Besides Metal Gear, Konami is dead long time ago:

- PES is mediocre since the end of the PS2 gen
- Castlevania (classic one) is dead since the DS
- They FUCKING KILLED HUDSON
- Contra is completely dead
- Gradius is completely dead

Again, if you remove Metal Gear, Konami is not relevant anymore in the gaming space. I remember when they were one of the best devs on the PS2. What a shame.

I completely agree with you on all your points…

The problem here is that PT is technically a demo and not a game, so they can pull a demo from your download list without any legal (or other) issues…

I remember a lot of times that older game demos got pulled from psn store, especially after sony implemented bandwidth volume charges to publishers and game developers…
(for example Valkyria Chronicles demo, Crysis 2 demo or MGS 4 demo on PS3, but there are a lot more older demos that got pulled from psn from their creators)

Demos can still be redownloaded if they're on your download list.

(Apologies if I came off as harsh, I just feel strongly about this)

And how much do you think this backlash has cost Konami?

Probably not a lot in the grand scheme of things. When your main source of generating revenue/profits is now in gambling nonsense, video games don't really matter a whole lot. At this point, it's quite obvious that Konami doesn't give a s*it about video games and any of us for that matter. It's sad. It's frustrating. But it's the current reality.

Fuck Konami. Hideo Kojima may be the last bastion of their old guard left, and we all know he's gone by the end of the year, too.

Nobuya Nakazato is still there somewhere, I think. He moved up and out of game development but he had a lot to do with Contra, Rocket Knight and Vandal Hearts, among other games.

Calling P.T. one of the best horror games of all time is a tad hyperbolic...

More so considering that it's barely even able to call itself a game. It's not even indie-level in terms of content. It's a wonderful combination of visuals, sound design, and clever randomly-generated triggers, but not much more than that, and doesn't ask a lot of interaction from the player.

I suspect the the main reason this article exists is so that Kotaku can take advantage of Konami's bad guy status to look like the good guy for a day, and it's working.

There are games with less player interaction that have won awards, I don't really think it's too presumptive to call PT a game on at least some level. But I guess this all delves into the "are walking simulator's games or not?" debate, which is pretty off topic.

Klepek's been pretty fawning of PT even before he was at Kotaku, so I'm inclined to believe he actually does feel this way.

*shrug*

Konami has sucked for multiple generations. Kind of sad that it took the delisting of a prototype/demo for a cancelled game for someone of any high profile site to say much of anything about it.

Yep! Konami cares only about gambling, and it's really sad.

This simply isn't true. Their fitness centers are doing very well, they're still in the trading card business, and they are actively involved in arcade cabinet construction.

They're just leaving the console gaming business. I understand that's what a lot of people here like, but it isn't as if Konami is unique amongst Japanese companies in gradually migrating away from those platforms. Some have gone to handhelds; some have gone to mobile; still others have left significantly as Konami is apparently doing.

Konami has pretty much been dead to me since they killed Suikoden and went all necrophilic with its corpse. So, welcome to my world.

Western rabid anti-Konami fans, please stop 'raiding' official Konami bemani and other YouTube videos with your Silent Hill nonsense. Comments now disabled by default.

Oh boo-hoo. Konami deserves it and youtube comments are worthless anyways.

If I can Paypal Kojima $140 for a copy of MGS V PS4 and PC so that he'll get the entirety of his royalty from it, I will do it.

It's a shame Konami will still see some of my money.

Eh, if you read through to the end of the article, he admits to the flaws of PT and I felt he justified why PT deserves to be preserved, instead of disappearing as it is right now. While he does claim it as the best horror game (and links to the article where he justifies that position), I feel that point is rather ancillary to the discussion.

And as mentioned already, Patrick's talked quite a bit about PT while he was still with Giant Bomb.

We have zero evidence that much of a game existed to begin with. PT was cool but a full game was not going to be like that with a major TV actor involved. Konami has been announcing major games way too early since MGS4 was revealed in 2005. This game was probably not going to be worked on in earnest until MGS V went gold. It wouldn't have come out until 2017 and the people that would have made it a great game will not be there anymore.

If there is any justice, it will be that Konami will no options left for exploiting the franchise. Nothing will get people as excited again as what PT did, and any Downpour-esque outsource job will be laughed at and ignored. The franchise is functionally dead at this point. What Metal Gear gets turned into in the years to come will be the real horror show. You had a good run, Japan.

I wish they didn't murder the only good line of castlevania games (the GBA and DS ones). The shit that replaced it makes me physically ill. And the console AAA games are so bad and such a wasted opportunity. I think I'm on the Fuck Konami bandwagon now that I think about it.

Klepek's been pretty fawning of PT even before he was at Kotaku, so I'm inclined to believe he actually does feel this way.

Ayup, since it came out he has had an extreme love towards PT, and the only thing he really disliked was how obtuse the final puzzle got.

Exactly. As someone who can't stand Metal Gear I haven't given a shit about Konami in years. Their classic games are great, but their modern output has been crap for a long time now.

You know its kind of nice that im no longer considered the crazy guy screaming about how the sky is falling.

But man, it would have really been nice if at least the games media had realized all this before everything was completely covered in six feet of shit.

it still bothers me that sites like Kotaku put up the opinions of the people who work there.

? It bothers you that a prominent games blog publishes opinion pieces??
Honest to God, man. This is the least graceful exit from the video games industry I've seen that doesn't involve Phil Fish.

I'm still laughing about this, four minutes after I read it.

Was Hideo involved in the MG universe from the very beginning?
I... just... no words for this one.

How does the face likeness stuff usually work in vidya business?
Could the removal be because of Norman Reedus' contract too?

Konami Fiasco:
- First abandoned Suikoden
- Failed to make proper Yu-Gi-Oh! game
- Ruined Castlevania
- Terrible Silent Hills HD Collcetion
- Killed Hudson
- Cancelled Bomberman 3DS
- Firing Kojima
- Cancelled next Silent Hills and removed PT

Konami is the worst Japanese company since last generation.

Konami, man why you gotta do this?

People loved you back when Silent Hills was announced and MGSV got a release date.
Now you've gone and thrown it all away with this rebranding processes and company shake ups and possibly mass lay offs.

Was all this necessary to go back into mobile games and slot machines?

I was going to say worst worldwide but no you're right, there's some publishers that do shady stuff and crap up games while in this case it's simply that they're actively trying to erase themselves from existence as far as video games are concerned.

I'm still angry, we still haven't gotten Zone of the Enders 3

Where was Patrick's article when Konami killed off every other franchise they had?

The point is pretty clear. Konami can cancel games and franchises as much as they want. But they are taking a piece of gaming history away forever for no apparent reason. They are taking steps to ensure that no one new gets to ever play P.T. In the age of digital distribution, we really can't allow this to go unchallenged.

Honestly, Konami and Capcom are on the same level to me now (though Capcom isn't as bad right now, I'd say). Both were amazing before last gen, and now... now they're just disappointments. It's a shame considering how much I used to love both companies.

Meanwhile, SE had a very disappointing previous gen (although I personally really do like Final Fantasy XIII), but they've definitely picked themselves back up. I wish Capcom and Konami followed in SE's footsteps.

Capcom has its problems, but it's still releasing great portable titles like MH4G and the Ace Attorney series. Monster Hunter will keep doing well for a long while I think.
Dragon's Dogma was also very well received, and Street Fighter always does well too (I loved IV and V is looking great).

And Konami has... what? Metal Gear, and that's basically it, and the last good game in that series was made by PlatinumGames.

I'm upset about the total withdrawal of Bemani in the US. We really unceremoniously got dropped on consoles as we transitioned to PS3 and now the current gen. Now it's all Japanese arcade cabinets and mobile apps. Can't blame them for not continuing a business that probably didn't work out so well, but I can easily blame that failure at their weak-ass approach.
