Really terrible. It's okay to be angry and offended when someone makes fun of your religion. But bullying people and killing them. Fuck that. If you can't understand why that's NOT acceptable. Why it's not acceptable to be religious in a society with a variety of people and not accept freedom of speech, or not enacting violence on anyone who says something you don't agree with.

What disturbs me, is not just the extremists. But those that actually view this as the "just" or something the writers brought upon themselves. Those that are religious, who think what they were doing was blasphemous, therefore their death was somehow brought on by their sins. Even if you absolutely think what they are doing is a mortal sin, and extremely offensive, you should not support someone killing or enacting violence on someone. Apart of living in a society with law and order, is living with diverse people that all don't share the same views. Respecting the laws, and basic human rights.

Not just a bounty, a fatwa - which is an Islamic law decree against him, and his life - I think his view is more understandable given that. (Not that I agree with him)

Internal CNN memo: 'We are not at this time showing the Charlie Hebdo cartoons'

CNN is not showing detailed images of cartoons from the Charlie Hebdo magazine that could be viewed as offensive to Muslims, CNN senior editorial director Richard Griffiths said in a message sent to CNN staff Wednesday afternoon.

Griffiths' email:

Although we are not at this time showing the Charlie Hebdo cartoons of the Prophet considered offensive by many Muslims, platforms are encouraged to verbally describe the cartoons in detail. This is key to understanding the nature of the attack on the magazine and the tension between free expression and respect for religion.

Video or stills of street protests showing Parisians holding up copies of the offensive cartoons, if shot wide, are also OK. Avoid close-ups of the cartoons that make them clearly legible.

It's also OK to show most of the protest cartoons making the rounds online, though care should be taken to avoid examples that include within them detailed depictions of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons.

Griffiths' memo comes after several news organizations came under fire for censoring various Charlie Hebdo cartoons that depict Muhammad. The Associated Press, The New York Daily News and The Telegraph were among those that blurred or cropped photos of the covers.

UPDATE (3:40 pm): A CNN spokesperson says in an email they are continuously discussing how to portray the images on the network:

As this distressing story continues to evolve we are actively discussing the best way of addressing the key issues and images across all of our platforms. Those conversations will continue throughout the day and beyond as the story develops.

CNN and places like the Time's never would have shown them, its not a change of policy. I don't think they're obligated because of this shooting.

I can understand that the longer one has practiced religion the more offended and insecure one might be when someone shows disrespect for it or shows a weakspot in the religion's beliefs. It is similar to the sunken cost fallacy or escalation of commitment dilemma.
I would be pissed too if I invested months or years and part of my brain praying to something and see people questioning it or even making fun of the irrationality of it all, but that is something a religious believer has to deal with without resorting to verbal or physical violence. So yes of course religions deserve our fearless disrespect.
Religions are theories and like everything else should be open to falsifiablity. If they refuse to be so they open themselves up for disrespect and that should be fearless.

Not a direct equivalent of "go fuck yourself", it's more like "go get fucked". There really isn't any equivalent of go fuck yourself in french.

Do you even know what a Fatwa is. It's a non-binding statement, which is a simple legal opinion of an individual scholar. It's hilarious trying to see people talking about things they have no freaking clue about.

Well it's worse than that in a way. By treating these cartoons like this they are elevating the drawings the same level of offensiveness that the extremists view them with.

Will CNN stop showing female anchors with bare legs because that's offensive to some group of people too?

It is? They times and places like CNN self-censor themselves its the typical broadsheet vs tabloid divide, journalism is a 'stuffy profession' in the Anglophone world, especially the New World and Australia. They never would show this or other works deemed offensive. Its not their purpose. People can choose not to show certain things.

This isn't like they were in the habit of showing these type of cartoons then stopped out of fear. They never did and aren't changing because of a terrorist act.

Things like comedy central not showing Muhammad when they had in the past fit the 'cowardly' description moreso

Yeah sorry, I was being ironic. Probably not the best time and place for it. Gotta remember that sarcasm doesn't work on the internet most of the time.

But yeah, of course I know who Rushdie is. I've read a couple of his books too. Not Satanic Verses, but a couple of other ones. He's a great writer.
