Reading for January 16th: Vol 3. #57-59

_____________________________________________________________________

Before we start, here's a convenient link to the Comics OT which has been newly relocated to Community.

Anyways, we're doing our first comics book club!

The first book is a big one. The 2000+ page slice-of-life comic, Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore:

So that we can properly discuss the comic, this is what we're gonna do:
- We're going to read 3 issues every day, with the exception of Wednesday (because of new comics day).
- You can read ahead if you really want to, but don't discuss any of the issues you read ahead on until everyone else gets to those issues.
- Also, there won't be any need to use spoiler tags since we're all going to be in the same place in our reading. With that said, obviously don't check the thread until you've done your reading for the day (unless you want to be spoiled) and again, don't post about issues that you've read ahead on.

Finally all 4 of us can read our books! I bet there will be complaints that we didn't give a week or so notice lol

People can blame me, I fucked it all up.

I see you said we had been recently relocated to community. I assume this is a typo? surely you meant 'Were forcefully moved when no one was around and have not been allowed outside since'

This is the first time I've made a thread. It's showing up all highlighted and blue in the list of topics. I don't like it.

There are supposedly almost 10 of us. Quite a lot of people bought the collection and said they were going to join. Now we'll see if they actually do. If not, I'm very happy with our core group right here.

And I actually did give at least a week's notice. Haha. So nobody can complain about anything!

But it's no worries that it got delayed. I needed a bit of a break from things anyways.

I see you said we had been recently relocated to community. I assume this is a typo? surely you meant 'Were forcefully moved when no one was around and have not been allowed outside since'

Ah, yeah. Stupid autocorrect.

For some strange reason this book seems like it will fall somewhere in between Beverly Hills 90210 and Twin Peaks.

Yooooo, we out of the Community ghetto (for now)!

For those of you that don't own Strangers in Paradise but are interested in participating in ComicsGAF's first-ever Book Club, there are multiple relatively-inexpensive ways to get the series. Feel free to PM me or any of the other posters above if you'd like help/suggestions on the best place to buy it.

Also, if anyone decides they'd like to join us but needs to buy the book and wait for it to be delivered, just know that this will take us 3 months to finish, not being able to start on the first day won't be that big of a deal in the long run... at 3 issues a day, 6 days a week, you should be able to get caught up relatively easily.

I think our next book should be Pax Americana. One page per week.

I told myself that after Y: The Last Man, I was done with comics, but Strangers has always interested me. Hmmm.

Just come join us and read. The social nature of what we are doing will make it a memorable experience. I'm more hype for the talking than I am about the actual book.

Read the first 3 issues. Its been many years since I read it and it's interesting seeing the various characters first appearances, Terry's early art and the pace of it all. Will post more tomorrow when we can discuss the contents

I wish there were a good way to read a book that large, some type of illustration showing the best way to read a large book.

Just finished issues #1 - 3 (aka Vol 1):

I'm really liking the story so far, and the cartooning is great. The facial expressions really solidify the mood of the book, and you can infer a hell of a lot about the plot without reading any of the dialogue, which isn't as common as it should be these days. Moore has somehow successfully delivered equal parts feminism and fan service, and I'm interested to see if he can keep that up for 100+ issues.

This book oozes cleverness and creativity... I can't wait to see what's next. On to Vol 2!

I'll try to get more into the plot points and themes with my future posts, since three issues isn't quite enough for me to feel comfortable making broad statements or attempting to analyze the series in depth.

Hey cool idea! I don't post in the Comics OT as I'm pretty out of the loop with recent comics, but I've heard of SiP a lot in the past, so now seems a good time to read it.

I'll see if I can grab it from my local store sometime in the next couple of days, maybe even on the way home from work today.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, sounds interesting. Probably won't be able to join this read-through but I've added it to my Amazon wishlist for a potential future purchase when I might have some money in the distant future. :)

I have no idea where these chapters begin and end lol. I just read up to where it said the end. Fucking comic books man.

Alright lets get things going.

SiP Vol1 (#1-3)

As I stated before i've read SiP years ago, so i'll make sure to never tip my hand of where the story goes (granted its been years so i only remember smatterings of story beats). I only read the comic through TPBs but I must say if someone picked up the first issue back in the day of this series i have no idea how they couldn't immediately put this on their pull list and never stop reading it.

What an amazing content packed first issue! You Introduce 4 of the main characters, immediately flesh them out and provide the proper backstories
- Freddie the horny loser boyfriend
- Francine the nice but doormat, low self esteem character
- Katchoo the childhood friend of Francine who is in love with her but is not returned back in the same way. Passionate, violent, fiery, but has a soft side that only a few get to really see
- David the ultimate "friendzone" character

On top of that the start and end of the Freddie/Francine relationship, and a hook for a great cliffhanger of Katchoo's revenge. That's a hell of a first issue. How many issues would comics take these days to get this much content out, 3? 4 issues? Even the good run of image comics would seem like a whole arc covered in on issue.

Some other things that struck me again is just how Terry Moore has a read on these characters so early and also I get to see how the were before they started to change/grow/etc. In addition this was written and produced in 1993! I won't say its a trailblazer for LGBT stories, but there weren't a ton out there that really touched on it, let alone in the comic book industry. Especially by making it a part of their main characters .

Other things that i had forgotten is how over the top frenzied and crazy it was. Katchoo is almost Ennis like in the extreme parody violence but it works with the art style and it takes this "slice of life" comic and adds a layer of absurdity to it. But at the same time doesn't undercut the characters themselves. Its thrown into the blender and just...works. Kind of like what fauxtrot points out in how Terry blends pin-up style fanservice with feminism. You don't usually see that in the same story but here it somehow works and one doesn't get in the way of the other.

And finally a great staple of Terry's art is he draws women exceptionally well and using realistic proportions, wrinkles, folds, etc but still very pleasing to the eye. Yea he has some fun with certain characters later (and even the one bouncer lady that shows up) but even then its something unique that you don't see often in comics.

Great start, can't wait to dive into it more. Just like when i read it the first time its hard to put down the comic when i start, but i'll do my best to keep it at 3 issues per day to avoid spoilers.

What say you comic-gaf book club on your thoughts?

I think it's interesting that Moore already seems to be setting up a pretty complex love-triangle ... Katchoo loves Francine, Francine loves neither (so far), and David's on the fast track to loving them both.

I agree with gketter... Katchoo waking up and shooting her alarm clock, the neighbors dream, the actualized revenge fantasy, as well as the over-exaggerated minor characters (Katchoo's huge friend, the neighbor couple, the jail-house cop) add an absurdist twist to the book that feels very Garth Ennis or even Hunter S. Thompson-esque. So far it hasn't overshadowed the other qualities of the book, and I'm pretty impressed by how naturally it all feels, when it is in fact quite the balancing act.

I'm here! I'm here!

So um.... how do you tell when an issue ends? Some of the chapter breaks don't seem as obvious as others?

You forgot "tsundere."

It was awesome reading your analyses, fauxtrot and gketter! I don't really have much to say other than what's already been said, but I will say that I enjoyed it immensely! Fantastic slice-of-life that has it's moments of total absurdity but still feels completely rooted in reality due to the great dialogue and characterizations.
It was totally hilarious too.

Also, I really like David as a character. I mean, all the characters are great and equally very well-written, but I really like David.

And lastly, I sort of wish I didn't read all three issues in one sitting. I'm bad at reading more than one or two issues in one sitting, and when I do I get kind of impatient towards the end. Because of that, I didn't get to appreciate that heartwarming ending as much as I should've. For shame.
With that said, the fact that I was able to read three issues in one sitting at all (especially keeping in mind that I haven't been able to read any comics at all for like a week since my mind's been elsewhere and I haven't been able to keep any sort of focus) speaks volumes to how well-written Strangers in Paradise is.

I wish there were a good way to read a book that large, some type of illustration showing the best way to read a large book.

What say you comic-gaf book club on your thoughts?

Completely agree on all points. You were very thorough, so I've got nothing to add.
But yeah, what a fantastic first issue. Perfectly executed.

And in regards to the craziness, it caught me by surprise as well. I wasn't expecting that craziness from this book, but it really adds another dimension to it.

I think it's interesting that Moore already seems to be setting up a pretty complex love-triangle ... Katchoo loves Francine, Francine loves neither (so far), and David's on the fast track to loving them both.

Thompson-esque. So far it hasn't overshadowed the other qualities of the book, and I'm pretty impressed by how naturally it all feels, when it is in fact quite the balancing act.

The minor characters were a definite highlight for me. I love how in just a few panels, Moore completely defined that relationship between the husband and wife neighbors. Husband spying on young female neighbor while wife is in the kitchen chugging whiskey and both are making sure the other doesn't know about their indiscretions. That was too good.
But yeah, the completely ridiculous, caricature-like minor characters really add a lot to the book.

I'm here! I'm here!

So um.... how do you tell when an issue ends? Some of the chapter breaks don't seem as obvious as others?

Every issue had a "To be continued" or "The End" at the end. So just keep an eye out for those.
It would be nice if the omnibus had both page numbers and issue numbers though.

I have a couple of the pocket books. Got a big paycheck coming soon, this will be bought. I need to finish this series.

Awesome! I hope you guys can join us!

Yea! More participation. I'm off to read the next three issues. FYI i have decided to go the digital route for my rereading

The good news it seems is it has the comic book covers between issues. So if you want I can post where the stopping point is.

Fortunately the next three issues ends at the end of the next mini arc of sorts

Ah, nice! Not gonna lie, digital sounds pretty nice. The 1100 page volumes are pretty unwieldy, mostly because they're paperback. You just can't beat that price though.
Also, I'm sure it'll get less awkward to read as we make our way towards the middle of the book. Mostly it's difficult to have 30 pages in one hand and 1070 in the other. Haha

The library has this; I might join in.

Awesome!

Ahhhh! I've forgotten how good SiP is! I knew it was great, but re-reading it again and having to stop at only 3 issues per reading is tough! Plus its killing my interest to work off my pile of random comics from the last couple weeks. Its coming back to me how i read this in the past. I just curled up in bed, put on the tunes and binge read it. When an issue ended I'd just go "more". But! i'll stick with the 3 issues per day plan so i know what the stopping points of plot points are.

I'm also already pulling together thoughts on these issues. Good good stuff

I read all of this title many years ago and no longer have it, so it will be interesting to re-live this.

It was a CBR recommendation and when it was described I was like hmm, I don't know about this. Not sure this is for me. But I gave it a try and was immediately hooked. Wonderful comic.

Oh, just a couple more things!

1) That whole liver thing when Francine had gone crazy was hilarious. In fact, pretty much that whole bit was hilarious.

2) This panel is the most heartwarming thing ever:

I'm glad you're enjoying the re-read so much! I'm really looking forward to reading more too.

Prediction: David ain't gonna be friend-zoned for long! Nice guys don't always finish last in Moore's world.

I only want David to be happy. He just needs to find someone who can appreciate his poems.

Yeah, when I first heard about it, I checked it out and read a few pages and was like "Yeeeah, no." And then on a whim I checked it out again a month or two ago and I was like "How on earth did I not absolutely love this the first time I checked it out?"
