Starbucks raising prices... again

Just like last year around this time, another round of price increases.

Prices are going up 5 to 20 cents on many beverages (more in some markets, like here in San Fran), despite their profits up 18% this year.

Your morning coffee may be getting a little more expensive.
Starting Tuesday, Starbucks (SBUX) will charge 5 to 20 cents more for some of its drinks -- mostly hot beverages -- at the majority of its U.S. stores.
The company did not specify exactly which drinks will be impacted because it charges different prices in different regions of the country.
Starbucks has increased prices on different products for at least the past three years, but Starbucks spokesperson Lisa Passe said this is the first increase in two years "for the majority of impacted beverages, such as Tall brewed coffee and Grande Latte."
On average a Starbucks receipt will be about 1% more expensive, she added. Food, packaged coffee, or and some drinks such as a Frappuccinos and Grande-sized brewed coffees will not be affected. But Tall and Venti brewed coffee will go up by 10 cents in most markets.

I just got back from Starbucks which is why I noticed. The grande brewed coffee went from 2.10 to 2.25 at my nearest store.

What a perfect opportunity to try supporting your local coffee shops, many of which are both cheaper AND have better coffee! :)

I saw this news last night. I don't buy coffee there often, doesn't make sense to spend that much money on a single cup of coffee. I'm wondering at what point people figure out that it's wasteful to spend as much on a single cup of coffee as they could on buying almost an entire bag of coffee. Then again, people are still buying bottled water so I guess they'll keep buying overpriced coffee.

This too.

If only my local coffeeshops had decent wifi. Ugh. Thankfully I don't actually drink Starbucks coffee, I just use their wifi. I don't think the manager likes me.

Not necessarily cheaper. Maybe on some drinks, but on most of the good stores near me they only have one cup size (similar to the Starbucks "tall") yet cost more than a Starbucks grande. But better? Yes.

There's still reasons to frequent Starbucks though, such as their rewards program. If you are a frequent coffee drinker it can be worth it over other stores.

Plus Starbucks is everywhere, which makes it an easy choice.

This too.

What kind of coffee are you buying that you can get a whole bag for $2.25?

I only drink in Starbuks because of the golden membership that gives me free shots and stuff (so I can order a hot chocolate and some ridiculous 5 shots of espresso and only pay for the hot chocolate). But I'm ready to drop that if they keep increasing the prices (assuming this is not just the USA).

I can do just fine with 3 shots anyway.

What country are you in? I don't think that is a Gold member perk for USA members.

I have NEVER heard of this.

Okay. In the USA being Gold gets you:

* 1 free drink every 12 stars. 1 star earned per beverage, but you can get bonus stars through promotions (like buy a certain drink at a certain time of day to get 4 bonus stars)

and... that's it. you used to get free syrups and stuff but they removed it. free shots would be great.

Free refills still in effect, I believe.

Yes but I think that is for green card too isn't it? And the refills are on brewed or iced coffee and tea, not the other drinks. Which I don't fault them on at all, that is still more than fair and curbs abuse a lot. Just don't walk up there expecting a mocha refill.

Can't get that S'mores frappucino anywhere else so take my money

Plus inflation exists and Starbucks does some cool stuff for employees

Sorry, I'm not going to get up in arms about a foodservice outlet raising prices when they treat their employees far better than the industry norm and said price raise will help them continue to do just that.

In the UK everyone gets a free drink after 15 drinks. When you get to gold (which I did by buying £1 caramel waffles) you get free extras (as in shots and syrups or else). I wouldn't buy Starbucks if it weren't for that.

But one thing I must admit, every time I had some problem with my membership or every time I complained about something they always give me free vouchers to order anything. The costumer service is quite nice.

I still don't understand why so many people would want to just buy regular coffee there. Obviously they like it, but as others have said local places usually have better coffee and are cheaper.

The only thing I use Starbucks for is the occasional Caramel Frappuccino, Pumpkin Spiced Latte, and Caramel Brule Latte.

If their coffee, menu, and service is better than the competition, they are more than free to raise their prices, as they see fit.

If you are displeased, vote with your wallet, or make your own coffee.

There are great capsule coffee machines, from which you can make incredible chinos and more with.

Kinda funny how quality has gone down for their coffee as prices have gone up. I guess that's a virtual monopoly for ya though. Man, I wish my area still had a Caribou or something. Not that it matters too much because I just buy a bag or seasonal coffee there once in a blue moon.

Ahh, OK. Yeah, don't think you need gold. But I only get the brewed drinks, so I'm cool with this perk!

How many people go to Starbucks and spend $2.25 on a cup of coffee, vs how many go and get a large caramel frappucino for $4-5 every day? And let's not act like $2.25 for a single serving of coffee is cheap, either.

Also, when I said "single cup of coffee" I wasn't only speaking about coffee. Was speaking of the coffee flavored drinks that they have that cost twice as much or more as their plain coffee.

This would be a big deal if you couldn't make almost everything they make at home for less than half the cost.
You could even write your fake name on your mug if you want to.

I usually go there when I know I'm going to drink at least two cups of coffee, so usually when me and my wife go out shopping, since I can get a free refill most of the time. Stand alone stores seem to really stick to the same visit only refill, but malls and Target don't care. And if you have a cup in the car from a previous visit or a plastic cup, usually cam get that refilled for free.

Another reason I drink there is I know what I'm getting wherever I am. When traveling you can find some bad coffee shops, but I know I will get a cup of Starbucks at Starbucks.
