Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

OMG, I was looking for a place where to discuss a bit about Shoot em ups. Yes, I have to walk around shmups.org :)

These days I have to say I have found a lot of good shmups in all the platforms. Since Jet's N Guns (one of my favourite games) with its lovable ost from Machinae Supremacy, I remember Hydorah, Aqua Kitty Milk Mine Defender, Astebreed, Gaurodan, Armed Seven, Gigantic Army, Satazius, Full Blast, Fantasy Zone 3DS and other games of this type. It is like a resurrection, BUT, i don't see they arrive to the big public, even the big indie public (with the exception of Luftrausers or Jamestown).

So, I have a couple of questions for discussing a bit with you:

A) What needs (marketing - name of the developers aside) a shmup to arrive to the big public. It need to be bullet hell, or this is not needed?
B) Appart from Astebreed, do you know any other shump that has come near to the modern ways of doing the gameplay ? Is this the way the shumps have to use to approach modern games?

A pleasure to read you :)

Not actually that important
Deathsmiles is the only CAVE iOS game that supports MFI.
But it works very well!

Anyone interested in iOS Shmups should give .Decluster a try, its amazing!
Decluster - Into Bullet Hell

Meh, always welcome new bh but man I hate that over played (non)aesthetic and I just can't play my shmups without them being visual feasts (even better when 2D), probably why I've always hated Milestone's stuff.
Btw, the ship's silhouette looks pretty similar to a Silvergun :p

Anyone here who ever tried the indie free shmup Legendary Wings?
It's TF inspired and also uses some assets from various games but looking at the screens it seems pretty cool, could never find a video on youtube lol

Whoops, I just bought a copy of PAL XIIStag (PS2) not realizing that it is the same as XIIZeal in the Shooting Love collection (360). So confusing.

Steredenn is up for preorder for a Steam copy.

Oh shit it's coming to Xbox One too?? Awesome, purchase redeemed :p
Bit pissed that MS still won't allow self publishing to be as easy on XBLA as X1, I'm sure the game could've come out there too and I have all my shmups on 360 besides a few on PS3.

I mean, it's not like Cave's gonna re-release their games on X1 or MS put out a 360-compatible X1 in the future so... -_-

Fun fact: Treasure is comprised of mainly ex-Konami devs, mostly those that handled the early development of the Arcade Gradius, Salamander, and console titles like Parodius, few of the console Castlevania titles (I believe a majority of the original NES Castlevania staff)

So it was sensible decision for Konami to outsource to Treasure to handle Gradius V's development.

I mean who is better to develop a proper Gradius game, more so than the very people responsible of the previous games in the series.

Now that is said, I am now sad because Gradius 6 which was supposed a PS3 launch title being canceled. Hell just imagining a Treasure developed modern take of Castlevania (which would be like Super Castlevania IV or Bloodlines) is making me even sadder.

I'll stop typing now.

Treasure was indeed formed by ex-Konami dudes but their roles at Konami has been wildly embellished and they had nothing to do with most of the franchises you listed.

People from Treasure worked on Contra 3 and Super Castlevania 4, as well as Castlevania Adventure for Game Boy (which they're quick to write off as terrible), but most of their work went into obscure and/or JP-only games like Rollerball, Bucky O'Hare, Laser Invasion and Axelay (and when I say "they" it's usually limited to one or two people per game).

The game with the most pre-Treasure DNA is the NES version of Bucky O'Hare, IIRC.

This, this is the moment I lost faith in Treasure. Not the fifty times all their dudes quit, not the time they made Stretch Panic, right now.

In M2 I trust to blow me away this gen.
pls

Did we ever get confirmation on the "CAVE dudes are at M2 now" thing? It seems that a decent chunk of the old guard is still there and worked on Mahouotome, and I heard somewhere that Yagawa's plugging away on mahjong games, so I'd be curious to know exactly who is at M2 now, if anyone.

This has been happening to my NTSC-J X360 for months now, I was avoiding the issue but I felt the urge to play Mushi HD and I just can't have this piece of crap in this state. Basically, the console hard-locks after 30 mins of playtime, sometime even earlier.

Sadly, if I try to place a repair order through Xbox Canada the only option I'm given is to localize it, which obviously I don't want. Here's my prerogative now: Do I try to repair it on my own? Do I send it to repair locally? Do I sell it broken as it is for scraps? I think I'll have to give in and buy another new console. But at least it would be nice to see if this one can be put to some use. :(

Anyone heard of Naious for X68000 ?

Decent looking ThunderForce II / III inspired shmup with great music. Made by Exact in 1990, the developers of Jumping Flash! on PS1,

Don't forget that this is the first Shooting Love that came out like 5-7 years ago and was always region-locked. One more to finally fall.

They are both great sets. Folks like the new collection better but the first is no slouch.
