Could our boy Roy and Street Fighter's Ryu be the next SSB4 DLC? (RUMOR)

Huh... the main character in the live action movie and US cartoon was Guile. Ryu did star in the anime and anime movie made in the same period though.
The cartoon and the movie were made by American companies, so it makes sense for them to highlight Guile. Ryu has been the lead everywhere else.

Which game characters would you guys say are the most iconic that aren't in Smash yet? Ryu is definitely up there. I feel like they've covered the most already.

Erdrick/Loto from Dragon Quest.

Why would it be Raging Demon?

It would be better than a generic energy beam, and is cool looking ! (And it would be not the first time Ryu use this move)

Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania are, imo, the sole series that are truly iconic game franchises that are yet to make it (back in MGS' case) into Smash, and also would make sense. Pick your poison there.

I'd also list stuff like Halo, Resident Evil or Silent Hill, but I don't think we'll ever see violent or terrifying games like that represented in Smash (outside of Fatal Frame getting a trophy or something). Well, I guess I could see making a case for Halo, but let's be real here lol.

Welp, that's one E3 annnouncement spoiled.
At least we haven't seen footage.

Lot of arguing in this thread.
How would people about Sora out of curiosity?

I have no issue with a Square rep after Simon makes it in. Sora really wouldn't fit though as Kingdom Hearts has very little to do with Nintendo. Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest would be a much better match.

What I'm ultimately saying is that calling Ryu the mascot of Capcom is a BIT twisted, because he wasn't designed to be a company mascot, he's just the face of their most popular game. Using sales is not a correct way of determining who the mascot is. A Felyne would probably be a more appropriate as the Capcom mascot. Which is why you have a statue of a Felyne dressed in Mega Man armor for their 30th anniversary and not a Ryu Cat or a Mega Man Ryu or something.
Poor Captain Commando, not even Capcom remembers him.

Uh, pretty sure I never said that. The foundation of everything I said was based on Ryu being iconic to the point of similarity of Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, Mega Man. Where you can put him as the face of Capcom, kids can go to the store and get the game by character name etc. He just wasn't designed with the Mickey Mouse philosophy.

Ryu is one of Capcom's most iconic representatives, just as much as Mega Man is. He is the highest possible tier of leading mascots. He IS a face of Capcom.

None of this myopic "going to the store" nonsense, but in general popularity worldwide.

Totally off topic, but damn do I love that art.

If anything, SquareEnix, by virtue of possessing both Square and Enix would be the only other third party I could see two additions from that would make total sense. a DQ Hero and a Black Mage/Red Mage would be pretty nuts.

Nobody likes Red Mages. They are one of the worst classes ever in RPGs!

Besides, the Black Mage outfit is more easily recognisable.

Why are we discussing the validity of Ryu's relevancy? LOL

Dude's perfect for Smash; he is fighting games.

On a semi-relevant note, I'm listening to the various Street Fighter 2 soundtracks. Soooooo much good stuff they could choose from.

Ryu's Final Smash almost assuredly has to be one of his supers from his VS appearances.

His SFIV ultras would be massively wimpy comparatively speaking.

Personally, while I've often supported the idea of Black Mages as character to represent FF, I think what would be even cooler is picking a "generic" character (Chocobo, Moogle, or call him "Warrior of Light" or something if it's a human), and give him the ability to have different classes.
I've made a more in-depth suggestion for this in one of the Smash Bros. hype threads, but I feel like one single character or class wouldn't fully do justice to the FF franchise. The whole customization aspect of your characters' classes has been heavily part of the series ever since FF1, with only a few outliers (FF4 and 9 come to mind). In almost every FF title, you are able to change at least the spells and stat growth of your characters by applying Magicite or whatever else the respective games call it, if not classes entirely, since FF3.
So personally, I'd prefer that being somehow part of the FF character, if that ever happens. Black Mage, though, is probably the best choice for a single-moveset character.

But Red Mages have that bitchin' hat though!

Agreed about Black Mages though.

I'd personally rather the Slime family makes it in if we get DQ representation. We've got more than enough sword fighters.

Internationally I still think Layton would be a logical choice.

When is the Smash fan base going to GET this my God... A creative move set for a character will shine through regardless of them using pointy metal and can in fact be enhanced that much more either visually/animation wise or through straight up interactions with said pointy metal. What is it about swords that make people default to thinking "oh that character's just going to swing it and that's dull"? Have you no appreciation for crazy over the top Devil May Cry fight sequences? Old samurai movies? Medieval combat? Vikings and pirates? Magicians manipulating objects via magic fu or casting with them as a medium? Puppet characters with living swords? Lightsabers and force powers?!

Shit I just came up with all this at a moment's notice. I think Nintendo is full of people who could do far more interesting things thematically or mechanically. Why people keep parroting that line like swords are the most boring thing ever fascinates me as much as it makes me truly wince thinking about how loud the group of people thinking this way can be.

That said, I'm not against a Slime, I just liked that art.

My problem with that idea is that it sounds like the only way to do it justice is by making the character a transformation one like Pokemon Trainer, and when you do that people always gravitate to the better one while ignoring the rest (see Sheik in Melee).

I hope they don't do the Sonic thing and just make it a bunch of variants of Ryu's Theme/character themes through the years. Spread the love. All I know is if I can't Smash to Guile's Theme or True Love Making, you might as well not have the character in the game due to how much of a missed opportunity it is.

If you would've read my edit to the post I first discussed this with you on...
Look dude. There's several characters who are called "Ryu" in video games. Ryu is a fairly common name in Japan.
There's Ryu from Street Fighter, there's Ryu from Breath of Fire, there's Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden
(speaking of iconic game series, there's another one)
. And that's just from the top of my head, I'm sure there's plenty more.

Knowing this, there's a character file called "Ryu". Could you immediately identify which of those 3+ Ryus it is, just from reading the word "Ryu"?

Good think Shulk brought his trusty blade to Smash to up the count.

While I generally agree that "too many sword users" is silly on its surface, I think people would have a lot less of a problem if a wider range of sword skills were being utilized. Marth, Lucina and potentially Roy are similar enough that I can get why it would bother people if you had all three. Using Takamaru for example, if he ever made it into Smash that would be another sword user but at least that would be a katana - a type of sword and skillset not represented in Smash already.

dude who dumped files didn't know ryu = no one knows ryu

the logic, so logicky

The funny thing is, it's not that he didn't know Ryu. He didn't know which Ryu. Of course he has to confirm shit. What if he says "Yeah it's Ryu from Street Fighter" and then it turns out it was Ryu Hayabusa all along?

...The hacker is one person. He doesn't speak for everyone. I can cherry pick examples of people unfamiliar with Mega Man, too.

And that too.

This is something I touched on with my criticisms of Fire Emblem in Smash and reservations towards Roy jumping into the fray again. I feel like people would be both more accepting of both sword wielders and Fire Emblem lord newcomers if they weren't all asked to pose with Marth's sword and Photoshopped into his animations. Exaggeration of course, but it really needs to be addressed and fast. Sword play is my favorite in fighting games and Melee was a blessing in disguise for making a character (Marth) and game engine that made me really feel like I was fencing with opponents
(whenever I wasn't abusing force pull with dat grab)
. I would like to see far more involved styles of sword play and their own little intricasies and finesse get adapted into the Smash style of combat and I'm sure others would feel that way if they saw some crazy stuff from newcomers with swords. I just don't get why it's a harder sell for them even when everyone should know better.

The upper tier of third-party characters would include Sonic and Pac-Man. Mega Man and Simon Belmont are a big jump below them. You’d have to take another big leap to reach characters like Bomberman and Jack Frost. Characters that far down the ladder are a bit too obscure to warrant infiltrating Smash Bros.' hallowed
LOL
guest roster. That's all just my opinion, obviously, but I don't want the roster to start approaching Mugen/PlayStation All-Stars territory.

The hell? Bomberman has probably had more games on nintendo platforms than Megaman. Bomberman was very strong on SNES/N64/Gamecube and all handheld Nintendo Platforms outside of the 3DS.

He's hardly obscure. You would be hard pressed to find a gamer gaming since N64 or earlier who didn't know of him. Hell specially if you are a fan of the DS, for a while bomberman was one of the only decent multiplayer games at launch window.

Bomberman was so strong on nintendo platforms, it was pretty much the only platform they would launch adventure type bomberman games on.

Raging Demon would be great. Plenty of characters transform--he can just turn into E. Ryu for a second and zip across the stage like Marth or something. I mainly want it because having the whole stage go dark for a few seconds and then seeing the knockback would look really sick I think.

This to infinity. Agree with you so hard, it's the silliest argument I've seen around and man is it beginning to get tired.

I'm gonna list the entirety of sword users in the game, in alphabetical order:

Ike
Link
Lucina
Marth
Meta Knight
Mii Swordfighter
Robin
Shulk
Toon Link

This is being generous and counting Robin. That's 9 movesets...out of 51 in the game, DLC nonstanding.

Suppose Roy is indeed coming back. That'd make 10. But if we accept him, we also count Mewtwo, Lucas and Ryu.

10 out of 54 movesets, counting Robin and a Mii variation, use swords. Out of those, Marth and Lucina are clones. Link and Toon Link have enough differences IMO but let's count them as being similar enough to bother some people. Oh, and Roy, should he come back the same. That's, and speaking very generously, 5 movesets that involve swords and are cloned or similar...again, out of 54 movesets.

Something tells me the Sonic selections might be up with Sega, but who knows. In any case, I also wish that Ryu's Theme doesn't become the next DK Island Swing.

So far I think the essentials are the themes for Guile, Ken and Blanka. The ones for M. Bison, Chun-Li, Cammy and Akuma would be great, too. I'm hoping we get at least one arrangement (there's a theory that there being only one SF song in the 3DS files might mean the arrangement isn't finished yet).

He could have a neutral B mode change like Shulk to access Ken and Akuma's movesets like in the first Marvel vs. Capcom.

An arrangement or two would be great, doubly so if they got Yoko Shimomura to contribute something.

BUT IT'S ANOTHER SWORDMAN /s

I'm with you. Next time i'll argue that ''another fist fighter'' is in the game.

And guys what the fuck? Ryu is ze fighter character on the planet. If he is in Smash he just confirm it, by breaking the skull of freaking Mario AND Sonic. /glorious.

Well...
KH Chain of Memories (GBA)
KH DDD (3DS)
KH 358/2 (DS)
KH Re:Coded (DS)

The other 2 franchises have had more games on Nintendo systems...but in thinking about an actual character, what DQ or FF character would actually fit Smash more than Sora?

can't really think of one. Black Mage maybe...?
