NCCA official unhappy with Tekken 7 character 'Josie Rizal'

I thought it was dumb, but then I thought what if the had a black character named Martha Luther King and had her running around half naked with a tie and skimpy suit clothes......yeah I get their point.

Totally understandable, it almost makes too much sense

I, for one, was glad that that quote was written exactly as is instead of being translated into English. Because seriously, that statement made me cringe and it still does until now.

I sympathize, it seems easily offended old people in charge of things are a universal constant.

A sad, sad fact. I wish it's possible to completely shut them out. Oh well

it could have been worse. Imagine her in a maid costume!

Indeed. That would raise more eyebrows than Josie's current design.

I'm a Filipino and conservative as well. Seeing the name might be eerily awkward for some of us, but I'm just glad there's a Filipina character in Tekken. Now I'm interested in finding out more about Tekken 7 because of it.

Yeah, I was never fond of the name. I don't see what harm there is in changing it.

It's up to Harada, though. We'll see how he feels about all this.

They are just jealous that their national hero is not portrayed in a video game in a way that perfectly captures the spirit of their nation like this character below.

....Is she fucking people up? If she's a broken bad-ass, I'd main her. My opponent can catch this fade...for peace and equality.

Edit: BTW, I'm tired of all this art censoring lately. Change her design to something a bit more sensible (swap the skirt for shorts, make her top sleeveless), but the name stays.

How are people in support of changing anything about the character? It's a humorous joke, sure people can be upset about, that's their decision but just don't get the game then calling for it to be changed is nothing but censorship.

Eh, not really. I mean Jose Rizal is not a war fighter like Andres Bonifacio(another Filipino hero).

But really, I don't see the big deal. I was excited that finally a Filipino fighter will join in the gaming world (didn't know Talim is Pinay).

Also, Harada seems to go for the Pnoy (President Nonoy) colors (yellow). Intriguing

I read "NCAA" and was thoroughly confused for a moment.

lol same.

All Namco needs to change is remove the last name and we're good....or give her another last name , then move on.

Of course naming a fictional character a name that sounds similar....isnt that offensive.

As a Filipino, just wanted to echo some of the sentiment here about how this is mostly the conservative old guard doing what they do.

Personally, when I told my Filipino fighting game and non-fighting game playing friends about Josie they were all ecstatic. And this isn't even about any "Pinoy Pride" propaganda garbage, I think it's very cool that Markman (who is Filipino), an important bedrock to the fighting game community (and a Gaf member of course) had a hand in creating the character.

If the problem is her attire, what's wrong with some tight/flattering pants? Works well on Talim from Soul Calibur and looks a lot more respectable [more compared to some of the rest of the cast].

I mean, Jesus H, Josie's pants barely look like they cover her ass.

What I fear is that it's not only the old crotchety folk but also the denizens they brainwashed would have this sentiment.

Not sure what's respectable about showing her beef curtains through her shorts.

Filipino here, and when I found out about her I thought it was pretty cool. But yeah, the "conservative filippinos" thing makes sense to me.

The 'H' stands for hentai.
As a Filipino myself, I am kind of surprised that there is this controversy.

We dot have much representation in games at all, so I don't get why this is controversial. The name is even a nod to a historical figure.

The reference is the name. I'd be down for a black female fighter named Martha Lucia King rocking red white and blue. Make her look like Pam Grier in Jackie Brown.

She wears shorts underneath................not that I was purposely looking.

I'm Filipina and this is the first I've heard of this character... I think it's really cool that the Philippines is finally getting representation in Tekken, especially since the series is super popular there.

Her outfit looks par for the course for Tekken designs in general. The name is seriously goofy, though I find it hilarious rather than offensive. :p

Heck, I see she is popular with a lot of American born Filipino's

I saw when she was announced that several of my friends already want to cosplay her for events like Anime Expo or Pacific Media Expo.

I'd change the name - which is just a dumb pun - before I change the outfit. That isn't the real historical figure in any way.

Hey Americans... how mad are you about Abraham Lincoln in Code Name S.T.E.A.M? Enraged I'll bet.

I'd be weirded out if he was wearing short shorts and a belly shirt, or some other outfit like that. (...not enraged though lol)

Though I really dislike the design of Josie's costume (the yellow is too much). Many politicians here in the Philippines get riled up for the littlest things. They also declare Persona Non Grata for the littlest insults or jokes made at the Philippines expense. In my opinion, I believe that some of our fault as a nation is that we sometimes make a big deal of things too much. And sometimes we think too highly of ourselves and that we are infallible as a nation.

"It's hard for us to prevent other countries from making characters like this because Philippines is very popular around the world."

For me, this is a very ridiculous quote and just goes to show the stupidity of some of our public officials as this is pretty much a non-issue elsewhere. Some of these people also use the "freedom of speech and expression" card whenever it is beneficial to them but they would try to block other's freedom of expression when it "offends" them. Of course, the media does not help as they also celebrate every person with a little bit of Filipino blood in them that does something of note internationally.

As another poster here mentioned, if we had another boxer named Manny Pacman with a Pacman belt then many would also rejoice.

Though offtopic, I like this as an alt costume. Jollibee costume is great. The true filipino icon. Just remove the ribbon. :p

Just want to add that government officials here allowed this to happen:

It's the most famous monument of Jose Rizal in the country together with an ugly view of an unfinished condominium.

I don't think they should change a damn thing. Conservatives in the US get pissed and offended when presidents get portrayed as crazed robots or murderous dictators and those games don't get changed.

I thought the idea of naming her after a national hero was pretty cool, but I think the outfit she wears is pretty damn lame. I am usually all in favor of skimpy outfits and scandalous designs, but since the Tekken team is making a big deal out of her, I think something a bit more conservative would be appropriate. Her skirt is ridiculously short. What's wrong with giving her some skinny jeans instead? She can even keep that awful top and show off midriff if they're that dead set on the sex appeal, just give her skinny jeans. That skirt is a bigger part of that image problem, I think.

This is coming from a guy who has a Tekken tattoo on his left arm and has bought a lot of the sexy costumes for DOA5: LR on PS4. I'm a fan and I've got no problem with tits and ass in my videogames. I just think this could be one exception where they may want to tread a bit more carefully in the interest of being respectful to the country they are claiming they want to honor.

Read the title and I thought Al Sharpton was up to something. I was thinking "what does he want to do with Tekken", then I read the OP ;)

I hope Namco does not budge.

don't worry, these people are ignorable

the worst thing I could imagine is them (and their deluded followers) calling for a ban on Tekken 7, but that won't happen

It's Tekken so it's kind of whatever. But to be fair, if you had asked me what nationality she was supposed to be, Filipino wouldn't have even crossed my mind. She looks either Hispanic or like an overly tan white girl.

I'm Filipino here, and I don't feel one bit offended by the name. It's pretty cool they actually decided to do a homage to an important historical figure in the name.

I guess the only negative thing I can take out of Josie Rizal is her design. I'm still pretty ambivalent to it, but it's all a matter of taste. I don't think it's that offensive at all, this is a cheesy fighting game at all.

I DO wish that aside from having Muay Thai as her fighting move, they actually incorporated some Filipino martial arts in to her moves if they really wanted to drive home the point that she's a Filipina. Then again, I haven't really seen the trailer and I'm not an expert in Filipino martial arts, so I'm not sure if they did that.
