Mumei is my source for books. :p

You can always look through the reading threads. I like to use Goodreads to see what friends and gaffers are reading.

With the monthly updates, I'd also like to post a short, but diverse list of suggestions. I know that one of my problems with completing the movie portion is just finding stuff that'd be interesting. Like I said in the OP, if anyone wants me to highlight a recommendation, PM me!

Adding gaffers on Goodread is a valuable way to gain good sources. I get my book recommendations from Mumei, Tragic, and Pau.

I'm going to bother Pau so much to recommend The Traitor's Heart for people. Readers should know about the Apartheid!

Cool beans. I just visited the website to see what it's all about and I like it. How do you add people for recommendations?

I created an account on Goodreads, but how can I get recommendations from anyone from GAF or in general?

Sounds great! The movies will be no problem, but the books might be a bit of a challenge. I think the most books I ever read in one year was about 20 so I'll have to step it up! Between this and the 52 video games challenge on the gaming boards, I'm really trying to make better use of my free time this year.

Movies

The Guest- Adam Wingard (2014)
Fury- David Ayer (2014)
First Blood- Ted Kotcheff (1982)
The Terminator- James Cameron (1984)
Boyhood- Richard Linklater (2014)
Kingsman: The Secret Service- Matthew Vaughn (2015)

Just wanted to toss a few numbers out there to point out how much this challenge has grown in the past two years. I'm hoping we have an even larger turnout this year.

2013
  • 18 Members Finished
  • 2,044 Total Books
  • 3,922 Total Movies

2014
  • 26 Members Finished
  • 3,621 Total Books
  • 7,510 Total Movies

I think I did the round up in 2012. And seven of us finished. It'll be in that thread somewhere at the end.

Mumei added like 20 books to my reading list in the institutional racism topic, so this year will be my CIVIL RIGHTS reading year apparently lol

Anyway I'm in, I'll try to keep track. One year I signed up and I definitely read 50 books, but I forgot about the topic so didn't keep track.

I think I did the round up in 2012. And seven of us finished. It'll be in that thread somewhere at the end.

I need to look back into that thread, thanks for the reminder.

Is there a list of good SciFi books someone can link me to? Thanks.

I suggest joining the monthly threads. Maklershed has a very comprehensive list of links that cover book recommendations. We also all share what we're enjoying in there, and some of us read mainly science fiction and fantasy.

Since Cyan did the format so well, "borrowing" it. *ahem* Thanks for doing this, Pau and tragicomedy!

Books
  1. Cast No Shadow (Star Trek: TOS, 360 pages) (2011) - ★★★★★ (Jan. 3, 2015)
I'm a sucker for Star Trek VI stuff. Love the movie, and this book continues on the story. Takes place 7 years after the movie and focuses on
Valeris. Examines her inner dealings and brings her to face the further pieces of the Gorkon conspiracy still in play
. Really does the story well. It reminds me of the "Reign in Hell" series focused on Khan's time on Ceti Alpha V with how that series explains Khan's motivations, rationalizations, and descent into the madness of Star Trek II. Usually avoid TOS books, but the Star Trek VI tie got me to buy it. Glad I did. :D
  2. Hunger Games (374 pages) (2009) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 6, 2015)
This one was weird. Have seen the movie several times, so knew what was going on. The writing style is from the first-person perspective, though, so you only see what Katniss sees. It's almost like reading a diary (e.g. innermost thoughts discussed) without the format of a diary. You also necessarily do not see the things taking place outside of Katniss's field-of-view. e.g.
no rioting in District 11 after Rue's death (but loved the bread present indicating their appreciation), no discussions between Snow and the head gamemaker (will have to wait for the second book to see if he dies like in the movie)
On the plus side, as with most movies based on books, the book fleshes out a lot more of the reasoning behind "Huh?" on-screen actions. e.g.
Good conversation with Thresh showing why he let her live, why Cato had to be shot in the hand
*big spoiler, if you haven't read the book*
Really shocking difference at the end with the dogs ACTUALLY BEING FORMED OUT OF THE OTHER SLAIN TRIBUTES, INCLUDING RUE! :O
If I hadn't seen the movie, probably wouldn't have cared so much about all of it, but in this case (like with LOTR) having seen the movie before reading the book really adds to the book, in my opinion. The missing star is because of the first-person view necessarily keeping certain book staples that I like (e.g. omniscient knowing of others' thoughts and distant actions) unavailable, and because I didn't really like reading someone's diary. At least Katniss was a likeable person in thoughts and deeds. Would've hated to read a first-person account of Cato. o_O
Two books in the first week. Nice! :D
  3. Hunger Games: Catching Fire (389 pages) (2010) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 9, 2015)
Same general comments as Hunger Games as to the writing style and technical nature of the book. Interesting particularly to note the differences between the book and the movie, of which there are not a great deal. Obviously, details are expounded upon more fully in the text, but pretty much every significant element in the book was repeated in the movie. Guess that's to say that the movie did the book justice. Only thing missing story-wise (really)
were the two escaped District 8 characters, Bonnie and Twill, hinting at a larger push for "The Mockingjay" than Katniss was aware of earthbound in District 12
. And of course, as before, the movie allowed more fuller expository of the overall situation, since it was not restricted to Katniss's first-person account. For Mockingjay, I think I'll wait until the last movie comes out before reading the book. Watching the movie first in this series is really helping the book out, in my opinion.
  4. Oliver Twist (264 pages) (1837) - ★★★★★ (Jan. 20, 2015)
This book only registered at 264 pages, but it was longer than the 350+ pages books I've read so far this year. Crazy! Reading it early on, the writing style reminded me of Peter David (current author, lots of Star Trek stuff) whose writing style I love. I'm now thinking Peter David's style is probably inspired by Charles Dickens from Oliver Twist. Ha! The chapter titles doing more than denoting the passage of sections of prose, actually provide a summary of the chapter they precede. This can result in not a little cheering or groaning as twists in the story are foreshadowed slightly. Amazing ending for the book, and some insane "Twist"s in the story, that's for dang sure! Highly recommended!
Peter David wrote a current novel specifically about the Artful Dodger (Jack Dawkins), which precipitated this book's reading. Looking forward to that one even moreso now. :)
  5. Artful: A Novel (277 pages) (2014) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 27, 2015)
Once again, I am struck by just how much stinking longer Oliver Twist was than this book that "supposedly" had more pages! *ahem* Anyways, really great book focusing on The Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist, who was really a much more interesting fellow than that snivelling child Oliver, huh? ;) Went into this expecting a normal tale following onto Oliver Twist focused on the exploits and continued journey of Artful. While most of that expectation was correct, the "normal" part of it was anything but! (Coming from Peter David, it shouldn't have been a surprise. Love his books, but he loves to throw you for loops!) Big-time spoiler:
Vampyres are taking over England and threatening the future Queen Victoria, and only The Artful and company (with a lot of cameos from Oliver Twist) can save the day! (In retrospect, maybe vampyres shouldn't have been too surprising considering he wrote the "Pulling up Stakes" series. :p )
Great book. Not too long, and if you liked Oliver Twist and don't mind throwing things for a loop, I highly recommend this book, as well! :D
  6. Cold and Broken Hallelujah (Long Beach Homicide series) (283 pages) (2014) - ★★☆☆☆ (Jan. 31, 2015)
Book seemed to be all wrapped up in the first 50 pages, then it drug on for ~100 pages going nowhere only to magically turn into something that made the dragging on pages supposedly meaningful. Then everything came tied together with a pretty bow in the last 20 pages. Miraculous. :|
First non-purposeful book (e.g. not tied to a series or some other metadata-type reason for reading it) I've read in a long time, and this isn't a good start. :p Got it for free with the Amazon Prime free book (out of a group) of the month bonus. Oh, well. Some people obviously like it according to the Amazon book reviews, but I guess it just wasn't for me!
  7. The Klingon Art of War (qeS'a) (160 pages) (2014) - ★★★★★ (Feb. 3, 2015)
Keith R. A. DeCandido is such a good Star Trek writer. Loved his Klingon-focused books, and this one goes right along with that trend. This book covers the 10 precepts handed down from Kahless (ancient Klingon who formalized the Klingon honor code in Star Trek and is sort of divine) including examples and discussion by K'Ratak (famous Klingon author). Some of the examples are from the movies, shows, books, but some is brand new, and reviewing even the known experiences in light of the qeS'a' is an enlightening experience. Love how the stuff ties together. ;) The book itself is extremely good quality. Hardback, thick stock, nice formatting, and really interesting pictures at the beginning of each precept discussion. Good book to pick up for Star Trek Klingon fans! :D
  8. Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone (309 pages) (1998) - ★★★★★ (Feb. 7, 2015)
As with Hunger Games (and LOTR), having watched the movies first really made the book that much more enjoyable. It's shocking how much foreshadowing is done of way later events in the series all in this first book!
Talk of pure bloods vs. mud bloods, first mention of Hagrid's expulsion, mention of Sirius Black, etc.
These are the kinds of things that show up in a second reading of a book series, but having seen the movies first, they're showing up in the first reading. A very nice treat. :) The book itself was great. No ruddy diary-type nonsense like with Hunger Games :)P). Obviously written for younger readers, but can still appreciate it for what it is. Also does a good job of trying to fit the wizarding world's existence in with the real world stuff, unlike Hunger Games, where you're just thrown into this setup that makes no sense (even after reading the book) of why it came to be this way. Missed that in books. One of the best examples I've ever read of this is "The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh" where it fits in the entire Eugenics Wars to real world history in the 60s-90s. This isn't anything near that complex, but still glad they attempted to explain it even if the explanation was "it's magic." ;)
  9. Star Trek Mirror Universe: Rise Like Lions (401 pages) (2011) - ★★★★★ (Feb. 10, 2015)
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I was actually considering knocking it down to 4 stars due to some too convenient major actions in the first half of the book, but it more than made up for them by the end. This book essentially finishes the Mirror Universe setup in Star Trek TOS episode "Mirror, Mirror" and continued in Star Trek DS9 episodes. You really need to read the other Mirror Universe books that are separate from the shows to understand why all the players are where they are, but it's great to have a remarkable "conclusion" to the story like this. Full of intrigue and twists. Really great for a Star Trek fan.
It also leaves the newly christened Mirror Universe reality with a huge jumping off point into future books based on the mainline reality that'll be very interesting to see develop, since all the things and people are not the same in the Mirror reality as in the mainline one.
Highly, highly recommended (if you're caught up on the Mirror Universe shows and books, and if you're not, highly recommend doing so, if you're a Star Trek fan. :) )!
It's a bit surreal (and more than a bit telling) when the author plugs an upcoming Star Trek: TNG trilogy set for 2012, and I can look over onto my shelf and see it waiting there down the queue. :p

  55. Q are Cordially Invited... (eBook, est. 91 pages) (2014) - ★★★☆☆ (Feb. 21, 2015)
Really more like 3.5 stars, and it is a really fun, short story surrounding Picard and Crusher's "real" wedding day, starring Q
    and Q
! Basic Star Trek: TNG story. Nothing too complex. Just a fun romp exploring a bit of Picard, Crusher, and
    Vash
as they have to extricate themselves from another uninvited trip from Q. Turns out that Q can actually be
    thoughtful
by the end of the book, so it's probably worth reading just for that!
Q himself would be appalled, I'm sure. :p

    Malediction (64 pages) (2014) - ★★★★☆ (November 5, 2015)
Had totally missed the connection to BC in Hunter's Trail. Glad this book took the time to connect the dots and show more of how L.A. Old World is progressing after Hunter's Trail!

Movies
  1. I, Frankenstein (2014) - ★★★☆☆ (Jan. 2, 2015)
Originally was really against this one as it had almost nothing to do with Frankenstein (
It's really about a hidden war between gargoyles (sub-angels?!?) and demons
, which was dumb to me in a movie called Frankenstein), but came to accept it as just a fun, action movie and try to ignore any attempts to tie it to a source material. Also really like Aaron Eckhart ever since seeing "Thank You For Smoking," so it was fun to see him be an action protagonist for a change.
  2. Chinese Zodiac (2012) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 4, 2015)
Good Jackie Chan movie. 'Bout sums it up! (Movies is definitely going to be easier to hit. Gotta devote serious time to books.)
  3. Great Expectations (2012) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 8, 2015)
I debated on whether to give this 3 or 5 stars. Really turns on
the belief of if Estella truly can empathize with Pip at the end of the movie or if she's still an emotion incapable psychopath and lying to him, too. If she can feel emotion now, then it's a great ending and happiness for Pip and Co. going forward. If she's still the emotion incapable psychopath, then Pip is in for Hell going forward. This has a personal emphasis, too, having been previously married to a psychopath and lived in false hope for years, so it's difficult to separate that pain and bretayal from Pip's position in the movie. :/
Decided on a compromise of 4 stars, then. The movie is done well. I vaguely recall having read (at least part of) Great Expectations in school, but don't recall it specifically. Therefore, the movie was a bit of an unknown for me, which made the ending unexpected. :)
  4. Jane Eyre (2011) - ★★★☆☆ (Jan. 14, 2015)
What I recall from reading this book back in High School was that it was drearily long, hard to follow, and seemed to have 15 pages gaps between replies of a conversation. Don't recall a ton of details, though. Having watched the movie, it makes more sense and also seems to explain the issues I had with the book (i.e. easier to understand that a flashback is a flashback when the characters/environment change rather than just jumping into a past memory with no orientation). Good movie exploring the winds of a young woman's heart, though.
No, I'm not going back to re-read the book now. :p
  5. Blackhat (2015) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 17, 2015)
Good movie with George Kirk/Thor as the hero. Liked the vicarious living of someone who was a star at MIT (always wanted to go after undergraduate, but life got in the way), and oh, the nice bod would be nice, too. :p In reality, someone who is that much a star at computers in the real world probably wouldn't have the time to devote to toning their body that way. But then that's why we have movies. :p
  6. Selma (2015) - ★★★★★ (Jan. 19, 2015)
Took some younger family to see Selma, because I felt it important for them to see some of how life was back then. Don't expect them to "get" all of it but osmosis ... As a side note, I stay to the end of the credits in almost 100% of the movies I go see. (I paid for watching the movie, I'm going to watch all of it.) Outside of Marvel movies, I'm usually about the only one left in theatre at the end, though. In this movie, even though there's nothing secret at the end, there was a good dozen people still in the theatre all the way through. I considered it a show of respect for the subject matter, and I was rejoiced to see it. :)
  7. The Interview (2014) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 24, 2015)
This was a majorly messed up movie about tons of crap, but it just had me shaking my head in laughing/disbelief throughout. :lol I think a good snapshot of the overall movie is had in the first moments with the little girl singing the North Korean national anthem before going way off on a debasing tangent. Man!
  8. Black or White (2015) - ★★★★☆ (Jan. 31, 2015)
This movie did a really good job with the subject matter (mixed heritage granddaughter and the custody struggle between white granddad and black grandmom). It didn't portray either side of the racial portion of the concern as 100% good or bad, but showed that everyone's got flaws. Really liked the speech by Kevin Costner on the witness stand toward the end of the movie, too (even if he did undercut himself a bit toward the end of it with a comment). Could've easily been a real divisive movie if handled differently, but I think those involved handled it really, really well!
  9. The War of the Worlds (1953) - ★★☆☆☆ (Feb. 10, 2015)
Was this the "Classic" version? Seemed kind of basic. One dimensional love story grown out of the environment of Martians invading Earth. Special effects seemed kind of good for 1953, though. Was also good to hear Seti I (Sir Cedric Hardwicke) doing the narration.

I need to look back into that thread, thanks for the reminder.

I suggest joining the monthly threads. Maklershed has a very comprehensive list of links that cover book recommendations. We also all share what we're enjoying in there, and some of us read mainly science fiction and fantasy.

Thanks for the heads up. I will be joining those threads as well.
