Games you didn't know received sequels

I knew about it back in the day, but it was definitely a billion times more obscure than its predecessor, Zombies Ate My Neighbours.

It was nowhere near as good as Zombies Ate My Neighbors either (iirc the controls were super floaty compared to the original), I ended up giving my copy away to a kid for his birthday lol.

I loved the name 'Ghoul Patrol' though.

I found out about it about ten years after launch. The first one is one of my favourite N64 games, my favourite console. I just had a Gamecube at the time..
I tried hunting down a copy, but just couldn't find one. Is it good? Worth playing through?
I remember reviews being pretty bad back in the day. Might still be worth playing just because you enjoyed the first so much.
I believe it bombed horribly and pretty much killed the franchise.

I never knew that Final Fantasy IV received a sequel featuring Cecil's son. To this day, I consider the game to be glorified fanfiction.

A lot of people are always amazed that there was in fact a Dino Crisis 3. just goes to show how botched and buried that release was.

Put me in that camp. Although I have not played any of them, I was very well acquainted with 1, and barely (but still) knew that there was a second one. But a third one? No idea it existed, I only learned this via GAF recently.

I actually found out about this shortly before release (VERY shortly) and picked it up. I had no clue they were working on another game with the brave fence musashi name. I had loved the brave fencer musashi on the PS1 so I thought I would like this game as well.

Played the PS2 games back in the day and even the one for the 360, but didn't realize there was a sequel beyond the recent Assault Horizons (which I disliked).

It's not particularly impactful to the series in terms of story (there's a story, but it's slow to progress and somewhat stale), but the gameplay itself is in line with that of the original series (which is a plus). Being free-to-play certainly makes it more accessible, though I think they went about it the wrong way. The whole concept of buying fuel seems like it would deter players rather than promote a consistent playerbase (which would, in-turn, draw in more customers). Overall, it's a nice nod to the rest of the series and offers a few minutes of fun at no expense to the player.

Yeah, it didn't reach the heights that the original game did for me. I did really love the music in this one, though.

I'm gonna get trashed for this, but I didn't find out about Killzone 3 until late last year.

The little-known and totally awesome early PS2 mecha action game R.A.D. (Robot Alchemic Drive) got a not-really-a-sequel followup in Tetsujin 28 Go. It used the same engine as R.A.D. but had improvements. Your robot can fly and pick up buildings and stuff. It was super fun but only came out in Japan.

...and R.A.D. was a not-a-sequel to Remote Control Dandy for PSX. They also have a JP-only DS mech game called Chousoujuu Mecha MG which is somewhat similar.

(also, Tetsujin 28-go = Gigantor, for those who don't know.)

I had no idea Wii Play got a sequel. I saw it in a store a few months back and was pretty surprised I had never heard of it...

This game was actually made by a bunch of smaller external developers (Chinsoft, Prope, Good-Feel, Skip, Arzest, Mitchell, Vanpool) and Nintendo used that same approach for the Streetpass DLC games.

Oh god a quick scroll past had me thinking that I missed a PS2 era Kingdom Hearts game!

*shudders* Assault Horizon made me hate the series

Infinity gave me renewed hope and it was my first free to play game... It was also my last free to play game.

Even getting unlimited access to story mode for $20 just couldn't get me to care. I just don't want to support where the series is going right now.

Hotel Dusk getting a sequel completely slipped under my radar. Only found out about it a few months ago and have yet to play it.

Whoever owns the rights now should really consider releasing them digitally on 3DS. Hotel Dusk was great and one of these days I'll find the time to sit down to Last Window. I imported a UK copy just haven't gotten around to playing it. Guess us NA gamers got lucky in that the DS is at least region free.

i don't think any sequel to any of the games i own has completely slipped from my radar.
i've passed on some games on purpose because i didn't like their originals but i can't remember any game where this happened.

the opposite thread should be an interesting read too. games you played that didn't know had a prequel.

I knew about this but I bet a few didn't and I'm not surprised as it was utter shite.

I had this game as a kid, but never the original. Recently I've seen screens and video snippets here and there of ZombiesAMN and noticed how similar it was. I just figured it stole from it or something. Had no idea my game was the sequel.

Game is super hard though, could never get past level 3 without cheating.

Wow OP what a coincidence! I was also searching for info about Nightmare Creatures just yesterday and i too,was surprised to learn that there was a second game!

Yea man. It was triggered by that N64 thread that's been on the first page.

It's probably the best one in the series

Lol. I love me some DC. I'll have to see for myself, soon. I'll have to buy a copy on eBay.

I didn't find out there was a sequel to Parappa until like 5 years ago.

Woah. That's a new one. I remember UmJammer Lammy, but not this.

Yes, this is real.

LOL REVENGE, tho.

I used to be the biggest Virtual On fan. Rode my bike to a faraway movie theater to play the monster VO cabinet at the arcade. Bought the Saturn edition not long after it came out, mailed away for the NetLink Edition (packed with Sega Rally) whenever that was available. Paid my parents for long-distance costs associated with playing it online.

I used my first ever paycheck at my first ever real job to import Oratorio Tangram for Dreamcast, and when I actually made it to Japan in 2008 the only game I came back with was the Sega Ages PS2 Virtual On port.

That being said, whenever I see this:

I forget it ever existed.

Gah! Just a bastardized version of the brilliant arcade game. This is the one you need to play.

I bet you will see a lot of Street Fighter IIs in that thread.

Another I had no clue existed.

Yeah, I was already with my PS3 when I learned about this game. Never played it though.

... and another.

I knew about Star Raiders on Atari, and about Solaris. It took me a while to realize Solaris is a sequel to the other. The recycled box art gives it away though.

Interestingly, Star Raiders II does exist, but it wasn't programmed by the same guy and fans consider Solaris to be the true and only sequel.

Even more interesting, both Solaris and Star Raiders II almost became a licensed The Last Starfighter game, but the plans fell though and instead Iridium was ported from the C64 to NES and renamed The Last Starfighter.

Well. Consider my mind officially blown.
