the writing and characters in Mass Effect 2 was poor. I imagine most people like it because the men are deep and brooding (wrex, garrus), and if you speak to a girl more than 3 times they were sleep with you.

Weird comparison. Anyway, I liked UC2 very much, but ME2 is my GOAT so that. Because Mordin, Garrus, Femshep and the suicide mission and so many other things. It's my go to game when I want to replay something.

Uncharted 2 no contest, ME2 was on my top 3 disappointing games of last generation Along side Uncharted 3 and Ninja Gaiden 3. I thought ME2 would be ME1 with better shooting and RPG mechanics and more levels like Feros, Noveria, Virmire and ilos but what I got was Recruiting simulator with retarded terminator for final boss

Yeah, just like people only like the Uncharted games because they wish Drake and Sully were a couple or they fancy Chloe. Seriously what a silly comment. Both are excellent games in various ways.

Mass Effect 2

Uncharted 2 was pretty good but at the end of the day it's quite a restrained experience. I like character creation, decision making and character interaction.

I've said it before here but I've always thought of Mass Effect 2 as "Oceans' Eleven in Space." I loved the idea of putting together a team for a crazy suicide mission and what that meant for the pacing of the game.

And let's be honest, graded for third person combat, Uncharted is a C- and Mass Effect 2 is a B+

So for me ME2 is better in almost every area but spectacle and even then the final mission is pushing for it.

Ha Ha this description of ME is hilarious and true!

Mass Effect 2, no question.

Replayable, multiple varied characters to chat up and interact, an UTTERLY FANTASTIC last level (well, the final boss fight notwithstanding); really, Suicide Mission is probably one of the best last level rush of all time; it's such a great feeling storming the Collector Base and the way people could get killed if you don't do it right... that shit was intense... especially if you play in Insanity and Harbinger possessing mooks left and right.

The Long Walk.... when you walk with a biotic bubble, man........., that was awesome too, and very intense.

U2 was a fantastic experience, no doubt, but it's a one time done deal. I found no reason to revisit that game after I finished with it, unlike ME2 with its multiple class, powers, renegade/paragon path, etc etc.

Mass Effect 2 for sure.

I've never been a big fan of the straight up set piece shooters outside of Half Life (especially 3rd person shooters, Gears games are another that I always buy but never feel much for). The Uncharted universe has never had much intrigue for me and I didn't really like the actual shooting or that much.

Mass Effect 2 at least had all kinds of cool class powers to mix things up (god damn vanguard charge is so satisfying), plus it's an awesome sci-fi universe where you can play as an ass hole or anyway else you want to. It introduced some legendary characters (Mordin, Illusive Man most notably). The Story felt really pointless in the grand scheme of the Mass Effect universe and it kind of ruined the protean mystique but the vignette approach definitely had some great missions.

Completely different games. They scratch a different itch and it is stupid to directly compare them. Even just looking at story, ME2 is an epic space Saga, whereas Uc2 is non-stop Indiana Jones action.

Mordin was probably my favorite

I suppose this could be a subject for another thread, but there's this common misconception that replayability revolves around games having more stuff to collect or do, or having branching or different choices in story options etc on alternative play throughs, and whilst that can be true, it's not necessarily a requirement. A really fun game, with diversity in approach (be in combat options, ways to tackle levels etc), engrossing gameplay, story, world or characters, a multitude of difficulty levels and so on, is often more than sufficient.

I've replayed games like Uncharted 2, Super Mario 64, Half Life 2, Final Fantasy VII, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil 4 etc so many times, not necessarily because the second time around there were alternative story options, different playable characters and all the rest, but just because the games were so fun.

The thing is, all the stuff you said here can also be applied to Mass Effect 2 for those that have played it. I'd even argue that Mass Effect 2 did all the bolded above way better than Uncharted 2, with Shepard being able to have different class with different approach each in different playthrough, the freedom to do the mission on the order that you see fit (no, you don't have to get to Mordin first), different party configurations, etc etc etc.

To borrow your sentence, I've replayed games like Mass Effect 2 so many times because the second/third/fourth times there were alternative story options, there were different characters to play around with, and it's also fun to boot.

Honestly, as I always say, ME2 is my "less favourite" in the trilogy, even taking into consideration that it has the best dialogues and storytelling, but it's even better than any Uncharted, considering that Uncharted saga has a ridiculous script and a insultingly simply and linear gameplay basing the game on an "eye-candy" adventure.

Exactly. Uncharted is basically one time done deal. After you play it once, there is no need to come back, unless you are an absolute fan to replay the game. You basically did everything what the game offered you after playing through the entire game once.
But then again, this is a pretty much an unfair comparison and I like choices in games to change minor/major plot details in the game.

People seem to have nostalgia glasses on. The suicide mission and mass effect 2 in general was scripted and linear hugely, and would play out exactly the same but with different 5 second cutscenes showing if your character survived or not

Too tough to compare to be quite honest. Mass Effect was much grander in vision, and Uncharted was much grander in polish and execution. Mass Effect had just the right amount of Bioware Jank, especially on PS3. Both stellar games though :p I do love me some Vanguard action.

I really wish they'd adapt that communication aspect from Alpha Protocol. I think it made the conversations a bit more seamless. I think I'm remembering that correctly anyway.

I dont think people are saying the levels werent linear (tho linear, some had variations) but rather the game structure wasn't linear.

U2 was typically, a cycle of cutscene, climbing, shooting, and beautiful view, repeated.

in ME2 you had the choice of what you did when you did. so your experience with each play thorugh wouldnt play out the same

obviously a big reason for that is the nature of the genre (but then again look at FF13)

Well, you can, for example, end the Shepard story here and got everyone killed except Joker. That in itself was a vastly different result than everyone escaping.

Not to mention you can do hilarious stuff like sending Jacob through that vent, lol.

Two very different games. Both the best installments of their franchise so far.

I would compare U2 to a roller coaster ride that you never want to stop. It was a hard game to put down.

Mass Effect 2 had the enthralling story and vast expansiveness that we now expect to receive from every Bioware game. The characters introduced in that game are some of the best in the series.

I literally can't say which one I enjoyed more because honestly I couldn't get enough of both.
Both delivered on everything they promised.

Mass Effect 2 Launch Trailer for one of the best trailer of all-time though.

Story, setting and characters is subjective but gameplay mechanics and level/encounter design Uncharted 2 wasiles ahead.

Far better movement - ME characters have always felt like mannequins that can barely bend over and bump off stuff. Drake is smooth to control and the animation blending and touching of environment is much better.

Shooting/melee in Uncharted 2 is also much better in every way including from cover. ME2 is much improved from ME1 but still way behind the smooth shooting and melee of U2.

Traversal and climbing and level interaction - probably not even fair to compare except the CGI adverts for ME2 indicate great stuff but turns out in ME2 your characters are nailed to the floor with limited and stiff ability to leap over stuff. U2 of course has terrific mobility and traversal.

Level and encounter design. ME2 sadly is mostly a rinse/repeat of floor based combat using convenient and obvious cover (yet another planet with chest high walls) you fight to progress. While on the face of it similar U2 makes use of the traversal and vertical options as well as Drakes mobility to give you farore combat options. Encounter design is also much better and varied in U2 from fighting in collapsing buildings to moving trains to dodging around leveraging cover to take on tanks. U2 of course has way more variety thanks to the platforming sections.

The way I look at it while I enjoyed both it was obvious is ME2 was running on Uncharted 2 engine with the combat/movement offered vs how Bioware had developed it on Unreal it would automatically become a better game to play given how much of ME2 is combat based. If you took U2 and stuck it on ME2 Unreal engine you'd have got a lesser game. Makes it obvious for me.

Besides, U2 has the train level.

Still like ME2 mind but mechanically the franchise has always been a bit clunky to actually play.

I think these two are probably my top two games of last generation, but on any given day they'd be in a different order. Just utterly incredible in pretty much everything they do.

Would be tempted to say ME2 just because U2's final moments are a bit naff, but then its highs are pretty fucking high.

Tough one!

Uncharted 2 by a wide margin. One of the most consistent gameplay experiences I have had. Mass Effect 2 had very little sense of adventure considering it was an rpg. The modular design made it feel like a series of small interconnected areas, and the story was fine, probably even more interesting than U2. But the way the story was told and the characters were better in U2...

I didn't really care that much about the characters in ME2, and even then the last level felt pretty scripted and linear. Hats off for trying something different though.

Uncharted 2 easily.

The campaign is still incredibly memorable and profound for me.

I barely remember ME2's moments.

just curious, but what exactly did you find "profound" about UC2s campaign? like what part?

only reason I ask is cause I never found any moment in the Uncharted series "profound" as they were like Indiana Jones movies to me whereas in The Last of Us there were alot of profound moments/memories.

not saying you cant find it profound, just wondering what parts as I want to think back on those parts

The only thing good about ME2 was its soundtrack. Damn listening to it again felt so good. Wasted on such a game but damn good. My favorite after Deus Ex HR last gen.

Uncharted 2 executes what it attempts to do much MUCH better than ME2. They are very different games but comparing each in their respective genres and U2 is probably the best or one of the best ever TPS.

ME2 aims higher but its not a great RPG nor is it a great shooter.

No question U2.

You pretty much nail it there for me. Difficult to compare two games that are so different though OP.

UC2 was dull as fuck.

Ummm that is my opinion. I dont think Mass Effect 2 is good in anything. Hell I preferred Deus Ex HR to Mass Effect 2. That is just my opinion man. You do not need to take it seriously and I am not forcing you too. Its fine. Plenty of people feel that way about other critically acclaimed games as well. Hell I hate UC3 equally.

Right on the money, man. I couldn't wait to bang skin-tight suited, CGI Strahovski. That is literally all I thought about when I pre-ordered it.

Mass Effect 2 by a reasonable margin. If we take Lair of the Shadow Broker into account, Mass Effect 2 by a WIDE margin.

The gameplay? Ya know, the main reason I play games?

Shit was basic and mindless. The spectacle just wasn't doing it for me, sorry.

Lol, UC2 is being compared to Mass Effect not Demon's Souls, regardless of how you think of UC2's gameplay, ME2 would have to be your first game to consider it having better gameplay than UC2.

Hell, even the people that picked ME2 in this thread admitted that UC2 had better gameplay.

Both are 2 of the best games of the last generation (both in the top 5 of the last generation for me for sure).

I believe preference between them is entirely subjective so I will state just my personal opinion.

Personally I would prefer ME2 as it is the most re-playable of the two (choices & stuff). Also I believe that ME2 has the best cast of characters we have EVER seen in a game, and the last mission of the game is probably my most favorite mission of all time.

I'd give it to Uncharted 2. I like strongly paced shootbangs so Uncharted 2 hits really well with me. Mass Effect 2 is just disappointing and I'd just recommend Mass Effect 1 over it.
