.

That's not true at all. We knew from the beginning EAD was developing the game. However, Miyamoto mentioned he was going to need help finishing the game from a production standpoint most likely, so you may see some additional work forces in the credits. But this is a standard industry practice. I mean no one freaks out that BeeTribe and Avant "co-developed" Bayonetta 1 and 2.

Man, It's really weird. Star Fox games ended right around the time the star wars trilogy closed. I've always joked that the day they made a new Star Fox game is the day they make another Star Wars sequel, so here we are, 8 years later and a new Star Fox and Star Wars movie are being made in the same year.

lol

Um, isn't it really unsurprising that he's working on it directly? He's been working on it directly since the beginning as it sounded at E3. I doubt he would just hand off his work to an outside team without any control.
