Well.. We're now a few months away from Rainbow Six Seige. It's promising to be a a tactical, strategy based, 1 life round based shooter.. Something we have not seen on console probably since Socom: Confrontation. There have been indications that this game will even reach back to the series roots.. Who could forget Ravenshield?!?
With COD/BF/Destiny/Halo/Killzone, we have seen a major shift in the online shooter market on consoles. There has not been much of anything when it comes to round based non-respawn tactical shooters.
If Seige succeeds, do you think we might see a resurgence in the genre on console? Would Sony consider rebooting the Socom franchise? Or have other games like CS:Go shown that these types of games just don't cater to the console gamer anymore?
Me personally: I feel like if done properly, there's still a more hardcore shooter market on consoles. Hardcore gamers are generally more patient and don't need the instant and quick gratification that these respawn based shooters offer. Now, I'm not naive enough to believe that the tactical shooter market will ever be even close in size to the COD/BF market, but it really doesn't need to be. Right now on my PS4, there literally isn't a single shooter that fits the bill and caters to this audience. So Seige will come first and I'm hoping if it's successful, maybe we can see a resurgence of sorts?
