iOS Gaming July 2015 | Apple bans the revolution

But then again, maybe it's for our safety.
I play a ton of async games and I can safely say that if my wife hears once again 'Carcassonne!' 'Blink!' 'It's your turn!' or the custom trumpet, she will kill me.

Hah, the first thing I do is turn off audio notifications since they drive me crazy too. Visual notifications is all I need.

This War of Mine is making its way across the pond. Live in the UK so expect that it'll be live in the US at 11 EST.

Think it'll be $9.99 (33% off launch sale).

Too many to list but there appears to be a huge sale on the App Store. In addition to many Gameloft, EA and Rovio titles, there's things like Framed, Shadowmatic, Badland, Beans Dreams, the Anomaly games...and more on sale for $.99.

Believe it or not, it seems like it's been quite a while since we had the once routine EA and Gameloft titles.

Just thought I'd give the heads up. Check AppZapp or AppShopper for a full list.

Might be timed in conjunction with the big Amazon Prime sale since a lot of other online retailers are jumping in with sales. Think the App Store celebrated a birthday a few days ago too.

Goat Sim is .99 cents. Can't pass up something that stupid for a buck.

FYI seems broken if you happen to be running the iOS beta.

I am really enjoying the Rayman Adventures game, my only wish is they make it premium, as this blocking you playing unless you spend gems to hatch the eggs early is annoying me :(

play 20 mins, wait 3 hours

There's new stuff
https://pixelatedparadise.wordpress...-this-war-of-mine-and-more-to-come/#more-2823

Although maybe some of those released yesterday?

None of those are (apart from Soft-Launches) only out in NZ for now. Seems like the appstore is getting weirder. It was getting worse and worse but this week I can't even find one NZ release...

Edit: Warhammer Deathwatch is out in NZ:

Well we know Deathwatch is coming this week. But the Wednesday = main release day has been diminished for a while now. Maybe we're still used to that format? I mean, TWoM came out on Tuesday, Don't Starve on Thursday, etc.

It's also due to the fact that the Appstore is not functionning as it was lately when it comes to scheduled releases. I don't really know why but today proves it once again.

AT LAST, Deathwatch is out!!!
(in NZ)

Incidentally I just hit the last stages of the game (in the beta build).

I love the game and found it freaking awesome, every chapter better than the previous one with last one being absolutely amazing imho and possibly one of the best scifi/Alien thing I ever played.
Spent the night in terror with my iPad between hands.

Guys...I'll be away next week but I'll have iPhone with me (can't wait to install there, I had the beta just on my iPad).
If you fancy some multiplayer games (2,3 or 4 people) invite me without fear!!!
They are really fun and a nice addition to the amazing very long tight campaign.

This is my most recent ingame selfie :)

Grabbed the Sorcery trilogy on sale, been waiting a long time for that. Is there a fourth game in the series yet to be released?

Nice! How is the story? Interesting enough or more of an afterthought like Hunters 2?

It's really nice, WH40K style.
If you are not familiar with the setting, think deep space Aliens (like the movie), just more badass (see the screenshot).
It's nothing like the vague afterthought Hunters 2 was.

Actually the game is all 'story'...there aren't random missions.
It's 40 mission campaign, very tight with spoken dialogues (chatter between marines, it's really cool...Baldur's Gate banter style) in every mission (but the prologue maybe, can't remember).
It's divided in chapters, consisting in 4 missions tied together (same 'place', all maps tied, auto conclusive mini story/mission).
Being WH40K don't expect a JRPG with insights on motivations of Maries or things like that :)
Their only purpose is wiping off the universe the Xenos, so the missions (which are very varied) reflect that (destroy this ship, nuke that planet, steal their plans, etc...).
Last chapter is awesome, but every chapter is better than the previous one, and they start strong already (I'm sure there will be video around the net very soon, just saw one on TA....too bad the author didn't even realize you can pitch the camera!!! I always play in iso, it's so cool).

Oh btw Heringer, I forgot!
I believe that with DeathWatch Rodeo outdone themselves, as I thought they did with Warhammer Quest over Hunters 2.
Deathwatch is different from both, a beast on it's own.
No random (well, unlocks are random, but that's part of the fun...the game is a collector's paradise), tight campaign, you have many Marines with different skills and gears.
If you didn't like their previous offering, I dunno tough.

I liked a lot Hunters 2 (fun and easy to get into) and loved WHQ (my fav boardgame in my pocket), and I think DeathWatch is better than both.

I could talk A LOT about the amazing graphics, the great sounds, the immersion, the variety etc...but what I like most is the foundation of the game, the death mechanic.

They managed to maintain the tension of Warhammer Quest played on hard (only way to appreciate the mechanics imho) without being so punishing (you can easily lose 10 hours of gameplay in WHQ).
If your marine dies, he is not forever lost.
He just lose all the unspent XPs.

It works incredibly well in the game and it's really consistent with the setting.

A typical situation is this:
You are exploring this alien starship, trying to stop the Xenos attacking a just armed bomb.
All of a sudden they come from every hole, surrounding you.
Then...a Carnifex appear (think Alien, just bigger).

Now...you have your little squad and all Marines have around 2K experience points.
All can get a new skill at 3K (I'm just throwing numbers).
So....if someone dies...he will lose those 2K points.
It's particularly gutting when you are just 500XP from that HEAL skill you need so much, and your marine dies.
So...you will cuddle and protect them, but you also need to complete the mission.
A lot of thinking and many hard choices to make.
But if you lose the missione...ok.
It stings but it's not that hard to recover.

This is especially true in later chapters where, depending on your specializations, gears and unlocked marines, many skills interconnects, so even the timing is important.

All of this wasn't present in Hunters, and just partially in Warhammer Quest (and only at hard, in black dungeons).

I hope to have given you a better idea on what to expect!!!
But just ask in case!

.....

Rodeo should have obviously made this much more evident.

Tap with two fingers vertically up and down.

It's really cool, I do it always to see the fog moving, or a Carnifex getting up above my marine that is about to kill him with a plasma bolt :)

Loved Hunters 1 & 2, really disliked WHQ.

Deathwatch better not disappoint or I'll issue a bounty on Pitta.

:)
You'll be pleased. Loved the Hunter games, preferred them over Quest because of the sci-fi theme. Deathwatch is a notable evolution of the Hunters formula, with the added awesomeness that is Warhammer 40K. Looks gorgeous and plays great

what kind of a game is deathwatch?
Turn based tactical strategy. Think X-Com

Space Marines don't take cover. They're walking tanks

This War of Mine is one of those games like FTL and Papers Please that feels like it was destined for mobile. Controls flawlessly. I can't recommend it enough

Glancing at the TA thread, the mobile version is equivalent to 1.2 on PC. So that means the additional shelter and choosing your starting characters are in the iPad version, but the scenario/character editors, new locations, and new music that were added in 1.3 aren't yet.

But they're coming. "Updates will come, and a lot of new stuff is already planned and/or in production!"

I think you will like it, even if I'm not sure how you could love Hunters and hate Warhammer Quest (besides the setting).

Anyway, I'll set up a multiplayer tomorrow.

Be there or collect your bounty :)

Wow, sounds really promising! I would buy it tonight if I wasn't playing two SRPG's already (Tactics Ogre and Valkyria Chronicles 3). Definitely on my list though. And who knows, maybe the impulse buyer in me will show up tonight. :)

I love Alien, so the setting is a positive to me. Though I know nothing about the WH40K universe. Don't they fight orcs or something? Actually, isn't there a f2p Warhammer SRPG already on the Appstore?

That's the fantasy Warhammer

Warhammer 40K is far future, set in an incredibly bleak and awesomely over-the-top sci fi universe mixed with cosmic horror

The games weren't bad and I enjoyed them. Just thought they were a bit lacking in some areas.

Death mechanic sounds cool, but honestly I'll probably just play this like I play Fire Emblem (if a char dies, restart the chapter). :p

Well, you can't.
You can't save, you can't reload.
The game just save the state if interrupted.
If some chars die, or you fail the mission (everyone dies) you are back the same as before, without the unspent XPs.

So if you had a marine with 7500 XP (you get the cool skills at 8000) and he dies....you will have the same marine with 0 XP (but retaining every skills previously unlocked and all gears).

This have another side effect....you will spend quite a lot of time outfitting your marines between mission, trying to decide if spending now the XP for a minor skill or waiting for the big one, but risking....

Works very very in the setting (there is a reason I can't remember why Marines do not actually die, some gene things...can't remember), keep you on your toes....
Having a turn based game that gives you this kind of tension (it's not a FPS like Isolation) so when you see a Carnifex around the corner and you just spent all your APs and shit in your pants....it's quite unique :)
To me at least.

I must say that I prefer by a vast margin the Alien setting over the WH40K one, but fortunately they went for the darker, serious and less over the top nuance...so I was very pleased.
Some missions are straight out of Alien :)

I'm not one to say that everyone is not entitled to their own opinions. But Carter Dotson's reviews on TA lately have been atrocious. His view of Tales from Deep Space spent half of the review just ranting against the developer.

And his review of Heroki is mind boggling. How many platformers going all the way back to Mario and Sonic aren't repetitive? What about more recent offerings like Leo's Fortune, which I completely agreed to its stellar reviews, but the gameplay was ... repetitive. Fun as hell but repetitive. Almost every shooter in existence is repetitive, but that doesn't make some of them any less deserving of praise for what it is good at.

Being repetitious does not mean a game cannot be good. Yes, if the gameplay itself sucks, then repetition is certainly not going to help. But in a game like Heroki, where the level design, Metroidvania style levels and superb level of polish and charm is front and center, the joy of the game is the way it plays. And there are new mechanics and surprises along the way. Half of the journey of many good platformers is exploration and you can't get top scores in this game by just rushing through the level.

I don't know. I just almost feel like the game had its cards stacked against it. The long development time to me produced an outstanding game. But it seems like both with Carter and Pocket Gamer's Harry Slater, they just must have had some sky high expectations.

To me, if a company like Nintendo brought us games like this, I'd be overjoyed at the prospects.

Every game is, by nature, repetitive. The experience is built on a gameplay foundation that tends to stay consistent throughout. It comes down to how a developer expands on that foundation with additional mechanics and designs the controls to feel enjoyable and dresses it up with an art style, narrative context, music, etc.

Dual stick shooters are a good example. The gameplay usually follow the same pattern across the genre. Left to move, right to aim, shoot things, don't get hit. And yet despite the repetitive nature of the genre, a game like Inferno feels different from Crimsonland, and those are good compared to some cheap clone

Agreed.

And on topic of Deathwatch, I really, really hope it doesn't suffer from the "this item is no longer available" BS the App Store seems to have had almost every release night recently.

I wanted the game yesterday and sure as hell don't want to wait until tomorrow :).

Oh ok, I get it now. I thought you lost the character for good, but it's just the unspent XP. Seems like a nice risk/reward mechanic that is not as brutal as Fire Emblem but still very damaging to let one character die. Interesting concept.

Isn't Warhammer big enough to merit an OT? Anyone willing to do it?

A Disney Characters RPG, 'The Duckforce Rises', Has Just Soft Launched

How do you feel about having a team consisting of Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge, and other Disney characters fighting against the likes of Magica De Spell in an card-based RPG? Excited? Well, if you are, I have just the game for you. The Duckforce Rises, a game that came out of nowhere, is currently in soft launch in Australia and New Zealand. Judging from the game's description and its screenshots, The Duckforce Rises is a card battler in which you pick your team and fight against a variety of enemies from the Disney universe. You use cards to deal damage, heal your characters, and so on.

screen640x640.jpeg

While the game will likely not win any awards for gameplay originality, its Disney theme definitely sets it apart from many similar games. The game is F2P, unsurprisingly, and comes with the appropriate energy meters and IAPs. Of course, as it's in soft launch, the monetization model might change (although I highly doubt it). You can unlock new heroes as you go, upgrade them with new cards, and so on. The game is universal and available to play if you live in Australia or New Zealand.
