Retronauts Podcast Thread

I hated the Valis episode, mainly because of Shane "Um, Actually" Bettenhausen and Christian "I'm going to ignore what you just asked me and talk for 5 minutes about something else" Nutt. Having them both on the show together turned the whole thing into a mess.

The Majora episode was similarly unfocused. I feel like the game wasn't even really talked about before it was time to go. It seems like "micro" episodes that aren't personal experience stories (Like the awesome TI microcomputer episode) just don't work.

I probably should have made it clear that the Majora's Micro was really intended to be "The Case for Majora's Mask" rather than a proper podcast about the entire game. Though I will say you should adjust your expectations for the off weeks, since the limited scope of each episode means that we can't go into as much depth as we can with the 90-minute ones.

But we should get back to the REAL point of this thread: discussing the proper pronunciation of "anime." PROTIP: It doesn't actually matter!

Felt the exact opposite. Loved hearing both of those guys. They are both simultaneously passionate and knowledgeable about what they talk about, and as opposed to many of the modern retronauts episodes, didn't just sound like a rundown of the Wikipedia page of Game X. Hope Shane and Christian are invited back on soon.

I encourage you guys to keep experimenting with them. I'm a big fan of the 2 ones Jeremy did- tightly scripted, music in the background, more personal stories, ect, They feel different from the normal episodes, instead of coming across as shortened episodes like Majora's Mask did.

Bob, I think the Majora's mask micro wasn't as good because it felt like you wanted it to be a "real" longer episode, but you had in mind that this should be a shorter one.

Maybe you should try something like Jeremy's? I don't mean the same personal anecdote-history lesson approach (those are great, by the way), but something recorded by yourself while not in the studio with other persons.

We've been warned that the off weeks would be experiments, so maybe you should...experiment more?

Be assured that if we hate it, you'll know it :p

I'm including five seconds of the brown note in my episodes every time the word "Wikipedia" is mentioned in this thread

And I shall be forever shamed as "that guy who argued on the pronunciation of anime" in this thread.

Oh well. I still love you guys.

This. I have no idea what the hell Valis is but I found the episode to be midly entertaining because of Shane and Christian and how in depth they get. Reminded me of the Phantasy Star episode just not as good.

Even talking about one of his favorite games Bob found a way to turn it into a brief checklist and move on podcast. I know it was a micro episode but you can still go in depth about a game in 30 minutes.

Maybe do Majora's Mask AFTER the new version comes out so more people can be experienced with the game. I mean it's 2 months away... What's the friggin' rush?

I actually like all of the Micro episodes so far. The only suggestion I'd add would be to split the difference time wise for the episodes. 15 minutes is probably the perfect amount of time to lightly cover most topics.

That episode was recorded well before MM 3DS was announced.

But the Micro episodes are supposed to be brief and breezy--they're bonus content at best, superfluous at worst. Adjust your expectations or skip them entirely. We still have the main episodes for in-depth discussions.

Did you listen to the entire thank you episode in the spirit of completionism?

Perhaps I should change what I said from the spirit of completionism to the spirit of preservation. I have all the podcasts downloaded, BUT I did not listen to the entire thank you episode. I am now ashamed.

SUPER early new episode for Patreons

After T-frog said the PS2 wasn't retro, I was surprised to see a DS episode! Might be the first one I actually listen to early because I can't wait to see Kat and Jeremy (who seemingly only reviewed DS games at 1up in my memory) do with the episode

I can't use Patreon due to my bank flagging it as suspicious every time I try so I'm a little sad to see three micro episodes in a row :(

Mario Kart Wii is the best selling Mario Kart game. And if we're talking games that were never packed in, I think WiiPlay is the best selling game of the past 10 years. Although that was based entirely on the controller.

Edit: I think part of the episode was cut off. At around 52 minutes in, Jeremy says "lets take a break" then it suddenly cuts to Henry mid sentence.

Bob I just finished listening to the Chun Li episode (which was awesome, I kept cracking up on the walk home from work) and you really need to go watch Zoolander, like, right away.

Haha agreed!

Also I listened to the Zillion episode again last night, it might just be the best episode of any Retronauts.

Finally broke down and supported them on patreon cause I needed my fix 2 nights ago. Luckily for them I like them enough to let it go for the foreseeable future. I also want me some stickers!

Just listened to the regrettable purchases episode. I have to admit that, growing up, I was really lucky - that, or Nintendo Power helped point me in the right direction a lot.

I was basically "guaranteed" a game for Christmas each year, and I would sometimes get one for my birthday. My SNES collection was great and had enough replayability to get me through to the next game: SMW, EB, FFVI, SM, and so on. Buying games myself basically didn't happen until I got a job as a teenager, because I only got $2 for allowance and that was only if my dad happened to have the $2 on him on Friday (allowance day).

So one day I went to a friend's house and he had The Magical Quest (Starring Mickey Mouse) and it seemed awesome. We got to the fourth level (the mountains) before I had to go home and I just had to have that game. I had something like $25 and my younger brother had enough to cover the rest of the game, so I talked him into getting it with me, then I had to beg my mom to drive us 45 or so minutes to the nearest store that sold games - Walmart. We lived in the middle of nowhere.

The entire trip was awful in and of itself, mostly because my mom locked her keys in the car and we had to wait for AAA and by the time we got home it was past our bedtime so we couldn't even play the game. But the next morning I got up early and started playing it... only to beat it about an hour or so later. Turns out that there were only five levels in the game so I had already seen almost all of it.

I was so embarrassed about wasting everyone's time and money that I didn't complain about it once. I couldn't admit my mistake. I even replayed it a few times just so I could feel like I got my money's worth out of it.

(I don't even like to think about all the shitty games I've bought due to impulse or boredom in my adult years.)

sorry if it's answered before. but whats the protocol on taking about patreon episodes before they're released to everyone. ?

Ray has put up the final issue of his midzine, Scroll:
SCROLL 12: Introducing MSX

$4.99 for the PDF (via direct purchase or Magcloud), $22.99* for the Print copy (via Magcloud), and there's three cover variants (Blue, Red, Green).

*Note about the Print price (since this inevitably comes up): Magcloud takes a cut of 20 cents per page, and this double-sized issue comes in at 104 pages, so only about $2.19 of the Print version's price goes to Ray.

Bought it. I've loved every issue of SCROLL, but I feel Ray is being short-sighted to say this is definitively the "final issue". I know because of having a full-time job now, plus doing Retronauts, PLUS doing No More Whoppers, he thinks he won't have time to do another issue. But it's not like Scroll was coming out regularly anyway, I don't see it being an issue to put it aside and start it back up again when it suits him.

Man, that Telenet episode was fantastic. The best episode of Retronauts in at least 4 years. Just awesome having Shane, Jeremy and Christian together brought back the feels.

As someone who was the local 'nut' that bought all the Valis and Renovation/Wolf Team games back on the Genesis and Sega CD in the day, great job guys.

I still have a soft spot for Granada to this day. :)

This week's episode is a retrospective on the Nintendo DS! It's nearly two hours, and good God damn it's great. That system... man, it had so many good games. I still play it all the time, even ten years later. Hell, I ordered a spare battery from Nintendo in preparation for the eventuality that the one that's currently in my DS Lite will cease to recharge.

At the end of the episode, each of the hosts lists three of their personal favorite DS games, and I won't spoil those here. But I would like to contribute mine:

3) Brain Age - I personally didn't play this very much, but it was the game that got my parents to actually try playing a videogame for the first time in my entire life. I was home for the holidays, and my dad was playing Brain Age in the kitchen downstairs. How did I know? Well, I could hear him screaming, "BLUE! BLUE! BLUE, GODDAMMIT!".

2) Bombarman Land Touch - The actual Bomberman Land portion of the game is something I've never played-- not once, ever. This one got countless hours of my time because of the Bomberman Classic mode, in which you can play classic Bomberman with every possible modifier imaginable with up to eight other players (even if only one person actually owns the game). I was at PAX once, and we were waiting in the massive queue line to get into the opening keynote. They had a giant TV screen that everyone could see, and if you sent a text message to a given five-digit number, your text would be displayed on the screen. So I sent a message that said, "If you have a DS, turn it on and set it to Download Play mode for Bomberman action!". Almost immediately I had eight players ready to go.

1) Retro Game Challenge - I initially picked this up because I had heard that it contained some Easter egg nods to old-school EGM writers. I still play it every time I fly anywhere. The games that are contained within Retro Game Challenge are so amazingly good, and there are several of them, each one in a different genre than the others. Sometimes I wonder if I've gotten more value out of this game than any other that I've ever purchased.

Mine are:

1: Ouendan
2: Devil Survivor 1 and 2
3. Ouendan 2

I actually killed the screen my wife's DS Phat playing Ouendan, but fortunately it was under warranty at Best Buy so she was able to swap it for a DS Lite. Then I got the Zelda DS so I could play Ouendan 1 and 2 on my own system. I don't even like Zelda games, but it was a Black Friday deal I couldn't turn down.

If I was to make a DS list in their style(3 favorites, 2 underrated), it would be as follows:

Favorites
1. Pokémon Diamond: I played this after being away from Pokémon since the original gold and silver. With the combination of the new animated sprites, 2.5D visuals, all the new monsters and online play, I sunk about 200 hours into this game. Truly fantastic.
2. Final Fantasy: The 4 heroes of Light: I went into this with very little expectations, as there was little press on it, and it's now one of my favorite RPG's ever. I love how armor changes your appearance but you can almost infinitely upgrade a piece if you like the way it looks on you, I love the BP focused battle system so much I'm now disappointed when an RPG uses a generic MP system, and I love the pop-up book visual style. With the exception of the auto targeting, it's like someone crafted exactly the kind of RPG I would make(If I had he ability and talent). If you like Bravely Default, you need to play this.
3. Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box: I like all the Layton games, but especially this one due to the ending. It really drives home how Layton games are crafted as these elaborate grand mysteries when the truth of the story is really about simple human relationships. I've never cried playing a game, but the ending of this got me really close.

Underrated
1.Digimon World DS: Barring the new digimon which is import only so I can't comment, this is the best digimon game. Nothing spectacular, but extremely competent.
2.Summon Night: Twin Age: A rpg based entirely around the touchscreen, and it actually plays pretty well. Just ignore the plot, it's generic anime.

Loved the DS episode! I have such an awesome collection of DS games, several of which I never got around to actually playing. My three:

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Yeah, it's not the original. But that's okay. There's plenty of stuff to do, there are tons of jobs and species combinations, some pretty cool hidden characters, decent challenge if you don't try to break the game, and it's nice to look at.

Mario Kart DS: It had what I've always wanted in a Mario Kart game (or a Mario platformer for that matter): random stage selection. You had to go into single race mode, but you could set it for 99 races. It'd randomly pick a track from any cup. Kept the game fresh!

Castlevania: Any one of them depending on my mood. I played Dawn of Sorrow the most, but I think I had the most fun with Order of Ecclesia.

the ds feels really modern to me still even if it's quite old. it feels like the start of the tablet and smartphone game stuff that's everywhere, whereas the gba feels like from another world. even the wii feels older because pointer controls are dead these days.

excellent discussion though, really enjoyed it

What a fantastic episode! I think the DS and Wii were both just magical, especially in those initial months of playing them.

I still remember importing the navy blue DS Lite in the summer of 2006, along with Ouendan, Band Brothers, and some 4-player fighting game. It was beautiful, and I had never been so entranced by the games. Ace Attorney, Canvas Curse, and Dawn of Sorrow soon followed. What a great time to be into videogames.

I never regretted buying games as a kid because I barely ever got any. For me it was rental all the way. The only games I owned were SMB/DH, SMB3, SMW, and ALTTP. And I definitely did not regret any of them. Didn't really feel the need to own more than that. I went full PC gaming after the SNES, and only came back to consoles at adulthood.

EDIT: No wait I remember regretting a DOS game that I never successfully ran on my family home computer at the time. DOS gaming was so much fun!

It's not like Retronauts is a story or anything, so I don't see why that could be a problem. There are no "spoilers" to watch out for.
