Here's the synopsis of the law:

I'm going to enjoy the first time someone tries to deny service based on this law, and they get taken to court, and the court rules in favor of the plaintiff because the business was not being "substantially burdened".

99% of People who intend to use this law for discrimination are going to find out the hard way that it only covers ridiculously overtly religious organizations. (Unless the text has changed in the last few weeks since I read up on it). Random business owner who has no overt Christian based business practices and imagery and advertising? Gonna lose that court case hard.

Hope that gets the law repealed sooner rather than later.

he pointed to President Barack Obama's health care law -- which triggered a lawsuit by Hobby Lobby to ensure the company wasn't required to cover birth control through its employees' health insurance plans.

Protection for the religion of a corporation.

Corporations are people too, I guess.

Shit is disgusting. Indiana should be ashamed.

The only consolation is that the assholes who helped pass this will forever be on the wrong side of history.

"The Constitution of the United States and the Indiana Constitution both provide strong recognition of the freedom of religion but today, many people of faith feel their religious liberty is under attack by government action," Pence said.

Here's the thing, Mr Pence:

Those people are incorrect.

Now can we move on?

Metaphoreus

This is semantics, and nothing more

SMH at CNN's title and lead sentence. Complete misrepresentation of the bill. (No complaints about your thread title, though.)

Paging Metaphoreus. You can now perform your happy dance.

Why would I be happy? The law includes a significant flaw.

Here's the thing, Mr Pence:

Those people are incorrect.

Now can we move on?

If they're wrong, then they won't benefit from the RFRA, which only protects those whose exercise of religion is substantially burdened by a governmental entity without sufficient justification.

If the NCAA is so mad then maybe they should relocate their event.

Sadly money is the only thing that does anything in this country, so if indiana loses out on that tourist money they might veto this shit law.

Aren't we Christians supposed to be chill like Jesus who hanged out with hookers, samaritans, sick people, beggars and pretty much everyone sans the orthodox judgemental assholes?

Fuck Indiana.
Never ever going there, even if they host cons. Fuck 'em.
Like I mentioned earlier, that only leaves you 30 states to visit.

Please don't hate all Hoosiers and our state based on our legislature and governor. I'm sure you would want to tell anyone outside of America the same thing. :(

Aren't we Christians supposed to be chill like Jesus who hanged out with hookers, samaritans, sick people, beggars and pretty much everyone sans the orthodox judgemental assholes?
Like any book, people get a lot of different things out of the Bible. Some become oppressive assholes, some become less judgmental and friendlier, some don't get anything out of it.

I'm with you that we should emulate the manners and teachings of Jesus by loving others and there are many, many Christians who agree with that sentiment. Clearly, there are others who do not.

This whole thing just sucks so much.

Why did GOP Governors go so right? It's like they're taking cues from the idiots in Congress.

The problem with Pence is he was one of the main idiots in the Republican Congress.

He got under 50% of the vote in 2012 in his Governor's race (only won by 3 points) and acts like he is a big Presidential candidate.

For those who don't live in Indiana, our disgusting government has just signed into law a bill that allows business owners to discriminate freely, with the primary purpose being to prevent LGBTQ customers from being able to use their services. To call this a "religious freedom" issue is appalling -- and he even has the gall to say this:

“This bill is not about discrimination, and if I thought it legalized discrimination in any way in Indiana, I would have vetoed it. In fact, it does not even apply to disputes between private parties unless government action is involved. For more than twenty years, the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act has never undermined our nation’s anti-discrimination laws, and it will not in Indiana.
Aka, it's not discrimination because I said so.

This bill gives anyone running a business free game to deny people service based on any "religious reason". Theoretically, this could be used to have Christians ban Muslims, Atheists ban Christians, anything -- but as I said it's mainly about fucking over the LGBTQ community.

Many businesses, including GenCon (a HUGE money puller and by far one of the biggest conventions we see) have threatened to vacate Indiana if this was passed, and here it is. I seriously don't understand why they thought this was okay given the huge amount of push back against it.

Someone please tell me how "You're gay so get out of my store" isn't discrimination?
And while you're at it, I'd like to move to another state.

If you live in Indiana, you BETTER FUCKING VOTE against Pence next election you can.

This bill is not about race, it's about forced busing.
This bill is not about women's rights, it's about a doctor's freedom of speech.
This bill is <repeat>

Been seeing this all over my Twitter. Thoughts with those in Indiana having to witness it happen. Texas is working to do the same, sadly.

GenCon should pull out and make this state even more worthless than it already is.

Given they said they were going to, I fully expect them to. And here I was hoping Pence would listen to ALL THE BUSINESS OWNERS yelling at him not to do this -- he didn't do this for the businesses, he did it for his own anti LGBT agenda.

So basically, the only way for this bill to become null & void for LGBT people in any reasonable timeframe is if the SCOTUS declare sexual orientation and gender identity to be protected classes in their upcoming June case, right?

That, however, does not mean that this bill can't be used against people of other religions, though. So, it still presents a problem either way. =/

Should could you use this bill to turn away homophobes and other religious nuts? Or would that be seen as more war on religion? Fucking insane either way.

Okay, I fully read the link in the OP and read the OP in its entirety. Where is the evidence that the primary purpose is to prevent queer people to use services? I don't doubt it one bit mind you, nor am I dismissing the claim, but it would be helpful to get another source that elaborates on this further, to be more informative on the situation.

Basically, I wanna know exactly how fucked up this law is.

Edit: this was written for the prior thread before a merge, I have not yet read THIS OP.

Honestly, I really, really, really, REALLY hope that tonight, Pence sits down at his favorite restaurant, gets all nice and comfy, and when they bring out his menu, it's just a big piece of paper saying "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", and then the waiter tells him they only serve good Christians, citing this bill as their reason for denial of service.

Well, its right there in plain sight. If you don't see it, you're just having trouble with understanding that this is a response to the momentum of the LGBT community. Ask yourself why wasn't this done, say 10 years ago.. what are they reacting to? Clearly -- it can't say "NO GAYS!" But, the reason everyone is pulling money out of the state is due to the understanding that this is to discriminate against people. Its going backwards. There is plenty to understand without waiting for a line that just says flat out what its for. This obfuscation is the point of the legislation, so that it looks like they aren't bigots. The people that support this will clearly align with the idea that it in-no way is meant for discrimination.. as it literally doesn't spell it out.

Maybe read why a lot of companies are pulling out of indiana..? That should help an understanding of the effect of the legislation.

I remember when GOP Governors were more moderate. We've seen this with Kansas and their radical tax cuts, Wisconsin attacking public unions and education, refusing to expand Obamacare, and so on and on.

It's a strategy of the Tea Party to over take local governments, down to city council and board of education. It's working scarily well.
