Non-annual game series that always get better with each mainline sequel.

I thought this would be a interesting thread. Think of any game series that fit this criteria? Here are two I can think of off the top of my head:

The Monster Hunter games have drastically improved from the original PS2 game from 2004. It's really hard to go back to previous games these days IMO. New numbered sequels come with new monsters, new weapons types to use, improved movelist for older weapons, improved physics and hitboxes, and new gameplay hooks that make hunting the eponymous monsters a more enjoyable experience.

Sure, sometimes we might not get access to online multiplayer in the occasional game thanks to the limits of portable consoles or the roster in one game might not include your favourite monster(s), but all the improvements I previously listed make up for those lost features. The newly released 3DS game has online so I highly suggest picking that one up if you are on the fence.

Now I know I'm gonna get burned for this opinion but hear me out: Even if you don't exactly like the new roster of the Pokemon games, the region the newer games takes place, the cast of characters in said regions, or even how Game Freak took away that one feature from that one game you really liked, the sequels always come with improvements to the RPG aspect of the games enough that you can argue that the games are objectively better monster collecting and battle games with each sequel. You can even argue that the mainline Pokemon games have become an annualized series but that's for another thread (protip: it isn't).

New moves, element types, battle mechanics (like mega evolutions), and additional convenience features for the collecting and breeding aspects of the Pokemon themselves add up for a more fleshed out experience, even if you don't like that they have keychain or garbage Pokemon now. Trading and battling other players has never been a more convenient and simpler experience now than it has been back in the link-cable days.

Console (non-portable) Zeldas. Yes, Skyward Sword was amazing.
I would say "all Zelda games", but the DS ones, while being more than enjoyable and far better than they often portrayed, look lackluster being placed between Minish Cap and ALBW.

To OP: Isn't Pokemon annual now, counting remakes, sequels and third versions?

Far Cry is the first thing that came to mind. I hate the majority of what Ubi is doing nowadays, but I'm so excited to see what they do next with Far Cry.

It's been annual for a couple of games now, but that might not be the case anymore. It's been suspected by some that we're not getting a new one this year.

I'd say Civilization, although its always an "...eventually" type deal, as the next installment vanilla release has been a weaker game than the previous one with all expansions and patches included.

The Elder Scrolls. While there are some games that are considered to be (in retrospect) more fondly remembered, each game is a huge improvement on the previous.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.

Eh, Forza is biannual, dont think it counts.

I disagree with the Far Cry comments, FC2 had a lot of great things in it absent from 3/4, as much as I love the latter two.

I'd say Gears of War is a good answer, wasnt annual either, 2 years for the second, and 3 years for the third.

It's interesting that there was a topic the other day about how this isn't true and people who make this claim haven't played any prior titles to compare

God of War ? (if we dont count ascension which is a prequel)

Kingdom Hearts?? Ok this is one is a bit vague because of all those spin-offs
(i think KH 2 had a way better fighting system, and Birth by sleep is the best one)

Well there's my two choices in the opening post, well actually Pokemon is pretty much annual at this point which is a shame, still can't deny that the base is ever improving even if the most recent entries aren't my personal favourites.

I think you can really see how far Monster Hunter has come when playing MH4 and seeing the way new monsters attack and move compared to some of the returning oldies, actually that's one of my few gripes with the game that there's a few too many of the old ones back for my liking with only a select few feeling overhauled enough to compare to those from the 3rd gen of Monster Hunter onwards, I crave more new monsters, they're a lot more interesting to fight.
In any case the game plays better with each mainline entry, who'd have thought that mere ledge leaping would feel so fresh?

I would say Grand Theft Auto. Everyone has their opinions but you can't deny the strides made from SA to IV to V in terms of physics, graphics, mechanics and performance.

Wow, I totally disagree with this - neither Oblivion nor Skyrim get anywhere close to the quality of Morrowind for me.

huge improvement in what way? they dumbed down everything they could.
I feel like that statement MIGHT apply to Oblivion -> Skyrim, but that's largely because they were already dumbing it down with Oblivion, so may as well make it more pragmatic in Skyrim and throw in some extra fun bits.

I suppose there COULD be a case for Oblivion -> Fallout 3 -> Skyrim, but that's kind of loose and I wish Skyrim had adopted the more interesting Perks of Fallout 3 rather than just generic boosts as I recall you get.
LEGO Batman
Far Cry
Record of Agarest War
Uncharted
inFamous
Dragon Age
LittleBigPlanet
Yakuza
For a lot of people Dragon Age dipped BIGTIME with DAII. Though that was kind of an attempt to make an annual sequel, so that's sort of interesting to point out anyway.

Actually, I suppose I'd just agree with the OP, Pokemon and Monster Hunter are both safe and mostly iterative, and the biggest arguable issue with MH (swimming) got tossed out in 4 anyway. And who knows, maybe they can do a better job in 5 or whatever, especially if it's either N3DS exclusive or on Nintendo's next handheld that will likely have a refined version of the C stick or a normal analog disc/stick instead.

I played then since Arena. I liked each more than the next. I have a fondness for the first, Morrowind and Skyrim, but I thought each was better than the last.

Until '99 dropped, The King of Fighters definitely fit this criteria.

Although it literally was annual.

Oh and the From Souls series.

Almost one page later and I can't believe no one has mentioned Smash Bros.

For everyone outside of the competitive ultra-niche who play this fantastic series for fun (i.e. the vast majority of buyers) I'm willing to say most think every new console release is better than the ones before.

I don't care Smash 4 is a bit slower or more defensive. I don't care it lacks wavedashing. I don't care Diddy Kong is "broken". I play with items ON for Chrissakes! Smash 4 has more of everything and a week ago I hosted an 8 player Smash party and had the most fun I've ever had in any Smash game ever.

Probably because Brawl was considered a massive step down by most people who played Melee regularly, even casual players.

Smash 4 is a significantly better game than Brawl though (and for my money better than Melee).

Certainly not GTA, since both San Andreas and Vice City are better than IV.

Metacritic disagrees with you.

Vice City: 95
San Andreas: 95
IV: 98

(My personal tastes happen to line up with Metacritic. Opinions and all...)

-------------------------

If it weren't for Sunshine, I'd say the Super Mario series would be the perfect answer, since it got better with every entry. But then... what does "mainline" mean, in the case of Super Mario? Handheld titles don't count?

I want to believe in BE

I really do.

I wanted to say Atelier, but it's actually kind of annual.

If you pretend Totori and Ayesha don't exist, then it's not annual and every subsequent game is better than the last one!

Meh, I largely preferred III to IV, and I heard II is pretty excellent, I have yet to play it.

I'd have said that too, but they're definitly annual (at least on PS3). It actually always baffles me how fast they manage to develop them.

I'll admit, I have a hard time to think of a series that would fit.

That's a tough one. Every time I think of one, I feel there was a dip at some point, or are only a couple iterations old (like Forza Horizon).

Persona works.

Maybe Pikmin? Dance Central (Edit: Never mind, annualized)? Project Gotham Racing?

You know, this is really tough.

Hell no. Competitive Melee players think they're more than they actually are. I played a hell of a lot of Melee back in the day. For fun. Full items ON! And myself and most of the 11 million other buyers who made Brawl the best selling Smash ever thought it was, with the exception of tripping, an improvement over Melee. It has everything Melee offered and more and for my casual money that was enough for me to say Brawl was the best Smash ever made. Until Smash 4 of course.

The thing is most of the games that will be named will have critics, people saying the preferred one over another, making this pretty much impossible to do without thinking of an objectively superior game and I can't think of any. Maybe some small-time series from the past or an indie series has the answer.

The fact that you forgot to mention the fourth game says a lot though...

Mainline sequel?

I suppose Ys could get in here. Although some people prefer Oath over 7.

Also, Kingdom Hearts. The jump from 1 to 2 was massive, and 3 looks pretty promising.

Besides that... Devil May Cry I suppose, but only if you count Itsuno's games =P

Musou games rarely get worse.

Some rythm games like Project Diva; Some fighting games like Blazblue.

Stuff like that.
