In the west, it's tradition not to wear such muslim clothing but no one is going to create a problem out of it if they decide to wear. Why should Michelle then be forced to adhere to their customs if she doesn't want to? It goes both ways.

It would go both way if western values were universal, which they aren't. What you want is forcing your culture to other countries, and that's wrong.
I don't agree with some rules in many countries, but if I go to a given country, I follow the local rules, and wouldn't consider "if I can do it in my country, I should be able to do it in yours" as a valid argument.
Which is also a reason why I don't intend to visit Saudi Arabia anytime soon...

But covering one's head is not required for foreigners, and some Western women choose to forego the headscarf while in Saudi Arabia.]

Well in that case, no issue then. If she doesn't have to, there's no reason to complain if she doesn't wear one.

First of all, this thread has indicated multiple times that it is not a rule. It is a custom. And customs are just that, something which is generally followed but not required. And as she is a foreign woman, she especially should have the choice to wear it or not.

its not the official religion, its one of the 5 recognised religion along with Christian, Protestant, Budha and Hindu

also due to the above, people that don't practice one of the five religion will just put Islam on their ID card which inflate the % of Muslim here

Six, you forgot Confucianism.

isn't this that shit ass country that when a woman is raped she is charged for it because she is the one that tempted the man with her beauty?
Yes. It's also a country where if world leaders don't suck dicks of the royal family once a month...price of petrol goes up worldwide.

Personally, I'm uncomfortable with the idea of women choosing how to dress themselves anywhere, not just Saudi Arabia. How am I to govern my impure thoughts when women can show their hair or skin whenever they wish? The difference between my thinking "Here is a fair young lady" and "I've got something for her sweet ass" is nothing more or less than the presence of a headscarf.

Women, please take responsibility for my private thoughts and urges.

Indonesia is not a muslim country

LOL. Indonesia is over 80% Muslim. Even the America is secular doesn't mean some people don't regard it as a Christian nation.

Right, but we had no thread about her wearing the hijab in Indonesia. I think that the only reason we are taking notice is because of the decision not to wear it in one place when she showed no objections to wearing it in another.

At first I thought they would object regardless but then I remember Hilary went to Saudi Arabia without a scarf and there wasn't any controversy over it.

Are these supposed to be good things?

American isn't officially a Christian nation, but with the number of Christians here and historically how well they have done in influencing (and ruining) government I would say we certainly are a nation of Christians.

1,500 tweets is a backlash? that hashtag isn't even trending in Saudi Arabia.

there were way more tweets about Obama's entourage blocking one of the main streets.

hell, many of those tweets aren't even against it, and the ones that are are more about why do it in Indonesia but not in Saudi and was it an intentional slight?

From Wikipedia so this might be false but:

Sounds like a (absolutely fucking ridiculous) requirement to me

How can a sane individual not throw the Quran in the trash after reading that excerpt. Talk about out-dated - don't worry women, you can show your body to castrated males and to your slaves!

You go girl! Saudi's should consider themselves lucky Michelle graced their 14th Century barbaric nation with her presence.

Damn i can see why people from the middle east really dont feel welcome on this forum. While im not a huge fan of Saudi, these kind of posts really cant make anyone from the middle east feel welcome.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Didn't Selena Gomez get hate for cultural appropriation for wearing one? lol

I'm pretty sure the only thing about Selena Gomez recently that fits this bill is when she showed her ankle at a mosque in Abu Dhabi which is seen as disrespectful. I don't think she ever got hate for cultural appropriation for wearing a hijab.

Yeah this kinda seems disrespectful considering they were there to pay their respects to the guy and she wore one in Indonesia.

Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Indonesia, Dubai, Egypt, Syria, Jordan etc... You could also say Turkey even though it's not a muslim country per se.

How is "Turkey not a muslim country per se"? it has more mosques than anywhere else on the planet, the government builds mosques, they just banned facebook pages that insult islam, 99.8% of the population are muslims, mandatory religious education for muslim children (which happens to be nearly all the children), the President has taken the Putin route of going from Prime Minister to President so he maintains his control of the country, alcohol sales have been restricted recently, the presidents support of ISIS...

anyway i could go on, but long story short, they may say they are secular, but Turkey is anything but.

Those who torment and police women shouldn't feel comfortable here or anywhere else.

She is visiting a Muslim land, only an ignorant fool disregards the traditions of the people in whose land they are in.

People operating within diplomatic circles should be aware of this.

then they should'nt host people from other countries she's just a guest not moving in

Boss move Michelle , and kudos on visiting people who were jailed for having church in their home while over there as well.
