Witcher 3 PC Performance Thread

Seriously, is it the new Nvidia drivers or was there a patch to TW itself that is causing all these crashes?

Played for dozens of hours without a single crash, now getting one every half an hour.

Rolling back drivers help? Is it possible to rollback patches without rendering saves useless?

What gives?

I had the same problem as well. 40+ hours of no crashes and then sudden crashes. I noticed the game had switched back to border-less full screen. I changed back to full screen and the crashes stopped.

So is using RTSS (for framelimiting) the key to remove stuttering? I'm running a 290 and a i5 2500K @4.0ghz, do I just set RTSS to cap at 60, enable vsync in game and disable the framelimiter in game, and I'm good to go?

Random information:
When I started playing last week I constantly had the Game crashing my whole PC within
minutes of playing. Running the game not through GOG Galaxy fixed it for me.

AMD cards will tend to still stutter during FPS drops since generally they have poorer frame-time pacing with certain games.

There are many posts (and varying opinions) in this very thread. I played for over 100 hours via this method:

NVCP: half-refresh v-sync, max pre-rendered frames=1, prefer maximum performance
In-game: full screen, v-sync off, frame-rate unlimited, motion blur off
Thanks :) I searched the thread and someone else recommended using Rivatuner to limit it to 31 fps, then engaging 1/2 refresh v-sync in NVCP. :)

not even a 980ti will give you a solid 60 with all setting on ultra at 1440p, as soon as it starts raining the frame will drop to the 55s on cities and sometimes on dense forests to 48 or 50, i have my 980ti with the boost clock set to 1450 and have shadows and foliage range down to high, to be honest the difference on shadows is pretty much unnoticeable and on foliage you can see the difference on screenshots but is not so big that is worth to sacrifice better IQ for the difference gained

For reference, my SLi 980s are able to maintain a stable 70+ FPS at everything completely maxed out with HairWorks off. I think that's the approximate minimum amount of power you'll need to get those kinds of results.

On an (un)related note, I still keep getting CTD, now no longer just form the inventory menu. No idea why the game does this. Does anyone knows if/where the game saves crash logs?

Not much difference, I wonder what the performance difference is.

After 77 hours i just traveled to Skellige for the first time.

I did a quest and i'm trying to travel back to Novigrad for the first time. It's crashing t desktop every time i try.

Anyone else had this?

Apparently I'm not the only one with the crashes to desktop when travelling.

I have a game breaking bug. Already went back and forth from Skellige before but now I'm stuck in Skellige and have no way to come back. This at 60 hours of playing.
I tried going to Velen, to White Orchad and even to Vizima, no dice. Docks via boats are a no go as well. Checked integrity with gog galaxy, but I didn't try to turn off the DLCs yet (it takes a long time for each one... jeez).
Another thing I noticed is that it crashes to desktop even if I load a game while there's a game save already loaded, or when the game tries to autoload a savefile after a game over. Crash to desktop every frigging time.
I tried to load an old savefile, before the last time I went to Skellige and did a lot of quests and even finished the main quests. I can travel TO Skellige just fine with that savefile, but when I try to LEAVE it, crash to desktop.

What gives? Am I fucked? 60 hours of progress, jesus.

I restarted several times, then traveled around skelleig then tried all the signports in Novigrad, I eventually managed to get back, but it crashed 4 times trying.

Can't wait to push my GTX 980 Ti at 1440p. Looks like it can maintain 50+ which doesn't bother me since I got G-sync. Although those screenshots don't show much of a difference between high and ultra for shadows and foliage.

Had this issue as well. I just happened to have a save before hitting that area and just took the few hour loss.

Heard some talk about it being DLC related?

Anyone else on Win 10 preview playing this on the Nvidia drivers? For some reason I keep getting nvidia driver crashes, or the game just randomly freezing up. Sometimes takes an hour of playtime to happen, other times I can play without any issue for 3+ hours. It's really annoying.

Been messing with in game settings but I can't get a 30fps lock with hair works on 1080p. I have a gtx970 and 2500k at 4.5ghz, 8gb ram.

I get that on Windows 7 - I had to underclock my gpu to remove the issue.

Tried many times from different posts to different posts but it didn't help, now I'll try to do a few more quests in Skellige and try to go back from time to time.

Yeah, that's what I'll try next, I'm going to disable the latest DLCs because I have a feeling that's when the bug started to appear (that or the new nvidia drivers for batman). I tried previous saves and I can fast travel to Skellige but then I can't come back to Velen or other areas, so the bug is still there even in those saves.

I'm on the pre-Batman drivers (the Heroes of the storm drivers) and i had this issue so my hunch is it;'s the latest DLC. I installed it last night just before my play session.

I had the same issue. I reloaded a save from a little earlier, fast travelled to Velen or Novigrad without a crash, saved the game and then reloaded the newer save, and it fixed the fast travel crash.

Has there been any game updates this month? It seems like the fixes stopped after 1.05. Weren't there a lot of open issues that they had planned to fix?

There is a 1.07 patch being worked on. It's supposedly very big. They also will likely be more patches following that. They won't just stop and move on anytime soon.

Yep, I can confirm it's the latest DLC, the one with the new quest on Skellige. Problem is, you can't load a game saved with that DLC on if you turn it off. The last save I have with the DLC off is dating two weeks ago, the day before that DLC came out. So yeah, I don't plan on replaying 20 hours or so of progress. I'll put the game on ice till the next patch, provided it will fix this issue.

Tried this with no luck. I have to load a two weeks old save for the fast travel to work (and it works only if the DLC is disabled anyway). When I load the current save (but I have to re-enable the DLC to do that), the game goes back to crashing to desktop when fast travelling.

Yep - Ultra Foliage distance is a great improvement if you have the horsepower to do it. I can mostly stay above 60 with it on, but my consistency in frametimes takes a noticeable hit - so I just dropped it down to High - now I'm above 60 90% of the time (e.g. into the 70s and 80s), only saw dips into the 40s when I enabled Hairworks on monsters - running into a huge pack of white wolves on Skellige, but I can deal with that.

Ugh, that is such a pain.

I only installed it last night but i did loads.

What happens if you uninstall the DLC and load a save where it was present?

How do you even go about uninstalling DLC on steam?

On Steam, I have no idea. I doubt you can even do it. Sigh.
You can do it on GOG but anyway it doesn't change anything since you won't be able to load a savegame where the DLC was present after unistalling it.
Anyway, they acknowledged the issue on the official forums and said they're working on it. Waiting for that 1.07, I'll just do more optional Skellige stuff in the meantime, hoping it will be fixed shortly, if ever.

EDIT: apparently they just updated the answer. They explain how to disable the DLCs, however it won't do much good unless you want to lose last night progress (I would lose 2 weeks of progress since I installed it as soon as it came out, lucky me).

I like foliage distance on Ultra. I choose that sometimes but its the difference between really consistent and only kinda consistent performance. Looks really good though as the cutoff in foliage can be quite noticeable in enough situations on High.

The foliage is for the most part perfect on Ultra. There was this one spot in Velen though that literally drew a field of wheat before my eyes just a few feet from the horse as I rode, and would remove the wheat as I rode back. Only case I've seen so far.

I installed that new Triss costume, saved a game right in front of her, uninstalled, loaded the save and she was back in her old costume. No errors, no crashes.

GOG version.

edit: I guess you're just talking about that one quest. I didn't try turning that off.

I can confirm that I've seen two fast travel crashes since installing that quest. Total crash count since launch: 2

Anyone on the latest Win 10 preview and NOT getting constant driver crashes with an Nvidia card? Which version drivers are you on?

I've uninstalled the latest DLC just incase. Luckily I hadn't loaded the game and created a new save since installing it, so I should be OK.

I decided to upgrade from a 660 to a 970 because I was not enjoying playing at a locked 30 FPS, and boy oh boy is this game beautiful. I'm playing with all post processing on, and everything on medium except for textures, which I have on high, and I'm locked at 60 at all times. Is there anything else I could afford to turn up without starting to see drops?

I have a mixture of high and ultra settings, and haven't seen any drops below 60 (using sweetfx and its FPS counter) after 47 hours. It's worth checking out the nvidia tweak guide, and then pushing up some of your settings. It's a stunning game, and runs really nicely on the 970.

My settings for reference:-

Ambient Occlusion: HBAO+
AA: On
Bloom: On
DOF: On
Detail Level: HIgh
Display Mode: Full screen
Foliage Visibility Range: High
Grass Density: High
Light Shafts: On
Background Characters: Ultra
Hairworks: Off
Resolution: 1920x1080
Shadow Quality: High
Terrain Quality: Ultra
Texture Quality: Ultra
Water Quality: Ultra

I get a perfect locked 30FPS at 1080p with everything maxed out including hairworks with a 2600k, 8GB RAM and a GTX 970. Maybe it's the CPU that makes all the difference there.

Hairworks makes his Geralt's hair look worse when I've tried it, yet other hair look fine. I do notice some invisible wind blowing his hair in many indoor cutscenes using the stock hair :p

Haven't experienced any issues with the DLC.
