New PS4 model (CUH-1200) announced

Dunno, full matte plastic and mechanical buttons makes it seem cheaper to me. I guess this is somewhat like the move from the original PS3 Fat to the PS3 Slim -- except it didn't get any thinner, only lighter. I quite like the capacitive buttons and glossy plate on the current PS4.

Agreed. Hopefully they don't go further and pull a "super slim" with the ps4. That thing is just too cheap. I will say though that, while I like them better, the capacitive buttons didn't always work well for me on the ps4. They're too skinny or recessed or somthing. So maybe mechanical would be better suited for the design.

Man.... this system can't come soon enough

Just started FF14 for the first time and holy fucking shit does it make the system scream :(

I'll probably sell my current models for this. Can't stand the glossy fingerprint/dust magnet on my current PS4s. It is absolutely pointless.

I actually like capacitive touch buttons but I have never had a problem with mine. Improved power, heat and noise are always a good thing.

I don't think there will be much savings in shipping, at least in bulk freight. Individual retailer to consumer could be a little if package weights fall into another bracket.

That little black box inside looks like a mini PS4. Cute

Not really, this is more the like rollout of the 40GB PS3 which dropped backwards compatibility. It also went from four USB slots to two, removed the card reader, and got rid of the chrome around the disk slot.

I really want to know what the noise level is. My ps4 has its fits of roaring rage and gets quite loud. I have this thread locked down just waiting for heat/noise tests (other than TR).

That is really shitty. And a lot of people must have noise issues, I see it all the time. My PS4 has never had them. I've owned two, and both have been very quiet. Even with GTA V or Last of Us, or any game that is intense (and I've been playing for hours at a time). I remember when reading that thread on all the people with noise issues, I was curious to see if I just wasn't noticing it on mine. So I made sure to shut off all fans/air conditioning. I've also sat close to my unit to listen closely.

I wonder why PS4 noise levels are so varied. I mean, I get various factors (such as external noise blocking it out, how far someone sits back from their device, where the device is situated, individuals hearing levels). But it seems weird how varied it is (and the extremes of how loud they can get it). Like, I remember the old PS3 models roaring like a jet engine over time. Same thing with the 360. But so far my X1 and my PS4 has never had any loud noise issues. But I really empathize with those that do, because I've seen a lot of people say they've had these issues.

I thought we were past these problems after leaving last gen. =/

I guess I don't get it. WHY would I update my ps4 for a matte finish hdd cover plate? This seems like a money grab to me.

I didn't know former ps4s would self destruct when this thing releases.

Doesn't seem the problem to me, because that's replaceable part. I'm pretty sure, we'll able to replace cover plate later with glossy one.

The only thing better about it for me is it can take 2.5" hdds. And less energy consumtion is good for enviornmental reasons.

I envy you. The Playstation golds really help :/

I really really think it's thermal paste application. Mine wasn't too loud, but I changed the thermal paste anyway and it got quieter.

The factory application didn't look like it was applied properly anyway. And with everything else in the system being standardized, that is one thing that can vary from console to console, so it just makes sense.

Yeah, i just upgraded to the batman console and yeah, a lot quieter. Night and day with my last one. So happy i changed it.

I completely forgot about HDMI 2.0. Yes. That is a must. I'm ok with the physical size. I just want a quieter system, with 5GHz WiFi, and HDMI 2.0. Everything else I requested has been addressed.
What's the point of HDMI 2.0 if it doesn't come with support for Ultra HD BluRay? You should add that to your list. I suppose support for 4k Netflix, etc is valuable too, but consoles kind of seem like overkill for that.

you actually want HDMI 2.0a BTW

Thanks for bringing that up. That actually could make sense. Would also be a weird variable that could cause one PS4 to have noise as opposed to another.

i actually like the capacitive buttons and a 8% power saving doesnt seem like much... im hoping to just swap out the faceplate for a matte one

I'm in for one of the newer systems, especially if there's a decent bundle for Black Friday from Amazon. Is MGSV is pretty much the only new bundle we know of for later in the year? If not then, then the inevitable UC4 bundle early next year.

I don't know what gremlins are in my launch unit but it's a guarantee if I put the system in rest mode, that it will start spitting out discs with the eject motor stuck in a loop, accompanied by that be-be-beep noise that won't stop until I power down and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet.

Huh? Who said this is targeted at existing owners?

It exists by virtue of being cheaper to sell for Sony.

Yeah. It's strange that many people are considering this a worthwhile upgrade. We have no evidence that fan noise is reduced and you're buying the same sized black box.

Wait for the slim if you already have a PS4.

Only choice for US buyers was the Destiny bundle then ? Weird choice from Sony.

Edit : Not that I'd recommend the white console to anyone though. Mine is just horribly loud. I can't wait to swap it for the newer model.

Haha, you mean this? http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=743929
I remember reading about this too, never heard about it after this one though. Still very funny incident, who knows what caused that.

Wasn't there someone in a factory that sabotaged ps4s (by messing with thermal paste) during launch - apparently he was a xbox fanboy.

Anyway alot of folks have changed thermal paste and no dice. I'm assuming they did it correctly but need to get this myself.

Screw this. I'm putting my PS4 up for auction. I barely play it and when I do I'm pissed off by the sound of the fan. I'll grab a new one when price is lowered and / or slim is introduced.

The loudness has nothing to do with the colour, not sure if that's what you meant to imply but it reads like that.

I wouldn't expect this unit to be much quieter, and I have no issue with my current model anyway.

I wasn't implying anything, I'm sure it's a case to case scenario just like the black model.

I got a Batman grey PS4 for my girlfriend and the thing is whisper quiet (I'm aware it's not a 1200), so I prefer to go for a newer model instead of switching for an old one and hope for the best.

Some people are also more sensitive, may have warmer rooms, have more dust in the rooms, etc.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Definitely sounds like cheaper components so if people want the best model it is better to get the original.

Cheaper components does necessarily not mean bad components.

It's likely, for instance, that they reduced the number of RAM chips by half simply by using newer chips with double the density. That would also partly explain the reduced power consumption.

My friend brought over his PS4 last holiday when he came to visit, so I have experienced his system and mine in the same room under the same conditions playing the same game. The noise difference between the two was absolutely astounding. Mine is incredibly loud from across the room while his could barely be heard with my head right next to the system listening intently for noise. The systems had been on for roughly the same amount of time while playing multiplayer together. The difference isn't a perception issue at all, there is simply a dramatic noise difference from system to system.

If this new model turns out to be consistently quieter I am going to take mine into GameStop and exchange it once the new models are in abundance. Luckily I swapped my old system out for a new one during that insane trade in deal earlier this year, so I still have nearly two years of replacement coverage left.
