NY Times: The Sport That Makes the Flag (and the Confetti) Fly

The tens of thousands of fans who lined the parade route served as a sequel to the record television audience of 25.4 million that watched last Sunday as the team captured the Women’s World Cup in Canada with a 5-2 victory over Japan. Both events spoke to the growing popularity in the United States of both soccer and women’s sports, and to their potential to get even bigger.

And the outpouring of support this summer for the women’s national team and last summer for the men’s national team at the World Cup in Brazil also strengthened the notion that soccer has become the sport by which Americans most passionately express their patriotism.

Does hosting the World Cup leave a legacy?

The chart below normalises the Elo ratings of hosts between 1974 and 2006 such that progress is compared to the year of hosting. And although individual trends are hard to pick out, it’s clear that only a handful of countries can claim to have improved the team after hosting the tournament – whether by coincidence or through the power of a legacy.

The United States’ success is the notable outlier, and many commentators would agree that hosting the 1994 World Cup had a profound effect on the popularity of the sport. But for other developing countries – in footballing terms – the effect has been less notable, with Korea, Japan and Mexico failing to capitalise on the buzz of having the tournament at home.

The general trend is that the national team improves after winning the right to host the World Cup, but future generations are unable to sustain this after the tournament. Admittedly, improvements are harder to sustain for the top football nations.

Quakes - Houston game was awful. I had to turn it off at halftime. Just a woeful performance all around. Don't see how the Quakes can sneak into the playoffs given their current issues. Too many holes in the lineup and too much competition in the West.

Red Bulls win! 4-0-0 when I'm in attendance. I should go more often.

I took my first ever selfie with Luis Robles after the game and my Dad got him to sign two of the posters they gave out. He gave his jersey to some guy that, I believe, had something wrong with him health wise. He was asking the guy how he was and actually concerned. Good guy, that Robles.

But seriously, the level of parity throughout the league is just ridiculous right now: Every team is between 1.06 PPG and 1.69 PPG, with a goal differential between -7 and +8.

I missed the game, but Keane's goal is so good. He is returning to his MVP form of last year. Gordon's game winning goal was also great. I wonder how many more late goals he is going to score this season.

That was the highlight of my night at PPL last night.
Both sets of supporters groups were great the tifos were great and we were able to Doop three times and the fireworks were on point.

Not a Timbers fan but at least they had the sense to bring in a defensive DP with Ridgewell. NYCFC will still be a train wreck after Lamps and Pirlo are in uniform.
