The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - New screenshots

New screens:

Hmm, the butt wrap of Geralt's and the guy on the right are exactly the same.

really hope we can hide the UI. first time seeing it and I'm not really into it. Looks too rigid and "hey here are your stats!"

You can fully customize, hide it 100%.

Apparently tomorrow we will see new stuff from Witcher 3. Youtuber that went to Poland last week will post their videos (apparently they were allowed to record up to 45 minutes). They were playing game on PC with gamepad (K&M wasn't allowed)

Da fuk is going on in the skies there? Maybe related to the comet from TW2? I wonder if the plot will be saving the world this time around...

wasn't it a tease to the spectral riders instead of a comet fromt he witcher 2? I'm thinking that this is just a moon or some side effect of the spectral riders doing crazy shit in the sky.

They didn't model extra towel wraps, preorder canceled

Canceled indeed.

But on a serious note. They simulate the cloth physics rather well, one would think they would do something similar for the towel. But when I go into that bath house I will be looking at other objects anyway.

Would definitely like for it to be tomorrow.

Why would they want to hide the best graphics for this game? It doesn't make any sense.

I can see 2 possibilities.

1. They want to show settings that are closer to what the console versions will look like so that console players aren't disappointed when they FINALLY show those versions.....

2. They want to keep stringing people along thinking that ultra will look so much better than this "mix of ultra and high."

I just can't imagine that ultra will look all that much better than this. Then again... I think my expectations are lower than most.

If 1. was the case, they wouldn't be releasing downsampled pics.

Massive spoilers from book
I think this is some parallel world. Ciri and Wild Hunt have powers to travel between them.

Yeah, I read them all, doesn't look like it though. And I believe that this spoiler is for TW2 more than the books. But it certainly does look like the Wild Hunt is involved in this sky change.

I think that is upper right corner we have second planet/moon. I could be wrong and this is something else, but if I'm right answer to question "what place is that?" is simple :)

if you know anything about
ciri and the conjunction of spheres
then that provides some context.

And the one that the lady has on is similar to the one on Triss in the beginning of TW2.

I don't see the point of creating unique assets for such a minor, contextualized situation.

That was by no mean a complaint, I was looking at it, saw it, said it. No big deal. It was more of a joke.

Maybe Ultra with super sampling disabled (i.e relying on downsampling instead)

So that they can technically claim "but it's not even my final form" for those "downgrade" claims.

This is basically what I feel, that Ultra includes Ubersampling or some other equivalent rather than stuff like "increased draw distance".

CDP Red are very good at using colour in their settings. Looks great, it's kind of a stylized realism they're going for and I love their approach.

Well, that guy from Gamestar claimed that after switching the graphic options from High to Ultra increased vegetation, foliage, shadows, texture quality, and some other things too.. and Ubersampling this time should not be ready at the time of release of the game

Yeah, I've been kind of expecting (and hoping) that you'll get to go to the elves' alternate dimension. If that's the dimension though, it seems a lot tamer in tone than what I was expecting. It looks almost like Halo meets Fallout NV.

New shots look great and veg looks improved. Probs ultra.

It still all sounds very vague to me, and I don't trust preview impressions when we don't truly know what screenshots are being taken at. CDPR has been repeating the "mix of Ultra and High" rhetoric without specifying what's what while also stating they haven't truly shown Ultra and want people to be blown away on release.

I don't necessarily think they're lying, but mostly believe Ultra includes demanding settings related to resolution and anti-aliasing, expensive stuff that most people don't crank stupidly high if it comes at a cost of performance. Foliage, shadows, textures, etc; I cant see why they'd have superior settings to marketing material (supersampled marketing material at that) kept hidden for no good reason. Especially why they're also happy to demonstrate expensive effects like Hairworks.

CDPR occasionally has miscommunication between departments, so yeah, I just don't buy the idea that significant asset and effect related rendering settings have been kept on High for marketing material while Ultra has to wait until release. I can't think of any other developer/publisher doing this nor can see any advantage. I could maybe buy the theory that they want to keep polarity with a console release if Microsoft or Sony were publisher. But while they might have a promotion deal with the former publishing is done by neither. It's against Bandai Namco and Warner Bros interest to market a game looking worse than it supposedly does...but also at the same time having those worse settings shown in supersampled screenshots and 4K.

I'm running with the 4K screenshot they released. It seems to be a gameplay shot, HUD turned off, no fancy camera angling. With downsampling to 1080p, I can't see Ultra looking any better.

Well there is a white glow on edges of Geralt model which are contacting the shadow. This can be improved.

Hopefully we will finally see some actual console gameplay footage this week. The longer CD Projekt Red goes without revealing it, the more concerned I will be about the console version.

I would be very surprised if the difference was any more than we got with Dragon Age. PC version has better textures & shading, longer draw distance, and higher framerate. That's pretty much it. Otherwise I'm not expecting much of any difference between them.

I agree. It's all a bit weird. Although they have repeatedly said there is no downgrade too. So I guess we will see.

If my 3770k and SLI 970's can replicate that screenshot at 4K and 30fps I will be more than happy.

That's what I also believe, but all this time without showing console gameplay is an major red flag, that I just can't ignore. I'm not too concerned about graphics, my concern is about framerate and texture pop-ins.

I'm hoping to see major improvement in the ground textures. It seems like that shot is missing POM and the ground textures look totally flat. It could also use better AO such as HBAO+, which I believe the game will support. Fingers crossed!

With a game of this scale, I'm not expecting POM on every random ground texture. I'm expecting shit like that is probably going to look exactly the same on ultra as it does in that shot.

It probably is flat and there's been no evidence of Wild Hunt using POM.

Well there it is.

Yeah, expecting certain areas to receive more love than others, but not ever single spot in this absolutely gigantic world map is going to be uber detailed. Even on Ultra. It will still look amazing overall though.

GTAV/modern game expectations I guess, even if it's not realistic.

Wild Hunt is a huge project made by a lot of people. But it's important to step back and be realistic every once in awhile. The engine looks great but CDPR aren't exactly known for being a graphical powerhouse. They never have been, and while The Witcher 2 is stunning much of that can be attributed to the gorgeous art. They've never been the kind of developer, like Crytek, advertising themselves as using every cutting edge rendering technique possible.

GTAV accomplishes insane detail because they've the engine and genre experience nobody else has, and unmatched manpower. GTAV on PC is gorgeous, but it's unrealistic to expect everything in that across to Wild Hunt. Especially considering GTAV technically already released and then had extended development for bells and whistles. Wild Hunt only just went gold.

Plus CDPR focuses detail on parts they believe more important and realistic within their workload. They talk about it in their Gamespot interview, how for villages (for example) they carefully build them relative to the topography that was there first rather than the village first then the topography. They pay attention to what kind of NPCs are in the region, their jobs, relative to what environmental stuff is nearby. The slope of the land, forests, streams, mud, etc. That's where they focus their attention and artistry.

You're going to get flat surfaces in every game. That's just part and parcel of video games.

Those look great. Can't wait!

Question though; I'm going to be away from May 7th to the 19th. I was going to buy TW3 and play it as soon as I got back, but I haven't played TW2. Should I? Should I play 1 as well? I know they aren't necessary, but I feel like 3 will have a more meaninful payoff story-wise if I do.

This shot gave me the impression that they definitely are using a combination of POM and/or tessellation. May be I'm wrong

Ignored the bottom left as it seemed like actual 3d modeled rocks (though I might be wrong about that too)

Probably just rock assets similar to The Witcher 2, which had a lot of smaller ground geometry that streams in at high detail when close then rapidly reduces LOD (right down to billboards) when distancing. From memory tinkering in the TW2 editor they're handled similarly to foliage.

You'd be fine with viewing The Witcher 1 Retrospective on YouTube. Try playing The Witcher 2 if you have the time. I'd also recommend reading the short stories; Sword of Destiny & The Last Wish to get a better understanding of Geralt's background and the world.

CDPR has stated that the prologue for the Witcher 3 will bring you up to date with the current state of affairs in the game, and should be easy to understand for newcomers.

Replaying The Witcher 2 right now in preparation for this and TW3 is a generational leap over TW2. TW2 has aged pretty bad over the years. I can't believe how good these screens look.

I've been on the fence about building a PC recently, but I think this game has pushed me over the edge. I'm going to order parts this week.

Hopefully we can revisit the bathhouse.

Also, I hope monster contracts can be infinite. Hopefully it has repeatable random events . I also hope we at least have a cool place to stay for a temporary home.

Expecting to see a media blowout of sorts in the next 12 hours. Loads of youtubers getting their recorded gameplay footage ready. Even heard some of them are sitting on the elusive "ultra" footage. Can't wait!
