I too am reading a terrible book. Somehow, I decided to buy a $2 Ann Coulter book off Amazon. It's been entertaining so far.

A rather strange Manga of the 80s that was rather popular in Japan. I cracked up when I read about it and had to mention it in the book.

Rick Chapman
Author "Rule-Set: A Novel of a Quantum Future."

Why? Hacktivist groups are real, alive, and do all sorts of interesting things.

The noun for them will probably be different in 2087, but I'm not going to go Andrew Burgess and try to create the slang of tomorrow. I've got enough going on the book already!

It's supposed to be way more exciting when the author of a book comes to GAF to argue with someone who didn't like his book.

That isn't really how replies work, bruh.

I'm 13K words into "Vorpal Sword," then "The Hawking Man." I took time out to write ANOTHER novel,"Selling Steve Jobs Liver" which I should finish in about two weeks.

I estimate June for VS. The list of books is up on the rs site. I also write reviews of other sci-fi books, mostly indies. My way of giving back.

Anything by Kevin J Anderson

His writing is ok, but as soon as there are any romance bits I want to puke. Its as if an alien who only knows about love and sex through wikipedia is trying to understand these concepts by writing about them

Also lol at Rick Chapman auto inserting his sig

I'm not going to argue. If you have a question about why I wrote something the way I did, I'll certainly answer it. If you hate the book, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I'm quite happy that people were interested enough to discuss it.

Were you able to take any constructive criticism or feedback from your readers?

It's the virtual crazy glue I sprinkled on the cover.

+++ The main character is such an insufferable know it all, he literally goes into exposition in every conversation. +++

Well, he IS a college professor. They tend to talk a lot.

+++ There is world building, and then there is making a text book. +++

This book has broken down quantum phyics, kendo, Native American History, Rapeman, Otaku culture, Lulzset, Japanese gift wrapping, Korean-Japanese relations, and why polygamy has no place in modern society.

You forgot AI. A key plot point.

I didn't say polygamy has no place in modern society. In fact, I think its acceptance is inevitable in the US. It's already starting to edge towards the mainstream.

I do have fun with the concept, though!

Let me share with you one of the goals of RS. I am attempting to create a world of tomorrow that feels plausible and "solid." That you can feel. When you write a novel a couple of centuries out, you can do whatever you want. Matter replicators? No problem.

How do they work? Heisenberg Compensators.

But 2087 is too close for that to work. Beside, you can have all sorts of fun with the science of today and extrapolate out logically.

I'm going to create a thread about every book I read from now on, good or bad, just in the hopes that the author makes an account and comes to chat eventually.

Rick you seem like a cool guy and I'd like you to stick around. A pro tip about that would be learning how to reply and stop advertising at the end of every post.

Just some friendly advice.

I can't believe I read The Last Templar.

The Heroine: "Why don't you fuck me? I'm beautiful!"
The Hero: "It's not you, it's my father. He's dead."

Damn that book, it's so terrible.

Come explain yourself, Raymond Khoury

The most common criticism is that the first third of the book has too much setup and description. OTOH, no has complained that after that, the book doesn't move along at a nice pace.

In the first drafts, there was much more in there that I stripped out.

As I said in an earlier post, I'm interested in creating a world that when you look at it, you say, "Yeah, that just might be the way it goes."

Also, the hero of Rule-Set is not very heroic. He's heading happily towards middle age, likes his expanding waste line, has one singular goal in life, and is dragged kicking and screaming into a situation he doesn't want be in. He's been through some things that formed his opinions and actions.

But, of course, characters do change and evolve. But Clarence is not going to change his mind about some things. But he'll do what he has to do.

I want him to feel real, not perfect.

I decided to get things setup in the beginning and move out from there. The sequels will move more rapidly, but I gave myself a big canvas to play on.

Also, I want to avoid The Proteus Problem. That takes some work. The true nerds out there know what I mean.

OTOH, I didn't go Tad Williams on you either!

I don't think providing my name and stating I'm the Rick Chapman who wrote the book is advertising.

Providing a link where you can read more about the book seems logical. Actually, most of the content at that link consists of reviews of other people's books and articles about self publishing.

Is there some sort of prohibition about me saying I'm the author of the book under description, using my name, and providing a link?

But it has some interesting ideas, but they are buried in such crap. Ever had one of those books you hate but you keep reading?
.

Oh so its like the cyberpunk version of Perdido Street Station

BOOM!

No. Not Cyberpunk.

Well, if Cyberpunk can include tweed jackets with leather patches, I guess.

But I don't think that really works.

Maybe Academic Pre Apocalyptic Post Dystopianism? With some Asian studies mixed in?

Two things:
1. If you want to reply to somebody, hit the "quote" button next to the post you are replying to. Putting the text in the title of the reply is awkward and hard to follow.
2. "Signing" your posts is generally frowned upon and can lead to your being banned. When someone clicks on your user name, they will be directed to your user profile. You can put links to your website or other information in your profile.

Nice.

I wonder if I complain about Ben Counter's Soul Drinkers saga he would show up (I thought the plots and characters were nonsensical but the epic battles kept me reading, W40K is violence porn).

Be careful with the power of author-summoning. My sister recently started reading Don Quixote and last week Cervantes unearthed himself from his hidden tomb beneath a monastery.
