This just hit me. My mom is the worst possible media consumption console

I prefer my PS3 over the Wii U. PS3 does everything the Wii U does, but it also has Sky Go, Blu Ray support etc. Also the Netflix app sucks on Wii U, no continuous play is so annoying.

If the WiiU had a halfway decent Netflix app and wifi, it would be great. The lack of profile support, however, means my profile is cluttered with kids' shit.

And the wifi is garbage as the WiiU is the only devices my kids use for Netflix that regularly disconnects and pauses videos. It's incredibly disruptive.

Tablet and Chromecast combination works far better in practice.

If you know where to look there are plenty of people streaming every sports event. Great quality no skipping.

OK so if we're talking piracy than the Wii U is awesome because you can pirate all these things on it.

I don't know that that is what we're talking about though.

Lol'ing at some of the 'lol WiiU' comments. It's the touchscreen PLUS TV combo that makes it work so well. It really is great to use, although I haven't tried the XBO with kinect for comparison there.

Also, there's no console OS nastier than the PS4's.
I'd prefer my phone/tablet and AirPlay to the TV.

Well I'm on the PC now used the PS4 a few days ago and haven't touched the Xbone in a while.

Switched from my PS4 to the wiiU as my streaming console because it was just so much better at it.

Fair enough. I don't mean to be argumentative it's just in my experience the Wii U hasn't been as snappy in comparison to my Xbox.

You said "this just hit me". Did something literally hit you in the head?

Ohh....Oh no....

Yea, It definitely takes a few seconds longer but we're literally talking seconds. I just personally feel the controller screen + universal remote 1 2 combo makes it work so well for me

Not even close.
No DVD/BluRay.
Lack of decent size and speed HDD.
Really slow OS.
Browser that displays less pleasing than an iPhone.

Tablets are a better and cheaper option than the WiiU for what capabilities it does have.

Can't play DVDs or Blu-Rays, the "remote" dies in 3-5 hours, the OS is bloated and slow, Netflix is horribly outdated and doesn't even have access to profiles... and its at least 200$. In what world is this the "perfect" media consumption console?

I guess it is subjective. Probably he just streams and does not watch DVDs or Blu-rays.
The web browser is the best feature for me, really fast.
It is still not the fastest OS, but I guess the initial perception stayed strong among people, as they did actually improved a lot on the most used apps.

Lol at people comparing tablets, yes, some tablets and media devices are better, but this is a gaming console that plays Nintendo games, some 3rd party games and indies, that also happens to be a good media device depending on your tastes, if you are hard on streaming from the net or your PC, then Wii U is a very good option, plus the Web Browser is the best of the consoles.

Aren't the OS and browser utterly terrible? Just about anything else also supports the big three, and what you list is all fulfilled better and more by any iOS or Android device.

some people still use dvds and blurays?

LOL

Yeah, I think DVDs and especially Blurays are kind of irrelevant for a lot of people, but that still is a fair argument against the Wii U being a "perfect media consumption console" (although supposedly that's not what OP meant to say)

For TV watching? Not reallly. Well if you pair it with a Chromecast maybe but I was talking about game consoles.

One of the Galaxy S series with the remote functionality would probably be better if you threw in a Chromecast.

I find it to be pretty mediocre as I do across the board for everything it does. The PS4 with the latest update plays damn near everything I throw at it, images, videos, and has built in apps for most of the services I use. The Wii U has Netflix, can't take images/videos off of a memory stick.

Good God OP, just get a chromecast for $35. Control everything on your phone. Plus you don't support the awful Nintendo practices that created the horribly disappointing WiiU. Yep, I'm still bitter about my Wii U purchase.

I just wish it wasn't so slow. Navigating anything is a pain.

Also, with the crappy display on the second screen I don't even believe if it's worth it as a feature.

As Sartre noted in his contemplation on Hell in No Exit, the true horror is other members.
The other day I was watching Giant Bomb on YouTube through my WiiU gamepad, using it as a second screen while I played games on my PS4.

I got a good but weird feeling as I was using everything in a way it wasn't really intended.

That game pad needed a better speaker, tho.

It has the worst Netflix app and it's no DLNA receiver. I love DLNA, it's practically the most used media service outside of Netflix. I can stream almost anything from my phone or my computer using DLNA.

The controller is an amazing thing, though. It makes me wish Sony was serious about making Android and iOS phones a real second screen.

You said "this just hit me". Did something literally hit you in the head?

thekonamicode, are you an AI script programmed by nefarious evil do'ers that cannot understand connotations, descriptive language, symbolism, and other conventions of language and communication that transcend dictionary definitions and literal interpretations?

If you are, then we are closer to global AI domination than I thought.

It had potential, but the interfaces are so clunky and everything moves so slow. Watching stuff off screen on the gamepad in that terrible native res is less than ideal too.

That's my biggest issue. I've used it in the past, but the screen is really pretty bad. My phones have had far better screens for many years. Vita too.

Amazon and Netflix are fine for me for the most part, but having no profiles sucks ass since my sister uses the app alot which ends up cluttering her suggestions with mine.

Though Youtube is amazing on Wii U mainly for the tablet keyboard.

The browser is also amazing too, far better than the one on my PS3 or vita

I can't stand it that you can only use the gamepad for netflix.

I hate the screen being on the gamepad, or having to turn it off, it's just a nuisance to me.

This part isn't true actually.

Not everything appears on streaming services you know.

Also, unless they royally screwed something up, even ones that are on streaming services will look better on Bluray. And if you like any special features at all, streaming is a joke.

I have a Wii u, but I use my ps4 for streaming and use my tablet for "off-tv" things like web browser and you tube, netflix and amazon.

If you don't have good tablet, then the Wii u has something to offer. But I think even cheap Tablets can provide a better experience than the Wii u Tab
With chromecast you probably can most of the stuff with your tablet
