DF: Witcher 3 patch 1.07 negatively impacts framerate, up to 8fps lower on XB1

XB1 performance:
Essentially, gameplay on Xbox One now appears to rely on a similar double-buffer v-sync set-up to the PS4 game, locking its frame-rate to 20fps during these lulls in performance. This means that the reading on our graph is consistently lower on patch 1.07 as compared to 1.05, where it was free to waver between 20-30fps freely. On a matching route through the bog, frame-rate can be up to 8fps slower on the latest version of the game.

PS4 performance:
With the new patch installed, the PS4 version doesn't get off lightly either. A route through the bog shows frame-rates lower than our original 1.05 test, where its lock at 20fps holds more consistently as we pass through the boggy thicket. On top of that, even traveling through simple countryside roads (or Novigrad's central city) continues to produce single-frame stutters every few seconds - a rough point we had hoped would be ironed out by now. Overall, little has improved in PS4's bid for a smooth 30fps reading here, and in fact, the tail-end of our Novigrad test shows dips to 25fps as we hit the marketplace - something not seen on the last patch.

Conclusion:
So back to the question: should you install patch 1.07? Even with its negative impacts on frame-rate on PS4 and Xbox One, it's hard to overlook the wealth of positive changes to The Witcher 3. Weapon stats are rebalanced, the inventory systems are streamlined, and bug fixes too numerous to mention bolster the core package. With the new movement system, everything is snappier, with crowded pub areas now much easier to navigate. The switch to 1.07 is recommended overall, but with some reluctance: we were promised improved performance and it's surprising to see that this controversial area of The Witcher 3 actually seems to take a hit with the new update.

How? HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

That's right, motherfuckers! Devs can now transform your game in a product that's performing worse than when you bought it! Embrace the all-digital always-online future! EMBRACE IT!!

I have fully enjoyed The Witcher 3 on the XB1. Not saying that what DF said is not true, but this patch will not change much for player enjoyment. YMMV though.

I find this very strange. Played it on PS4 last night and the game runs significantly smoother. It feels like a different game to me

Edit: I'm in skellige right now, and it looks like most of the frame rate problems are in novigrad Might make a difference

Well then.

Glad I finished the game when I did. I hope they revert the change or something before the expansion. I'm not playing it like that.

Running at the same framerate as an N64 game? In 2015?

That would hamper any sane players enjoyment.

But the frame rate is worse which makes the overall experience worse, regardless of what gameplay additions they've made. So as long as they keep making positive gameplay changes the frame rate doesn't matter? This conclusion makes no sense to me at all.

Maybe your TV has motion smoothing enabled?

Maybe I should have waited for the "enhanced" edition with expansions before deciding to play this instead of waiting for a few patches.

Are you saying that 20fps was not common during the 360/PS3 era?

I associate that framerate with the previous console generation even more than the N64 one just due to the sheer quantity of games with shitty framerates.

The PS4 version locked up at 20 fps in the swamp area? WTF. I'm glad have a capable PC.
Locked at 20 fps throughout an entire area is what I call unplayable. The input lag must be horrible.

And people told us the PS4 framerate was just fine and perfectly playable. Unbelievable...
Some people have frighteningly low expectations when it comes to framerate. Frighteningly low expectations.

What the f***?

Xbox one version performed ok before... Constant 20 now instead if small dips??!

I am halfway through the game but this makes me want to give up completely

I feel sorry for the guy who bought my PS4 copy. This is unacceptable. A major AAA release a month after release still being this broken. I feel bad for the millions who are playing this on console.

Why did they go four a double buffered setup man, I'm sure they aren't so resource starved that they cannot deploy a triple buffered setup to fix it.

Double buffered V-sync was dated and inefficient practice even in the 2000s.

Isn't this the same frame rate that GTA V ran at on XB360/PS3 much of the time? Didn't seem to hurt sales/awards/impressions.

Most people, sane or not, don't care about framerate as much as neogaf.

Just lower down some graphics options, for chrisakes!

I saw videos of PS4 version, and it looks too dense and pretty for her poor APU.

I enjoyed Super Contra for SNES, despite the frame rate drops.

Some games can transcend uneven technical execution. This game is one of them.

However, if the game is a unplayable mess for you, then you have every right to be upset.

Worth mentioning that Crookbag Bog, where performance is at its worst, is a location you visit for only a fraction of the game with no reason to return after you're done with it.

It's bad but - like Blighttown - you shouldn't skip the entire game if you're worried about it. The vast majority of the time the performance is fine if you're used to open world console games.

I guess I'll end up posponing my 2nd playthrough until the first major DLC comes out. Most problems should be fixed by then.

I hope.

I haven't played for weeks on PC, I decided to clear other things first. Is the performance / bug situation fairly good there at least?

Who knows. Patch still isn't up for PC.

The current patch performs very well for me though. No stuttering, very few obvious bugs.

No, GTA5 was not this bad you remember it incorrect.
Plus there's the fact that GTA5 was not double buffered so it could never be this bad unless the developers were completely incompetent.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
You really get screwed when you buy games at day one before all bugs are ironed out. (Assuming that they fix this in 1.08. Otherwise, lol...)

Ok CDPR after seeing this I say take your time with the PC patch now, I'm in no rush for the game to get worse, if you need more time to get it right, take it.
