PS4 HDD speed test thread (HDD/SSHD/SSD/STD)

Yes, an SSHD will be faster if you play 1-3 games at a time as opposed to going back and forth between 5-7 games as a rule of thumb.

I usually play a game then move on or play MP of another game so I went with an SSHD.

A 7200rpm HD will offer consistent speeds where a SSHD will be faster and slower at times depending on usage.

I'll get a SSD when 1TB hits 150 or less, if Cerny had went with SATA III I would have bought a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO/Pro day one. The SSDs are again limited by the interface this gen which sucks.
Oh lawd, I almost exclusively only play Driveclub, so it's a no-brainer. I have an ooold Seagate Momentus XT 750GB, I should upgrade (from stock).

I just bought the Samsung Seagate SpinPoint 2TB myself. Is there any steps I should take before just plopping this in. Any format I need to make it? Firmware need to be dropped on the drive first?

No formatting is needed.
Firmware needs to be downloaded but not the one which are used for normal update. It is a larger firmware file which is needed.

You need to click the Download Now >> link under the usb storage - ps4 - update icon to download the correct firmware file in the Perform a New Installation part.

You can find instructions on youtube like this one

None of that whatsoever. Just make sure you have the full firmware on a usb stick and not just the update (it should be around 750 megs, not the 250 megs one).

Eight hours to back up my system to an old USB 2.0 drive. Wish I could use my USB 3.0 drive, but it's full. It's going to be a long day.

My PS4's currently backing up and I'm replacing the stock drive with a 750GB 7200rpm HDD.

How much difference will I see with that?

When you do a backup, does it backup all the account settings etc.? Like if you have an account with a password protected code, does all that transfer as well?

It would be nice if you could just get the hdd out of the enclosure and swap the other drive in. Does the enclosure not allow that?

Back-up and restore is done and I'm getting severe lag in the PS4 OS.

Rebuilt the database and it's still horrible. Any way to fix this?

Can I take out the new drive and just put the original stock drive back in without having to reinstall everything?

Can't deal with this sluggishness.

Put back in the previous HDD and everything's working normally, it's as though nothing changed :)
Ah, that's interesting!
I thought the PS4 changed its encryption key whenever it formated a new disk (like, I believe, the PS3 did).
Good to know you can use the previous HDD in case you need.

Nah, the PS3 and PS4 both tie the HDD key to the console itself, which is why this works. And it's probably actually a truly random number, this time, too!

I stand corrected, then.
I've probably mixed up with people having bad luck trying to move their HDD from a console to another one.

So, I've upgraded my HDD after spending ages backing the old one up. I thought it would take a while according to one of the tutorials I found, but I guess using a USB 3.0 HDD to backup to helped.

I'll be testing the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB (the SSHD that only comes with 4GB SSD-ness) to test. Thing came out five years ago apparently, so we'll see how she goes. It's a 7200rpm SSHD (compared to the newer ones which are only 5400) but it's only 3Gb/s so I can only hope it's as good as current SSHD drives.

i believe my seagate 2tb is starting to fail and is not even 6 months old, everything is super slow now and sometimes the games just freeze for about 10 seconds, sucks

Just upgraded my drive to the Seagate ST1000LM014. Some note about backup and restore for those who may be interested:

I had 310GB data to back up in total (cleared a couple of games off I'd finished with to make the backup a bit smaller). The process doesn't back up any non-SEN linked accounts. For example, I had a second profile called 'offline' that I switch to for some games or when friends come round and I don't want their games or saves on my profile. This wasn't backed up so all associated data etc. was lost. Not that I care about it to be honest, but just thought it's useful to know. I was backing up to a USB powered 1TB USB 3.0 drive.

Backup started at 11:45 and finished at 14:00 totalling 2 hrs 15mins
Restore started at 14:30 and finished at 16:45 totalling 2hrs 15mins

Total time for whole process 4hrs 30 mins. PS4 rebooting now and loading.

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on this before my Witcher pre-order starts downloading? What are your those on this Send? Are you happy with it?

Yeah it's not long been in so the caching will still be a bit 'busy' at this point. However, prior to this I had the Seagate ST500LM000 which I was very happy with and effectively the same tech. The 1TB just has dual platters otherwise seeks would be a PITA at that density.

So, is this SSHD still the best one to get for the PS4?

it's bigger than stock and should be an overall decrease in loading times, right? I hit max capacity when installing the Witcher and now is a good time as ever, i suppose.

How much of a hassle is the software side of the swap? If i just backup settings and saves, the backup shouldn't take too long, right?

I'd just get the drive tomorrow, install it and re-download the Witcher while chilling at the pool at my parents' house.

I only backed up saves on my upgrade, but you can only restore them when game data has been installed so that can be a hassle. Also, as far as I know you have to manually select every game. That's annoying.

Recently did the upgrade to a 2tb seagate drive:

-spent 6 hours backing up my data only to be told the backup was corrupt when I tried to restore :(
-manually re-installing everything was not too painful, except for:
-downloading save games from the cloud is a giant pain in the ass. Why not let us download them all at once?

So ya, I'm sure the process is really nice when it works...

That's the one I got and it works wonders. Swap is easy and backup restore was painless. But I did delete all my disc based games first to minimize the backup size since all those reinstall from disc whenever I insert it.

Is this image ever to get updated ? Right now it's pretty useless.

Ugh, really? So did it fail or was the problem something else? I want a 2TB drive, and Seagate seems to be the only option there. But, their reputation for failure rate is terrible. I'm looking at this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178627&ignorebbr=1

Reviews are good on Newegg and Amazon, but is that just because the drive is fairly new? Decision, decisions ...

I can run my numbers for a lot of games, but what's the convention? Hit start to menu? Also, with SSHDs the game boots up faster if you have just used it, as opposed to an older game, so how do you treat those?

I have it and it is excellent. The Witcher 3 loads VERY fast in all situations on that drive.

I thought it was just easier to have my PS4 download everything again when I upgraded to a 7200rpm HGST 1TB drive. It just downloaded everything over night.

If I want to ensure I am able to keep my copy of P.T. what steps should I take when replacing my HDD? Everything else is replaceable.

Bummer. Guess my only option is to delete all the disc based data so the backup won't take as long then.

That's what I did. It's super easy because you can sort by size and just delete the large disc related games quickly. I went from 400GB to under 100 to backup in a cinch.

i did the upgrade to the seagate 1TB sshd and the transition was effortless. backing up 5gigs of save files and game recordings that i couldn't delete(?!) took an hour, but restoring the backup after the fresh firmware install was no big deal.

i too am simply re-downloading the games i want to play while i'm at work (via the online store "download to my PS4" feature)

already enjoying the extra space, we'll see if i notice a difference in loading times.

Hi All!
Since this is the hard drive forum..and I want to upgrade my PS4 hard drive, need some advice..was thinking about getting this drive
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I8O6OQ4/?tag=neogaf0e-20

the 2TB seagate/samsung drive, gonna wait til amazon has more in stock, if I get this drive I wont have to worry anymore about running out of space, but then I heard about some people having issues with the hard drive making beeping sounds, or making loud noises, or freezing, then I Got worried and went back to considering the 1TB SSHD Seagate drive, but if I got that drive I would still have to worry about running out of space eventually, but I havent heard any issues about freezing or loud noises or beeping with that drive so just dont know what to do, any suggestions as to which drive is best to buy just want something reliable

Hi guys.

I bought Seagate Expension 2 TB External HDD (contains ST2000LM003) then I applied to my PS4. And I converted PS4's original disk to external disk. So, still I can use PS4's original disk as external drive.

I prepared a video about that.

It's Turkish but still you can understand to steps.

Thanks.

The 1TB is very reliable and noticeably speedy. I love mine. It's a darn good investment.

I just did the exact same thing a few days ago. Quite easy. The only thing that bothered me was that you can not reinstall your saves onto the new HD unless the game is also installed first.

So, I thought I'd be right with my ~240GB SSD in my PS4 (don't worry, I didn't buy it especially for it) but then I played GTA5 and have bugger-all space left. Does the PS4 support playing games off external devices? If so, what sort of speeds can be had from it, if anyone's tested?

Fake edit: looks like I can't (but I can backup individual apps/games to external devices). Guess that's a start.

I got this recently as well.

More storage and increased performance at a reasonable price.

Is the Seagate 1TB SSHD still the best 1TB drive on the market speed/heat wise for the PS4?

I want more space and speed, but I don't want to introduce any more heat than the stock drive.
