They're playing the beta build, right? Not the final (release) version of the game.
Just as stated on the video description.

It's very close to final, just a few glitches and bugs that had to be addressed.

They said there was an issue with coming in and out of water, but that has since been fixed.

(Random)
The things i hate about "gaming" in general is when concepts/objects etc, are placed into the world/s and the player cannot interact or utilize for the purpose and justification of having it.
eg:
Fishing Rod

Let me go fishing god damn it!

Specially Openworld games like this. Can't i just sit back and kick my boots up after a hard day Hunting and catch a fucking demon shark.. is that so much to ask?!?!

Ok, ok... Fair enough.
But i at least better be able to fondle a Mermaid!

You can. But the mermaid is actually a dugong.

So is there an embargo on when they can upload the second parts to videos? I assumed we'd have a lot more videos coming out after the first ones this morning but it seems pretty dry after that.

How many videos do you think they recorded? I doubt they all split them up into multiple videos. Unless I'm understanding it wrong, I really don't think there will be that much more.

Game looks phenomenal and I'm sure it'll be one of my favorites of the year.

However, that pop in... It's the one visual blemish that I find incredibly distracting in any game. And that's it running on ultra? Looks beautiful outside of that but man, that was my main issue with TW2's visuals as well.

Seems to be the biggest problem with recent open world games. You can see so far, and the rest of the game is so incredible visually, that the pop-in becomes the biggest visual blemish.

Witcher 3 seems to be about on-par with GTA V in terms of pop-in, I wouldn't call it awful, but it's definitely noticeable. Just something that we have to deal with considering the current state of games and what can be achieved. It'll be still many, many years before we have the compute power to see pop-in disappear to a really solid degree.

Still some pop in visible here and there in the fields when he's riding his horse.. Have they showed the ps4 version or is it just PC?.

Every open world game I've ever played has had pop-in, including recent games like AC Unity, GTA5 and Far Cry 4. It is very difficult to eliminate pop-in completely.

Personally, I'm pretty impressed with how little pop-in there is in The Witcher 3, considering how densely detailed it is and how fast you move across the landscapes on horseback.

In this GamertagRadio podcast the developers claim that literally every single tree and art asset is individually placed by a designer or artist...

I find this incredibly hard to believe considering this game uses Speed Tree, no?

My gta has no pop in

Yes but the graphics in GTA vs this? Ahem...

I honestly can't see what pop in you guys are talking about as well. I suppose that's just cause I never really notice it. The only thing I notice is significant frame drops of which I'm sure this game seems to be very able.

I recently played through the witcher 2 with full uber mode and some extra graphics mods like huge distant foliage and stuff and my comp smashed it at an awesomely smooth frame rate except for the bit in act 2 where the harpies are in that canyon part... I have never understand why that part of the game crunched and not others especially because there was nothing visible on screen to make it slow down except for the sky which was completely empty!?

Anyway I'm hoping, absolutely hoping so much to play w3 maxed in every way. I'll be sad if I have to disabled hairworks.

Your PC GTA, that was released and refined for two years after it initially came out on consoles, does have minimized pop-in, yes.

Considering CDProjekt's history of releasing Enhanced Edition's, allowing for mods and patching their game heavily after release, I think that nagging issues such as pop-in in a streaming, open-world shouldn't be a big concern. This is a ~400 person team releasing on three different platforms, so some kinks should be expected. If it does bother you a lot, though, I'd definitely recommend holding off for a bit until the inevitable patches come (and you can probably grab it for cheaper, too).

I thought they've said before that much of the world was procedural generation that was touched up by their designers.

I'm expecting at least 1 more from Gopher. There are others who haven't even released their videos, such as Melonie Mac. No idea when they plan to release their videos. Hopefully soon.

Name an open-world game without pop in.

Go on, I'll wait.

Yeah...you'll be waiting a looong time for that. I've never played an open world game without pop-in. On current hardware it's just inherent to how they work and the huge number of assets that have to be steamed into memory and rendered on screen.

I feel like a lot of people are nitpicking this game. Some are doing it because they are fans of other games and they feel they need to downplay this game to bring their favorite game up. Most others though are just very excited for this game and want it to be perfect, so it gets placed under a microscope and expectations start to become unrealistic.

Damn, I should have used that mod with my replay of TW2.

And to be quite frank, the foliage there is looking much better within the world of TW2 then TW3's does.

The foliage in the current videos ranges from acceptable to sticking out like a sore thumb.

Speedtree can be used to just create the tree itself, not place it. They can have both.

May have missed discussion but what's with the foliage LOD popin in the ultra vid? Goes from super obvious billboard to fairly detailed when Geralt is right next to plants, several times.

EDIT: Ah, so I see I'm not the only one who hasn't been impressed with the foliage.

Holy cow, he's dead in one hit.

Anyway, I do agree with him though. TW2 foliage is kinda better, with more lush and bigger trees, especially Flotsam forest. Or perhaps there'll be an area with lush forest just like that one in Witcher 3 later though.

I didn't necessarily mean that TW2's foliage is better but that it fits the TW2 graphical framework better then TW3's foliage does.

The quality of everything in TW3 is extremely, which makes the foliage quality even more noticeable.

Edit: And the video posted kind of proves my point. The shadows and lighting are great and the foliage is pretty dense. However, the quality of the actual sprites, not so much.

Going to try this mod when my second 970 comes out. EatChildren said it is quite the performance hog, and as far as I can tell from that thread there was never any improvement possible because of its brute force methods.

Being that I am playing at 4K I don't want to install it until my second card comes in and I can afford some frames.

Well, Speedtree can be utilized in different ways. It could be that the actual trees/foliage are being drawn via procedural process, touched up and then the world building is still being done by an artist who decides where those trees will go.

You guys need to go back and play TW2 if you think the foliage is better in that. Grass render distance in TW2 is horrendous.

(I'm talking non-modded of course)

this game has made me not be able to play anything else in anticipation. Everything else just feels so boring. This game needs to come out already.

Some Witcher 2 foliage.

The main reason why you get the flat sprite foliage in TW3 is mostly due to how huge the world is, and how much more draw distance the game has to handle.

The render distance in TW2 is pretty bad, but you don't get clumps of grass sprites that look like they were placed quickly with an editor (giving it that gamey look). But that's the difference between linear games with very enclosed maps, and huge open world games with a ton of terrain to fill.

It looks great in screenshots but it's incredibly distracting at times while playing. It may not be as lush in TW3 but at least it's not materializing into existence 20 feet away...

I finished my TW2 playthrough last night using my mod at 1080p on single 970 GTX and performance was pretty damn great except for chapter 2 when it tanked fucking hard, and some tiny dips here and there. Solution I think would be to not use the foliage distance rendering ini tweak (I mentioned them in the readme) as high as I did, which I think was around 5.

Did anyone catch what level the Earth Elemental was? And also what level Geralt was in that fight?

It's really hard to make out, but the earth elemental looks like it might be level 22, and Geralt is level 12.

As someone who has read up to the current end of the English released books it's excellent to see the characters that are getting some love in this game.

Seriously it sounds like it's going to be the perfect witcher story game to me. The other two games are like minor disputes compared to the events that are happening in wild hunt, which is just how it should be and damn I'm excited by it.

Just cause 2 has zero pop in and a massive draw distance, it uses some very clever tricks and it makes the game look very consistent and awesome.

But I've already seen you move goalposts in reply to gta5 pc so w/e

Witcher 3 seems to be suffering from some nasty pop in, it is what it is.

I don't know why you keep calling them sprites. The foliage in the game is definitely geometry and alpha textures. If they were sprites they would exhibit billboarding and would always face perpendicular to the camera. I don't see any of that. The tree leafs also exhibit self shadowing, which wouldn't be present if they were sprites.

I honestly think the foliage looks pretty damn good. I've never seen any game with this much foliage. Nor any with this much dynamic foliage. The fact that it also exhibits translucency and specularity makes it all the more impressive.

I'm sorry, I find the complaints about the grass to be pretty ridiculous when the best looking competing open world games have grass that looks like this:
