PS1 game N2O gets emulated release on Steam, more coming.

N2O released today, from a company called Console Classics:

They have a whole bunch of other games listed on their website. Toshinden 2, D, Loaded, ReLoaded, Ten Pin Alley, lots of budget stuff from XS Games.

So not exactly an amazing lineup, probably a couple games in there you remember playing at some point at least. It's more interesting that it's a thing that is happening at all, and maybe could lead to people with the rights to non-bargain bin stuff to try the same thing.

Now if only we could get the 3DO release of Return Fire on Steam that would make me happy. I don't know who owns the rights to that series though.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
What type of emulator is it using ePSXe or some custom one a la the Official Sony?

Cool beans, does it support high resolution rendering?

Might check out N2O, apparently it runs at 60 fps on the original Playstation. Impressive accomplishment!

This is great, I remember playing N2O specifically for the crystal method soundtrack back in the day. Now bring on Loaded/Reloaded, loved those games!

Whoa, Nitrous Oxide. There's a blast from the past. And D! Maybe I'll actually play that game now.

Whatever helps preserve games and allows us to buy them legally. Bring it on.

Agreed!

A bit embarrassing for Sony that not all of these are on the PSN store (at least I don't see N2O).

Edit: I was wrong, it's under Nitrous Oxide, not N2O.

D and Toshinden 2 don't appear to be though.

Yea, bought this today when I saw it randomly sitting in the new releases bin and was wondering if this saw a PC release.

Wonder if they are paying a license to Sony or did they develop an emulator that works without bios? I'm unaware of a psx emulator that doesn't require bios to work well.

Not interested in the current selection of games on offer here but I would like to see more of this kind of thing happening. Other systems games would be nice also. More options to buy classics are always welcome.

I remember renting N2O and beating it, all while my brother made fun of the soundtrack.

And the soundtrack is intact.

I gotta get this.

Am I blind or is there no real company information on their official website?
And their Twitter feed is set to Kotaku...

So are these people like Night Dive and they've managed to figure out the rights or acquire them somehow?

Are there many other notable PSX era games that have had their parent companies go bust and nobody relevant owns the rights anymore?

Never played Koudelka, but I believe it's kind of a precursor to the Shadow Hearts series, which is one of my favorite RPG series ever. Might check it out.

I agree with this.

Is this an actual, legal port? I'd think a lot of the games we'd want on psn aren't there due to the maze like nature of old IP rights. Half the publishers from that era no longer exist, with who knows who owning the rights these days.

Crap...Sacnoth(Nautilus) they're pretty dead from what I gather and if not the creators or any private individuals got the rights to it it's probably not legal?

I miss Shadow Hearts :(

This is completely illegal. There is no way they got the rights for these games.

Edit: I may be wrong on N2O at least still not sure about the other games.

This seems like a cool move. Were the SEGA classic releases emulated versions as well (Sonic, Streets of Rage etc), or is this technically a first?

But yea, If you want to kill piracy by offering a convenient legal method, and help the preservation of games at the same time, find whatever way you can of making games available for purchase.

Cool that they added Steam achievements and have multiple controller profiles already set-up.

Why not? I mean we're not exactly talking about classics here. Some of that stuff is really fucking obscure for some scam site to be putting up when they probably would have much more lucrative options.

Kouldelka is SNK property if it was going to be released it would be through them.

Yeah the Genesis stuff on Steam is emulated. And there's tons of old DOS games that use DOSbox on Steam, if you want to count that.

And most SCUMM based games on steam (Putt Putt, Pajama Sam, etc), use out of box SCUMMVM. If you press F5 the logo shows up and everything. GOG is more active in using it as they have more SCUMMVM comparable games on their store.

This trend is awesome, I can only hope it grows. What a great way to make classic games accessible and preserved for a future audience.

Actually this is interesting urbanscan is owned by the original designer of N20 and they do own the rights to it. Interesting it seems like some of these may be legit.

How good is the N2O emulation? I mean in terms of resolution options and things like that.

Edit: Koudelka looks interesting. Remember reading a bit about it in a magazine back in the day. Any good?
