The 3D platformer renaissance is happening

Oliver and Spike looks interesting. Hadn't heard of that before.

Didn't know Rime was a platformer.

And hopefully A Hat in Time turns out good.

Some of these look pretty bad, though.

I think I'll hold off on saying a renaissance is happening until we have three or four good ones that are actually finished and available to play.

I do agree that a lot of these don't look appealing but i'm still willing to give the ones that stand out the most to me a shot.

Eh, none of these look like they would compete with the likes of Banjo/Crash/Mario/Spyro of the hey day, are any of them actually legitimately amazing?

Check out Grow Home.
I also think Spooky Poo has a lot of potential for a game in as early of a state as it is.

Yeah its very exciting to see all these 3D platformers/action adventure games pop up. Some of them look really, really good (And some of the ones in the OP I didn't even know about).

Sea of Solitude, poi and Forward to the sky all look great. Cloudbuilt too, and a Hat in Time.

Really exciting stuff.

Cloudbuilt is a a fairly good pure platformer that doesn't rely on frivolous collectibles to extend playtime; the levels are designed with one goal only and that is to reach the exit gate. There are multiple modes of play that place handicaps on how you tackle the stages and every level is accompanied with an online leaderboard.

This is what a standard playthrough will look like.

This. Compare the number of classic 3D platformers to 2D. I think it's much easier to screw up and much harder to make great.

Still I prefer these greatly to 2D platformers so hopefully there will be a few I will want to play.

Why does everybody forget Lobodestroyo when listing new 3D platformers?

I dont know if backers are getting more substantial updates, but other than lobodestroyo popping up in Super Indie Karts, theres been next to nothing updatewise post-funding.

I'm gonna be honest, a lot of these look....bad to me. Like the physics look off, they feel sort of sholveware-ish to me honestly. I get this vibe from even a Hat in Time. I wish I could be more interested in these kinds of games since I love platformers but they're just unappealing to me.

OP don't have Hat In Time or the Banjo Spiritual thing ... it is not a catch all =P
Did have A Hat In Time.

Never heard of Lobodestroyo or saw it on any sites. Considering I did the 2014 Kickstarter thread and the current 2015 thread and do a sizable amount of the game posts in the Indie Games threads and do the r/gamedev indie showcase, I think that the dev just doesn't have that much exposure at the moment

How many of these are actually released? Or good?

Don't get me wrong, I am totally on board for a 3D platformer renaissance. But it seems like we are still in the early stages. Ironically, 3D-platformer games in the indie space have a lot of developing to do. Sigh, and unless I build a PC, I won't be able to do comfy couch 3d-Platforming as is should be.

The one with prices are released. Some in the OT are saying that Grow Home is their favorite game of 2015 so far. Cloudbuilt is solid and fun too

Now somebody make a new Tomb Raider game in the same style of the original. Control scheme and all.

Also, a spiritual successor to MDK (1 and 2, I liked the second one as well, damn it) would me me happy. As a matter of fact, I always thought out doing my own clone to this series.

I think this is just a reflection of market realities rather than popularity to be honest; big publishers don't want to make these games, and middle tier publishers are all dead, which leaves it all to indies, and it's only been fairly recently that good quality 3D tools and engines are at an indie affordable price tag.

Some of those games look good, but I don't know how popular they'll get the genre. It's certainly an increase in those types but I don't know how far it'll grow through the industry.

3D platforming does present some massive design challenges compared to 2D though and it's easier to screw up

At the risk of being unpopular, there's a really great 3D platformer MLP fan-game in production at the moment:

Controls surprisingly well, and currently includes a system similar to Magicka where you can combine spells to create new ones. Demo available at the website
for those who aren't currently throwing up out of disgust.

Sure, but taking the tech and tools costs out of the equation leaves more budget (fiscal and mindspace) for an indie to focus on the design side of things.

Thanks OP, a lot of those games slipped under my radar. I'll follow them closer.

FreezeMe seems like take the control straight from Mario 64 and that's good.

play grow home

you'll do a lot more climbing and gliding (btw gliding feels great in this game) than platforming in Grow Home, there's very little actual landmass not counting the plants which in my opinion is a rather gimmicky mechanic and more of an annoyance than truly fun after a short while. The game is also quite short and you better enjoy searching every nook for collectibles, that said I still think it's pretty good for what it is

Lucky's Tale is missing in the op, it's not from a critically acclaimed developer but it looks nice quite so far at least
