Interesting, I wonder if it's to iron out the issues. I had lots of connection errors when I tried to get a match, though it was surprisingly pleasant to retry (just mash A once or twice and you're good)

There's nothing to nerf so I would be surprised if they did. Besides nobody that has played for less than 3 hours can give them any useful information regarding how items stack against each other.

Turf War fans around the world will have a single hour to test their skills, starting at 3PM PDT on Saturday, May 23rd. The point of those beta test isn't to get stats from people who played 1~3 hours, it's to get mass data regarding the teams balance on hundreds of games.
