Can Rainbow Six: Seige save an entire genre? (on console)

Well.. We're now a few months away from Rainbow Six Seige. It's promising to be a a tactical, strategy based, 1 life round based shooter.. Something we have not seen on console probably since Socom: Confrontation. There have been indications that this game will even reach back to the series roots.. Who could forget Ravenshield?!?

With COD/BF/Destiny/Halo/Killzone, we have seen a major shift in the online shooter market on consoles. There has not been much of anything when it comes to round based non-respawn tactical shooters.

If Seige succeeds, do you think we might see a resurgence in the genre on console? Would Sony consider rebooting the Socom franchise? Or have other games like CS:Go shown that these types of games just don't cater to the console gamer anymore?

Me personally: I feel like if done properly, there's still a more hardcore shooter market on consoles. Hardcore gamers are generally more patient and don't need the instant and quick gratification that these respawn based shooters offer. Now, I'm not naive enough to believe that the tactical shooter market will ever be even close in size to the COD/BF market, but it really doesn't need to be. Right now on my PS4, there literally isn't a single shooter that fits the bill and caters to this audience. So Seige will come first and I'm hoping if it's successful, maybe we can see a resurgence of sorts?

I mean, it doesn't really look all that different from something like CoD except for it being one life though, and there are modes in CoD that give one life per round as well. This game looks far more run and gun and action focused than other Rainbow Six games have been.

I don't know if it will. It is being released next to the other heavy hitters but Ubisoft did say they want this game to sell like far cry 4 did and that was 7 million copies.

Definitely not, because it's an awful game. It's not even really a proper tactical shooter like the older Tom Clancy games. It's not a "hardcore" shooter by any means and kind of fills the role of the Rainbow Six Vegas games, although those are much better games than Siege.

Doubt it, a multiplayer only shooter is a hard sell at full price. Look at how Evolve and Titanfall were received, not enough content for the price being the main issue with both.

Well, most of Gaf thinks it looks exactly like Call of Duty and it's only tactical if it's a Rainbow Six game from their childhood. So no.
I'm looking forward to it though.

Shit guys, is it really looking that way? I had read so much about it going back to the series roots and what not. Damn If this is the case then that's disappointing.

I am so desperate for something to feed my Socom addiction on PS4 and I was really hopeful this would be it.

Unfortunately, the game will flop and Ubisoft will think that it's because of the gameplay and not the lack of single player and idiot release date.

I think CS: GO would do really well on consoles, if Valve gave it a fighting chance.

I think you should try other games in the genre like Ground Branch, H Hour, and Insurgency for example. I don't think Siege will be anything close to its roots or influential on console. It'd need to be a port of those other games imo to revive it on console.

While I was enthusiastic about Siege at the first reveal, I'm starting to doubt it a little. I think it might end up as the next Evolve, where the game is abandoned after a couple of months.
I hope not, obviously!

I agree, it will get swallowed up this Fall. But if it is done right it will have a shot at making some market share. All the other shooters coming out are sci-if Halo, Black Ops 3, SW Battlefront, Destiny DLC, Fall,Out 4,and Gears of War. The only non Sci-Fi is Rainbow 6 Weaoponry (Not sure how MGS will be online).

I come from Ghost Recon 2002, Rainbows, Socom days. Those were all great! I am excited for this game!

I bought CSGO day 1 on PS3. Still salty about it never even being patched.

H-Hour died a long time ago.

If you want a "tactical shooter", don't bill it is a competitive game. There's a very very small cross section between those two genres who appreciate both, so it's a niche audience. The competitive aspects puts off people who enjoy the original R6 and even Vegas. The "tactical" (aka shitty movement, super low TTK, gimped aim, and game breaking gadgets) aspect puts off people who enjoy competitive FPS.

The game is doomed from the onset.

So, what actually happened to CS:GO on consoles? Why didn't they patch it at all or release that promised Zombie Mod? I bought it on day 1 and it's pretty much hot garbage.

EDiT --... trying to remember, it's been awhile... is TLOU MP no-respawn?

I thought it was, but now I'm second guessing myself.

Alpha was pretty weak and I didn't get the feeling that Ubisoft was going to work towards a direction I'd like with the title. YMMV.

As far as saving a genre, I doubt it. I think it would be reviving a genre, if it succeeds---which I doubt it will.

Screw Valve for essentially releasing a game for the sake of releasing it. They're respected and all, but it's a travesty that we have forgiven and forgotten this mess because "lol play it on PC you fools". Developers of Payday get shat on for not properly supporting console versions but they will atleast listen to the console owners and try to do something. CS:GO was fucked from day one with its wonky controls and unfinished state, and they didn't improve nothing on it that they improved on PC.

Valve and their high PC gaming chair... I paid full price for CS:GO and double dipped on it. It's bullshit that they just cashed in on the name of the franchise. They even left it for dead (lol) on PC up until they starting reevaluated the game from scratch and made it a TF2-lite in terms if loot.

CS:GO gets patched 2-3 times a week on PC. Don't think that's really possible with how updates on console work(certification takes too long).

CSGO on console is the Day 1 version that released on PC and has never been updated at all. PS3 version had Move support and KB+M IIRC. I can't say how the PS3 community is but there's still players on the 360 version.

Reviving a genre on console. It's well and alive on PC with excellent games.

Going back to it's roots? Nope. Just PR speak from Ubisoft. Siege is turning out to be a mess especially for fans of the past Rainbow Six games. Hell one of the central features of the series has been removed entirely (no friendly AI) on top of there being no doors (seriously) and Ubisoft's insistence on turning the franchise into a largely multiplayer shooter affair which it has never been in the first place. This Ubisoft's way of trying to join into the military Battlefield/CoD fray and I'm disappointed they've using Rainbow Six for that end. It's guaranteed to flop against those and the other big shooters coming out this year.

Maybe we'll one day get something that actually resembles a tactical Rainbow Six game cause Siege sure as shit isn't looking like it.

Haven't played the beta, but that thread did not make it sound much fun, let alone good.

Maybe if Red Storm (the usual developers) or someone competent was making it, but they're busy with The Division. Siege is made by that bastion of brilliance Ubisoft Montreal, who combined have made like 3 good (solid? decent?) games and a dozen average to bad ones in the last 5 years.

Most Ubisoft complaints are actually about the Montreal developers, who really just need a break from making the same games over and over again. On the other hand those guys have a seriously cool studio, tons of great food, music, nightlife, it's hard to feel bad for them, lol. (Fuck, now I wanna move back to Montreal, lol.)

They could have easily just patched it monthly, instead of sending it to die immediately, no?. They didn't even give it a chance.

I'm on Xbox 360, but I stopped playing because it's pretty bad and never got patched. They even added some of the worst achievements in there, just to make people keep playing.

Same, I almost got all the achievements except for those long grindy ones. I still can't believe I played that first before upgrading to the PC version.

I'm willing to bet that they add a Team Deathmatch mode, and I'm also willing to bet that it's the only mode that will have players.

ITT: Everyone has already played it for days and knows it's shit.

I'm still optimistic and looking forward to it.

Talking about CSGO, they should have waited until this gen and actually put some effort in the port. I'd play the shit out of a well made CS on PS4.

Sorta. It's a far cry from the days when Ubi had two active franchises going. Arma is big but I consider milsim to be a related yet distnct genre.

Really nothing does what the first few R6 games did. You can scratch that Ghost Recon terrorist hunt itch a bit with Arma and Insurgency, I guess.

I don't even acknowledge Takedown. Some other small team needs to take a crack at it.

I forgot about Takedown, completely blocked it out of my head. I want to be careful about self-promo but Interstellar Marines is futuristic R6.

Edit: Fixed that, just noticed I repeated myself.

Has that been getting updates? It had like one gun last time I played it.

That one gun actually had recoil and the movement felt nice, though. I'd give it another shot if there's more content in.

There's 3 weapons but a placeholder model for the pistol as we had no time currently. There's more content in the game but coop is something that needs more focus.

As many people have said, Rainbow Siege is not tactical nor a Rainbow Six game.

I recommend checking out Intruder and Due Process for two games that might scratch the tactical itch.

I was so hyped for a new rainbow six when I first saw the trailer at that famous Ubisoft conference, but since then, it just does not seem that exciting or engaging. I don't think it will save the genre though, perhaps they need to bring a new mercs mode in a next gen Splinter Cell.

Cool. I had a lot of fun playing capture points at night in that game, I just felt like there wasn't enough to it to keep going at that point. I'll give it a look again.

Getting off topic, though.

Yeah, enough plugging for me :p.

For Siege, I really like the characters and their special abilities but it seems like it wants to compete with games like CS and CoD.
