That was kinda the point, Cloud does kinda suck, but he eventually overcomes all that in FFVII. Zack is pretty badass, Crisis Core just confirms that.

Zack is my favorite character but they won't way too far

Well, he's a Shinra grunt. They are pretty lame and, like, the Stormtrooper of FF7.

I do agree that the game play the "Awesome Zack" narrative a bit much, perhaps in part to segue cleanly into the whole "living legacy" thing, which I dislike.

I think it might be the comparison to Zack that bothers me honestly. They tipped the scales too much where Cloud can't even seem to do basic shit right (except for the Nibelheim thing, but then that was already in VII) and Zack is a superhuman badass from Planet Awesome

Whoa, you just blew my mind with Anakin.
Anagram for Nanaki, Red XIII's real name.

Haha, never thought about this.
If so, is
RED XIII
a reference to
Red Squadron
?
I just checked, Luke is 'Red V', but funny coincidence: Red Squardon has twelve Members... interestingly close to XIII
(not sure if 'spoiler-worthy' or not)

Cloud also really wanted to be like Sephiroth, who he idolized as a young lad.
I always found this pretty tragic. He idolized Sephiroth as a young lad, wanted to get away from his home town and chase a dream where he could emulate this famous guy and then return to his home town as a 1st class SOLDIER and impress everyone including Tifa. Instead he remained basically what he thought was a "nobody" by becoming just a Shinra grunt, and wanted to hide his shame from everyone when he returned.

Then the very same guy he idolized goes crazy, becomes convinced he is a superior being and without a care in the world slaughtered everyone in the village like insects including Cloud's mother just because he saw them as weak and standing in his path, razing everything and everyone Cloud took for granted growing up (except Tifa who survived in the end) to the ground.

It always made me happy that it was Cloud, not because he was the main character but because he was revealed as one of the "little people", who was the one that somehow summoned the strength to kick Sephiroth's ass in that moment and damage his ego.

Very well stated.

Let's hope they don't miss that aspect of the story.

There's a triumph in how he destroyed Sephiroth with his own inner strength at the reactor.

The remake should have the Ni no Kuni combat.(͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.

Me too, especially with the way that it's told. He's introduced as a very capable somebody, and kind of falls into that role, but then you learn that he wasn't who he said or thought he was at all. But by that point, he's become close enough to who he originally said he was anyway. Really interesting piece of the story.

Oh, and

Then the very same guy he idolized goes crazy, becomes convinced he is a superior being and without a care in the world slaughtered everyone in the village like insects including Cloud's mother just because he saw them as weak and standing in his path, razing everything and everyone Cloud took for granted growing up (except Tifa who survived in the end) to the ground.

Zangan lived through Nibelheim, as well. Having some Shenmue-esque training mini-games with him and Tifa would be amaaaaazing. Probably won't happen, though.

Did Cid have a cigarette in the original game? I know in some art works he did, thought he did too in game.
Hell yeah he did! He uses it to light a stick of dynamite in one of his Limit Breaks like he is large and in charge. I don't even like VII in comparison to other games in the series, but my motto in this game has always been All Cid All the Time.

Something I quite enjoyed about Crisis Core was how it introduced a lot of subtle changes to previously knowm events
not including Zack's death lol

The scene where Sepiroth is walking away in the flames for example. Whereas in the original game he looks malicious as fuck, in Crisis Core he looks anguished. Almost regretful even. Given that Sepiroth was supposedly a hero before (and in Crisis Core you can see plenty of examples as to how he truly was a good guy) this really made sense and served to make his downfall all the more tragic.

I think it could be cool if there were ways to find out more about Sepiroth's past in the remake. Though I think it should be something you have to hunt for instead of something that is forcefully injected into the original story.

Cloud is basically the most important nobody. I always like that aspect of the story.

I really hope so. He's a character that should be fleshed out more.

Ack! My 4th Enemy Skill materia is locked outta getting Trine just because I did the Wutai stuff early on and nooooo other enemy in the game that can use it is available anymore. Fix this crap in the remake Square! >_<

What I thought was cool how when you return to Clouds hometown it's there like it wasn't burned down. And when you try to talk to the locals they act like you're crazy.

When in reality
it was Shinra who rebuilt it to cover up what happened and all the locals are hired by Shinra

the only real good thing in CC is some of Zacks development, and his interactions with cloud, in my opinion, and even then it has a great deal of stuff that should be struck down from FF7 entirely, especially how he meets aerith, then theres all the interactions she has with him, its like they made it seem like she cant decide anything without Zack telling her, or deciding for her, its so stupid

it's offensive what they did to her in that game.

So are we doing spoilers in here? I'll just tag it for now, but I have a question.

How long were Cloud and Zack experimented on in Nibelheim? Crisis Core makes it seem like they were experimented on for several years. I always thought from FFVII that it was just some short period of time, but I suppose they don't put an exact time frame. Crisis Core makes it seem like FFVII begin shortly after Zack dies.

I kinda liked the original idea that he lives a false persona for several years as a hired mercenary. But I suppose him being a lowly experiment would make sense why he is so low level at the beginning of FFVII.

It's best to pretend CC is fan fiction. Maybe VIIR will use it to flesh out zack some more but hopefully won't ride his giant throbbing gilded buster sword like CC does. Dude is not supposed to be a Jesus figure.

idk if they thought it that far as far as level goes at the start of VII. But
him being a lowley experiment might be true.
My memory about everything isn't so clear.

As a kid I didn't get the scene when you reach Hojo and
he had Aerith and Red XIII together trying to get them to mate.
Even with Tifa pointing it out you didn't quite get it but knew it was something bad lol.

That dude is so twisted it's not even funny.

If I recall correctly, they were in there for 4 years. Cloud was about 17 in Crisis Core as well and he's 21 in the original game so that would line up.

He wasn't. The story was about his development and journey. He had flaws. He messed up sometimes too. In the end the only person he really managed to save was Cloud
but he wasn't able to save himself
.

He took out multiple Shinra Helicopters, tanks, and legions of soldiers before finally being stopped by getting shot point blank in a non-specified part of his upper body. He then takes his time delivering a slow-paced death speech to Cloud instead of telling him to run away, then dramatically dies in the most lethargic way possible.

He's totally a Jesus figure.

He was slowly dying throughout the entire battle. Eventually he's barely even able to swing his sword. Weirdly, I'm pretty sure there was a flashback in which Zack told Cloud to run. However it would seem that's been retconned to Zack carrying him to a safe place. Regardless though, Cloud wouldn't have been able to run anyway. Plus everyone was dead. What is Cloud running from?

Lastly, I highly doubt Zack was happy with his own death. He was just happy he could save Cloud. Though I will agree that being lifted into the heavens was kind of dumb...

Without taking Crisis Core at all into equation:

Even in the original game, it is implied that they've been experimented on for years and never actually spent any time as a mercenary. Remember that when Tifa and Barret found Cloud on the Sector 7 train station, he's still the same blubbering mess who took Zack's sword. The First Bombing Mission happens right after.

I suppose my concern with UE4 is that it won't give FFVII all the bells and whistles that Luminous has given XV.

The massive seamless map, global illumination lighting, day/night cycles, weather systems, ridiculous character animations/physics and massive scale (summons, monsters) all at once.

I don't see why UE4 can't do most of these thing's, the engine gets updated regularily, it's no longer the same thing upon release of ue4 (it has more stuff), even then it could do most/practically all of the thing's you mention especially the day/night and weather.

I would be surprised if at this point it can't do all what you just wrote (i'm not sure about the seamless map's though but with the recent releases i don't think that should be an issue due to them wanting the engine to be more open world capable thus making lot's of improvements and additions). It's an advanced and extensive engine constantly being updated.

Cloud seemed like a cool cucumber at the beginning of FFVII. He was all Too Cool for School, or Avalanche I guess.

Yeah, but there's a segment of time before FFVII begins where he and the Jenova cells inside of him are still piecing together his memory and personality. Barret and Tifa meet him while this is still happening. Or at least at the tail end of it.

It's been a long time since I played FFVII. Did the game make this connection of events? I remember Cloud piecing together his memories late in the game.

I'm talking about the scene where
Barret and Tifa found Cloud sitting and moaning incomprehensible words on the train station. They thought that he's not well in the head and Tifa took pity on him before she realized the he's Cloud. When Tifa uttered his name, Cloud likewise suddenly recognized Tifa and in a flash turned into Cool Cucumber Cloud.

It's one of the scenes clarified when Tifa and Cloud were trapped in Lifestream under Mideel. The game never actually tells how far apart that scene was from the event of Zack's death (for all we know, Cloud could be like that for years), but makes it clear that it happened right before they hired him to help on the Bombing Mission.

A little off-topic...

But Yoichi Wada finally became President Shinra...

Let's hope for his sake that he won't share the same fate as the one from FF VII. xD

The whole Nibelheim crisis was 5 years ago, so it has to be nearly 5 years.

Since it's a remake are they going to put Lightning in it? I kinda hope they do.

please tell me this is ban worthy.

hell yeah, best Cid in the franchise.

I always thought the bombing mission didn't happen right after Crisis Core, since Cloud has a normal SOLDIER uniform at the end of Crisis Core whereas in FFVII one of his pauldrons is missing and the other has been modified with screws.

Crisis Core was crap, nothing more than glorified fan-fiction. The less influence the creators of Remake take from that game, the better. I hope they ignore it completely.

I also hope it is ignored. There wasn't much things they could have done for Zack's backstory so they padded it with a TON of shit. Looking at you Angeal, Genesis, Director, Turk girl, etc. Hated the "I'm your legacy" crap. Zack, you're just a jobber for Sephiroth. It also overglorified the Buster Sword, it was suppose to be a joke, a giant kitchen knife.

yeah i hope they dont cut out all the different weapons for a crappy upgrade system for the buster sword because "its a important sword" for cloud (well in crappy fanfics anyway)

To be fair, I don't remember much of the story in Crisis Core, if anything. It have been years since I played it.

So I guess I should play Final Fantasy VII before Crisis Core.

I'll look into it, after I have completed Final Fantasy VI on my Android phone, and A Realm Reborn.

I didn't like CC's Story, but it was nice to see the old familiar FFVII Locations in a full 3D enviroment. Sure, it was just PSP graphics, but they did those places justice, they had the look, they had the feel, so at least in that regard, I'm not too worried about the Remake.

I don't mind about the compilation and I don't harbor ill feelings towards it, but the whole "Cloud carrying Zack's legacy" is an absolute travesty to the original ffVII's intent and message. It is an affront to its "heart" even, if you will.

Because the idea behind the entire Cloud's plot is about how he adopted another guy's dreams and identity (Zack's) in order to become "somebody" and learning in the end, that this was a grave mistake, as he didn't needed to become another person in order to be "somebody", but rather being himself it was more than enough to make a difference.

Good idea, I think they actually will re-emphasize the fact that he was a good person in his past. No one becomes evil for lack of a reason. And I feel that one of the themes of FFVII is how the corrupt things in life eventually corrupt people. When Sepiroth finds out the truth about himself and his mother, he is corrupted by the evil of the world. Shinra and Midgar exemplify the effect that a corrupt way of life has on the world.

I love that the game opens in Midgar and you spend enough time in Midgar to start thinking that this must be how the whole world is. But when we finally leave Midgar we realize how different things can really be. The world is beautiful, and we learn to love it. We learn to value things like friendship and love, and forget our selfish ways.

I still think that FF7 had the greatest ad campaign ever. It seemed like the first time a game was really presented as being an event that made you feel like you had to be part of it. The commercials did a really good job of that

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDz9A4ByHIQ

I find it hilarious that US commercials have to show CGI cut-scenes(with humongous spoilers to boot)plus loud voice announcer, but the Japanese TV Spot is only of working in game footage and of development work.

I doubt that was the only Japanese commercial.

some info from interview with Nomura on this week's magazine.

-the scenes from the announcement trailer is part of scenes used in the actual game. the quality will be improved
-PS4 will be the first hardware that you can play this game. We are not thinking beyond that.
-There will be no new characters. The visual will match the realistic feel of the trailer.
-can't talk about the game system much, but it will be more realistic system.

Oh shit, so we're actually getting different scenes in the game.
And if those are in the game then that means we should expect to see Midgar like that.
