DOA5:LR Community Soft-Bans 100+ Costumes from Tournaments

A textbook example of how to invoke the Streisand Effect. I would imagine most of the tourney goers would pick the banned costumes as a direct result of this.

Let's hide and censor things that don't align with our radical beliefs, how progressive.

Have Mortal Kombat tournaments banned fatalities yet?
Nope. Never. Of course not, that would be silly.

Graphic, brutal murder of humans is fine, but cleavage and sexy clothes are pure evil.

I don't understand your point. This isn't a move for the casual fanbase.

My point is i think it's a silly move. Doesnt matter if it's in a competetive setting or casual setting. T&A and silly outfits is what DOA is mostly about. Take that away and you're left with a very mediocre fighter. In my humble opinion.

Well, unfortunately for you, this isn't about placating you, and is about the competitive circle. And the competitive circle doesn't believe the game is mediocre.

Neither do I either. DoA has always been my 3d fighter or choice, based on pure gameplay.

What costumes they ban doesn't change what the game is for better or worse.

In the end the whole thing is pointless except to try and serve someones agenda.

Most people who go to tournies don't fuck with the soft bans. It's a sign of disrespect if you do.

Umm I thought the DOA community is the one that's banning the costume. What does that have to do with the MK community not banning fatalities?

If the costumes do distract players, while that is a bad excuse, it does serve a purpose.

If it is to try and gain some legitimacy in the FGC, time has passed. Tekken struggles for legitimacy today, and it is the most popular 3d fighter.

Damn, and here i was thinking this was all about making me happy.

I think MK would be a better example of a fighter struggling. Tekken at least has Korea and Japan where it has an active scene. MK is super popular casually yet many people only play it competitively because WB throws a bunch of money at tournaments. Sorta like they did with Injustice.

They're not doing this to change the perception, they're doing this for the integrity of the matches because those costumes are too distracting for the competitors.

Ahahah what? Just seen that this was the official excuse too.
How can you be distracted by those? Is that such a problem that now the slightest nudity hint is horrible?
Jesus, when you see some moves in fighting games, this is really nothing that could shock anyone...

Mortal Kombat has always been a nonentity in the FGC though. Calling it a struggle would imply that it was ever alive.

MK9 has made it as strong as ever, but it's still fairly weak.

Bluntly, they fully deserve the disrespect. This rule makes the DoA competitive community look like a bunch of crybabies, while simultaneously drawing attention to the fact that DoA has lots of overly sexy costumes. As I said, I fully expect a massive upswing in the use of sexy costumes in offline tournaments as a direct result of this.

On one hand, whatever. It's a tournie, they're always going to have weird rules, just like the no weapons all Final Destination Smash games.

On the other hand, you're taking out the one thing that makes people want to buy the series. The fighting in that game is fun, but I could mash it out in Tekken and Soul Calibur just as well.

Everybody should just lighten up

This seems like a useless gesture to me but whatever. People's opinions of DOA won't change and the tourney scene for it will continue to be anemic at best.

What people doing here is sweeping the "problem" (if they see it that) under the rug.

You know what would be the best approach? Embrace the "lewdness" WHILE showing the goods. Show them that it's not just a titty fighter, but a GOOD COMPETITIVE titty fighter.

Pretty much. Their approach is bad if not brow-raising.

I would hardly call the nudity in this game the slightest.

And not everyone is as desensitized to naked ladies as others. Regardless, if the people here want to inspire a change, then start attending these tournaments and let the DOA community hear your voice.

This is what happens when you take joke games seriously. Getting Smash flashbacks. No Items, Fox only, Final destination!

What's the reasoning behind this?? Sounds stupid unless somebody can reasonably explain why!!

They want to legitimize the game and maybe attract people who might have been on the fence in the game beforehand because of its reputation.

And no, it's not taking away the most important aspect of the series as some of you have implied. It's just putting the other part on the forefront.

It's hard to believe that was the reasoning for the soft ban.
I consider the PRO DOA players desensitized to the skimpy outfits. Would be pretty lame otherwise.

Can't have that. People would be distracted and would be too busy fapping to the jiggly to notice the gameplay. Best to go ahead and try to ban what everyone watching already knows is there anyway.

And this won't change anything. People who watch Dead or Alive matches in tournaments are either already interested in the game or watching specifically for the tits and ass anyway.

There's virtually no logic in what they have and haven't banned. None of the fanservice outfits for the guys are apparently banned (including going topless), and some of the outfits they've picked don't seem to be particularly fanservicy.

Why not just disallow all DLC costumes in tourney play and only allow for the default four costumes? Seems like a more sensible course of action if they must take this route.

Soft banning these costumes will do nothing to improve the game's image in that regard. People already know Dead or Alive is about the tits. It's got a reputation that's present all over the game and marketing.

Dead or Alive's image will only change if Team Ninja changes it.

Kind of strange when the developers behind the game want it to have that reputation.

Well best of luck to them if they want to get momentum for the idea.

Eh, it sounds more like "look at us we're trying to be progressive even though we're not really solving the 'problem'" scenario

But I can understand their reasoning. I mean, lok at the thread, some people already said DOA is just about tits or it is a joke game. I can understand they get annoyed at this and try to change the image, because IMO it's a good game.

It's true that it wont help though. And it's also true that this is all TN PR fault.

Nah it does fine
higher than Tekken at evo's if im not mistaking

They have banned Fatalities but people still did them and didn't get banned lol

This game bans moves? what happens if you do it be accident like press a button from a recovery too early which buffered the move thats banned?

Hmm, just checking, the costumes I mainly use aren't banned, so it doesn't affect me that much.

BUT still seems pretty stupid to do so considering some of the costumes being banned aren't even that fanservicey and I don't know why none of the male costumes are banned.

Totally misdirected effort, IMO. If being in a public tournament setting isn't enough to shame people away from the most "offensive" costumes, then those people are totally comfortable with it. The non-gameplay related bans are a slippy slope.

The approach is bad though. Honestly they should grab the opportunity and go "We have tits, ass, AND good gameplay to boot!"

They want to showcase the fighting without the distracting outfits. Its like not wanting a bunch of bikini models all over a custom Skyline in photos, you want to see the car in its glory.

There are poofy outfits that hid limbs though making it hard to see attacks. Those should be outright banned.

FYI Evo banned fatalities. I think it was because of time.

Shit like this always comes across as being uptight and ultra-conservative to me. Not that I give a rat's ass about this game or the fighting genre, I just hate censorship being pushed for whatever reasons.
