Witcher 3 PC Performance Thread

Anyone know how to fix the character pop-in? I get characters popping in right in my face all the time and that's with less than 10 characters on screen.
"Number of Background Characters" is set to Ultra.

Happens to me sometimes. Resetting the game seems to fix it.

As EatChildren noted, it seems every patch these things get slightly more noticeable.

I'm having an issue with the game on windowed mode that I can't figure out. The game's running at 60fps but appears to be stuttering. I'm doing borderless window + no v-sync + RTSS 60 FPS lock. MSI Afterburner shows the frametimings to be a pretty consistent 60 even when the stuttering occurs.

Anyone got any advice?

Man, after such a long time with no crashes I get a sudden BSOD (my first ever on Windows 8/8.1) and then after rebooting I got a GPU driver crash within ten minutes.

I was using the latest Nvidia drivers but decided to go back to the GTA5 ones. It's been smooth sailing so far, and I can finally have hardware acceleration back on in Chrome, thank god.

Is anyone else getting this crazy banding?

Oh YIKES!

Haven't had any serious performance issues back on my Phenom IIx4 + GTX670 setup and have since moved to DDR3 at 8GB and an FX 8350

Made it to the little camp that offers sacrifices to the ladies of the wood and my frame rate tanked around the huge bonfire. Down to the 20s!

Normal?

It can drop there yeh, how far was the drop? 10fps or so is probably normal.

As much as I adore this game the engine is still a hilariously/depressingly inconsistent sack of shit from time to time. I still get constant stuttering problems on random boots of the game, solvable only by exiting and launching again, sometimes restarting. LOD transitions I swear get worse or at least more bizarre with each patch. I can stand looking at two buildings side by side, walk backwards and watch the one on the right have its shadows transition between various quality tiers, while the one on the left seems to only have two; full shadow or horrible dithered transition to nothing. I can walk towards an NPC and see his gutter quality texture until the HQ version pops in at the last minute, and then walk backwards and see that HQ version stay for longer.

*shrug* It's like the engine just fucking chokes constantly and has no idea how to utilise hardware.

Yeah since the last patch I get a strange periodic heartbeat like stutter when I first walk into an area heavy with NPCs. This never occurred prior 1.05 any hitch was an isolated singular occurrence with prior versions. Today I was playing, walked into a village where the every few second stutter started happening, walked to an inn keeper, played qwent, and when I finished the hitching completely disappeared. It's frustrating because you know it isn't a hardware limitation.

Any good programs for AMD cards that you can use to force Double Vsync?
ATI Tray Tools doesn't have the option as far as I can see
RadeonPro forces MLAA globally and I cannot change the setting *at all* so that goes away too

Using RSS the game ran at around 14 FPS after I set the lock to 30 and it also hardlocked my computer when I tried to switch from Borderless to Full Screen.

If not, fuck it, I'll just run unlocked, it's a pretty smooth ride in the open world as it is.

Edit: Ugh, now MLAA is on by default. Fucking RadeonPro piece of crap :(. Catalyst Center can't disable it either because it *crashes* the instant you try to change anything. CCC has always been shit though so that's no surprise.
Edit #2: Clicking Defaults fixed that issue at least, hooray :).

So is there any more information about the camera movement and character movement being locked on a 16.6 ms system, resulting in delay/input lag when panning the camera and delay in character movement for anyone who doesn't run it at a 60 fps and 16.6 ms (or greater and smaller)? Is this something that can be patched soon?

Never got this method to work, I get a much smoother setup with fullscreen, vsync and RTSS 60 cap.

I had the same issue as you where, no mater what, no vsync resulted in mad stuttering.

Hmm, I hadn't noticed it before. But that shader looks nice.

heh, in a game so beautiful it has me stopping to admire the sky all the time - i notice banding a lot. ;)

the dithering / "screen-door effect" occurs less often, and i can't even recall off the top of my head where i notice it most [during dissolves and scenes involving heavy spell effects and/or use of transitioning transparencies maybe?].

and yes, that shader looks very nice - will have to start tinkering with things myself.

My gpu usage just shot up in Velen, east of Oxenfurt. from East Tayiar going south I'm hitting full gpu usage and frame rate drops with vsync at 1920x1080, in game time 3am clear night.

Almost everything on ultra apart from foliage visibility to high hair works off, aa on, hbao+. Setting shadows to high helps but damn this looks taxing.

Been playing for over 40 hours and it's the 1st time I've experienced this in on the 980 ti

Cpu i7 4770k

Would anyone else using this card be able to test this area out?

I have downloaded patch 1.06 and the weight mod from http://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/3/? seems to have stopped working for me. I have reapplied it but no luck.

Can any one else running this mod check to see if there is a problem for you with this new patch.

Edit: My weight was saying 120/200, though I was over encumbered so I dropped an item and it seemed to fix the issue.

If you're hacing stuttering issues:

In-game vsync off
driver vsync on
triple buffering on
pre-rendered frames 1
full-screen
rtss frame limit 60

On a 970 here with perfect 16.6ms frame timing.

Hotfix 1.06 is out. Changelog:

- Fixes the endless loading screen when fighting the Ice Giant during the quest 'Lord of Undvik'
- Geralt's clothes will no longer be wet after leaving the menu
- The gate in the crypt now works correctly during the quest 'Scavenger Hunt: Viper School Gear'
- Fixes the lack of interaction with Roche on Oxenfurt Bridge in the quest 'Get Junior'
- Fixes an issue that prevented players from creating more than one item via Crafting/Alchemy

Not that many fixes (its only a hotfix), but essential nontheless.

The triple buffering option in nv cpl is only for opengl. You have to alt tab out of your game in dx to get triple buffering(it works in gta v at least)

If your on GTX 980 ti I recommend upgrading your CPU if your on i5 to i7 you will get further performance improvements, this game seems to take advantage of hyper threading runs really smooth with it

Did the frame limit through nvidia inspector instead and with driver vsync it does work way better, thanks, much more stability and less fluctuations.

Can you seriously not use DSR with nvidia SLI? I upgraded to dual titan X to be able to render 4k more efficiently yet now I can't even choose DSR in Nvidia control panel.

Wtf? This extra titan is almost pointless if I can't even render higher resolutions with SLI!

I think it is DSR + SLI + GSync that isn't supported.

DSR + SLI = works
DSR + GSync = works
DSR + GSync + SLI = does not work

Yep. I just figured that out. I'll be returning my asus xb270hu for that reason. I'll likely get the 4k monitor p, although maybe I'll get a 4k TV instead. I'm not seeing any tearing or stuttering while playing 4K DSR on my hdtv, at least while playing Witcher 3 and everything maxed at 4k resolution.

Not sure what happened, but 1.06 affected my performance pretty bad. I'm feeling stutters, and i'm not rock solid 30fps anymore. Any way to revert back to 1.05?

EDIT: So i'm not exactly sure what the patch did, but I fixed the problem by simply deleting my setting in RTSS and redoing it. Now it's smooth once more.

Even though DSR might not work but have you tried just creating a custom 4K res and using that with SLI+GSYNC?

So what settings are people with an r9 290 using?

I'd imagine a little below a 970.

I go for 1080/60, and I use:

Hariwroks off, all PP on (motion blur off), everything on ultra except Shadows, Foliage, Grass on high.

I score 50-60 in towns and 60 in most open world environments.

I'd imagine you might have to turn a few settings down to high to get the same, but it won't be too far off.

The game is smoother for me at fullscreen. Set max pre rendered frames to 1 and force vsync through drivers.

Ok, thanks! Is it still recommended to use a framelimiter other than the one provided in-game to remove stuttering? I remember reading something about this.

wait wait wait

I noticed the 770 vs PS4 video...

Does this mean my 670 actually runs The Witcher WORSE than the PS4 version? I've never seen it drop lower than 28fps with most stuff high/very high and NPC and details at ultra (grass distance medium, and density at medium).

If so...fuck. Outside this game, I've run every multiplatform title better than the PS4 equivalent. Maybe I'm taking crazy pills...

edit: Oh I'm going crazy. Its the 750Ti lol. Nevermind, carry on.

Anyone have a bug where water effects are basically ABSENT in Skellige? Like it's just a flat, unreflective surface, literally looks like the water in GTA 3.

Alright I just meditated and now it's back to being 3d waves with reflections and such. Hopefully the problem doesn't surface again (no pun intended).

It doesn't work. I tried a custom 1440p but curiously the testing never works.

That sucks... But I'm curious, what exactly happens when you test the custom resolution? Do you just get a black screen or can't enable GSYNC after selecting the custom resolution etc?

Yup I've seen that happen a couple of times too. I though it was just the time of day as I've mostly seen it happen when it's foggy but sometimes when it's clear too, looks really bad tbh.

Seems related to travelling between the zones. It happened when I went back to Velen, and then lo and behold, meditated for a few hours and poof, beautiful water again. Weird but not a major issue.

Yes a black screen, no signal coming. But if I disable G-sync it works perfectly.

Edit: in fact you can disable G-sync, create your custom resolution, apply it and then active G-sync.

1.06 really hampered performance for me, my 980ti cant even hold a steady 60 on the woods no more, that's crazy, it was incredibly smooth at 1.05

Mostly everything ultra except Grass, Distance and shadows. Reducing shadow quality doesn't really change anything on my screen.

I'm running similar but Harworks on and AA off, shadows medium, im only at the start and beat the griffin, seems ok so far. My 970 is at 1500mhz core 3900mhz memory.

Seems to drop to around 53-55 fps sometimes though. And of course for short times to 30 when the camera pans very close to Geralts hair in cutscenes.

Oh I don't run with Hairworks. I'd rather have a 60 smooth game. Some dips here and there in Novigrad but only for half a second.

I am getting really, really tired of these nvidia driver crashes.

353.12 (Clean Install after using DDU)

Can range from within 2 minutes to 2 hours but I am almost guarenteed to get a driver crash.

Only happens with The Witcher 3 (that I've noticed), seems to be a lot more frequent since 1.06 dropped.

Go back to the GTA driver. I've been using it for 2 weeks now without crashing even once. No performance drops either.

I turned RTSS off a week or so ago and in the past 15-20 hours of play I've only had two driver crashes - both after very long sessions. Not perfect, but beforehand I was maybe getting 40-60 minutes before a crash and having to constantly save for fear of losing several minutes or more of progress.

If you're using an overlay or some other injection tool I'd try playing without.
