GOG is best known for its library of classic games — it was originally called Good Old Games — but last year the company announced a new venture that would put it in direct competition with PC gaming behemoth Steam. Called GOG Galaxy, the service is an online gaming platform that includes Steam-like community features and tools like auto-updates to keep your games up to date without any hassle. But the key selling point is that Galaxy includes these features while still ensuring every game can be played offline with no DRM. It was originally supposed to launch last year, but today the platform is finally available in open beta so you can try it out.

Galaxy's social features include things like a friends list, in-game chat, and achievements, and select games will even support cross-platform multiplayer, so that you can play with your friends whether they bought the game from GOG or Steam. GOG is keen to boast that all of the added features are entirely optional; auto-updates, for example, can be turned off or reversed if a patch happens to break a game. "Making it optional is the best motivation for us to make it better," says VP of online technologies Piotr Karwowski. "We want it to be so good that you'll actually want to use it." The service will also let you download a local, DRM-free version of any game you own to keep as a backup.

According to GOG, the service currently has a library of more than 1,000 games, with plans to expand that significantly, particularly when it comes to big-budget blockbusters. The first big game to support the platform will be The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which will be coming out on May 19th. "We're getting ready to release and fully support even more AAA titles in the future," says Karwowski. GOG Galaxies is open beta now on both Windows and Mac, and you can sign up for it right here.

The download and sign up link just disappeared from the site so they might be updating it.

EDIT: The sign up link has returned.

"GOG Galaxy offers friends list, game time tracking, achievements, and chat. "

"it’s all optional. Automatic updating can be disabled for any game; but if you leave it on and a patch breaks something, GOG Galaxy will offer its rollback feature to restore a previous version of the game. Gamers can also download a standalone, DRM-free backup copy of every game, so keeping purchases safe is easier than ever."

Sounds great.

I've been in the closed beta for a bit. It's definitely still early days, but I'm glad to have the client over just the website.

I do wish that the client had the same full box covers in the library view that the website does. That's one of my favorite things about GOG and one I wish Steam would steal.

Nice, hope a significant number of people will use this, and GOG should keep growing their customer base.

Hope this works out well for GOG.

Would be nice if one day new pc releases on gog were a matter of course instead of a pleasant surprise. Auto-update functionality may help convince a lot of devs who end up in eternal beta

I really liked how Aliens vs Predators beta had the "client" very minimal and only booted up an "auto-update Window." Once that was checked and cleared it simply booted up like PC titles of old. No need for a "Steam client" client thing to boot the game from.

If GOG Galaxy still has that mode, I think I'd prefer GOG over Steam on that.

Oh, nice! I hope that once this gains traction, more users, and consequentially, more games make their way to GOG.

Looks like they sent the press release some hours early, I can see the new Galaxy page on the website but it's incomplete.

Here's the UI with my account name censored. I got mine through the beta key that GOG emailed me one or two weeks ago.

I'm really liking the look of it judging by the galaxy page. Hopefully it encourages me to actually play those games I own on GOG.
Not likely.

Considering how pro=consumer GOG is compared to literally everything else, I'll try it when it finishes coming out.

I wish more devs would give GOG a shot, hopefully this gives them a bit more publicity.

So when they talk about multiplayer is it only new titles or have they also hooked up something to older games with deprecated servers ala Game Ranger?

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like
Finally!

I been anticipating this for so long now since the announcement and I hope this encourages game publishers to release more current games on GOG as it's the only platform I'm currently invested in and don't own a single game on Steam yet.

Would love to support GOG and try this out as a Steam replacement but in-home streaming has taken me in its clutches.

Is there any talk of Galaxy adding the same sort of feature in the future? Or could Nvidia Gamestream perform the same job for me (ie stream steam and non-steam games)?

This is great. I honestly will sometimes go months completely forgetting that 1) I even have a GoG library, and 2) what's in said GoG library. Having a client will give me easier access to that part of my backlog (and by backlog I mean my library of older games that I played back in the day on disk on my 286 PC and bought on GoG).

It looks fine and all, but jesus christ these game service platforms... Steam, Origin, BattleNet, Uplay, RS Social Club, WB Play, Xbox on Windows, now Galaxy, each with their own game selections, friend lists and features... I'd be willing to pay for someone to come along to unify all these services and have it in one spot. And no, just adding links to steam isn't the solution, Big Picture doesn't work, some stuff won't launch at all, etc.

this is the closed Alpha.

Oh it is? /check my email

Yes it is the closed Alpha haha. Well it works fine for me although the speed average 300KBps for me when downloading Bad Mojo Redux. My location is at South East Asian region and the good part is you can launch the game without the client running after you have completed the installation.

Not sure for other games but I believe it should be.

Steam - OK
Origin/Uplay - Not touching it unless It's mandatory to play a EA/Ubi game
R* Social Club - it's not a store, R* release very few games.
WB Play - I didn't even know it existed
Xbox on Windows - Cool, I'm already using it on xbox.

So, in the end I'm using 2 Pc services: Steam and Galaxy and one cross platform: Xbox.
I can deal with it. Competition is good.

People always complain about this, but I really don't see the big deal.

One click, auto sign in, all on my taskbar at the bottom.

Now to wait for the Trillian of digital distribution services...
...

I can't believe I never thought of this. A client that replaces all these individual clients and reduces them to "account logins" would be a godsend at this point.

Between Steam, GOG Galaxy, UPlay, Origin, B.net and a handful of smaller clients (Desurium, Gamestop etc), we are quickly reaching the saturation point like in the instant messenger wars years ago.

I wonder if someone will disrupt that in the future like the Facebook/whats app/Skype wombo combo did to make dedicated instant messaging through PC clients basically obsolete.

Anyone know if you can download Windows game files on the Linux version of the client? (If there is a Linux version.) Linux Steam won't. :(

Been using it for a couple days and I quite like it. Once they get everything they plan to implement to work then this will be a great client to diverge some consumers from Steam.

I use Big picture a lot, so in Steam it's easy, whatever I launch in big picture, knows it's on the TV and fullscreens there, and usually doesn't need any mouse clicks. All other stuff always needs manual switching and numerous mouse clicks, and walks over to my PC to get right. I know I'm not a typical user, and it's kind of my fault to have hundreds of games spread on different services, but it just sucks that there isn't a way to consolidate all the lists. I'd be fine with just having one unified friends list at least, that would allow me to join or vice versa.

Also, Origin is a massive resource hog, and I don't want to have it running in background all the time.

Linux version will come later; they haven't specified when. The Mac version is out already, so hopefully soon.

I've been enjoying revisiting AvP 2000. So good, and the client isn't even the least bit intrusive. Hope this works out well for them.

Someone seriously needs to do this because I'm tired of having a gazillion clients. But if I was going to support any big company it'd be GOG if they can get feature-parity with Steam (including Big Picture Mode because shit breaks in Steam if you add games from other services like you said). Though hopefully Valve just adds an option for games to be DRM-free and promotes it like they did with Full Controller Support so I can just stick with them.

You can download Mac and Linux game files on the Windows version so I assume they would have that function once the Linux client came out.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
The initial client they had in the closed alpha was pretty rough, but it's improved rapidly and is at a point where it's actually really nice to have. I'm curious to see some of the features outside of just being able to manage one's library, though.

In any case, this can only be a good thing for GOG.

This is why I don't bother buying a game if it isn't either on Steam or DRM free. This GOG client throws a wrench in my plans though as it's a client for games that are DRM free. I'll probably use it to manage my games but not actually run it unless I'm installing a new game, buying a game, or needing to update a game. I'll continue to add my GOG games to my steam client and run them from there.

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
Happy about this... I kinda hate steam so this is welcomed.
